In a column entitled "Which Party Loves the U.S.A.?," the Washington Post's E.J. Dionne, Jr. presents an interesting formulation. Democrats love their country more than Republicans, because Democrats love it the way it is right now (with burgeoning non-white immigration, altering the demography), while Republicans (above all, Mr. Trump and Senator Cruz) "yearn for the United States of Then."
It appears that Mr. Dionne has in mind more than a mere change in color among our people when he observes, "Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Martin O'Malley all stand for the rights of a younger America today's country that is less white, more Latino and Asian (and yes, more Muslim) than was the U.S. of the past. " For, he continues, "[t]he cultural changes that have reshaped us are welcomed as part of our historical trajectory toward justice and inclusion."
And so it appears that there was something good about the America of Then: it had an admirable historical trajectory. The problem, we venture to suppose, was that Americans of old did not realize that this trajectory of justice and inclusion pointed in the direction of making the white race the minority. Some of them may have thought that in the case of slavery, justice consisted in the end of the slave trade, followed by emancipation, followed by civil and voting rights. Others may have thought it good to have people come here from around the world, but perhaps not that justice dictated turning the country into Africa, Latin America, or Asia. Why is that the target of the historical trajectory for Dionne? Do justice and inclusion dictate against there being any white-majority countries? Is that a punishment justly meted out to the guilty white race because of its transgressions at the beginning of the historical trajectory?

Yeah, they hate Republicans more than terrorists.
Dionne is an idiot whether he’s writing, or anyone’s writing about him writing.
E J Deonne says nothing that is interesting. Everything he says is crap!
If ‘rats love the USA so much, why do they work so hard at taking it away from the principles upon which it was founded? The principles that have made it the greatest Country on Earth?
“yearn for the United States of Then.”
“Then” was when America defeated unspeakable evil, provided unprecedented prosperity that benefited everyone, and proved that freedom and justice could truly prevail over tyranny. Ya, it really sucked.
Government is not the country.
Yeah the United States of Before It Lost Its Marbles.
At least, though, we have something we can discuss. Conservatism needs to explain WHY it is better; it can’t just stand on circular argument any better than liberalism can. It actually embraces ideas of progress of its own, though these are seldom talked about, and that neglect should change. The faith element, belief in and worship to a God who is wise enough to handle all challenges, is crucial, and we don’t have many would be politicos who are in or near that space. Big problems also need big faith, not just the little faith that is sometimes characteristic of yesteryear.
Democrats believe the government IS the country.
I think this is the trap that has been set.
No I do not love this country as it is now, I admit it. Seventy million people voted for that dolt, TWICE! How can I be proud of a country that does that?

If democrats are the party of the future why are their candidates so old?
*points to key word “left-wing lunatic”*
Democrats love adultery. They think they are cheating the corporation when the atmosphere of cheat only allows corporations to cheat more with the government. No, this is not America as we know it.
Nazional Sozialist Democrats. Now they can feel patriotic and soon pro-Hitler. Watch them make excuses for Hitler killing Jews
They love their taxpayer and capitalist subsidized BIG U.S. Government. They actually HATE America and Americans. That’s why they are currently working so hard to dilute the American population with freeloading and terrorist invaders.
Yes there is a smuggled assumption in there. That “by george,” the GUMMIT has to run things.
This comes from forgetting God and His role. In many conservative American views, He was the big cheese of the picture. Because God would bless those who believed, and even the unbelieving neighbors of those who believed, we would not need a giant, vain government.
I believe heartily that this beneficent picture could return — never perfectly since we are not in heaven yet, but still effectually. It would not be brought on by a political movement, but a spiritual one, otherwise known as a revival. God didn’t change anything about what He stood for, what He would reward, what prayers He would grant, what He wanted. That sad difference has been OURS, folks. There is NOBODY to blame but us; we accepted the devil’s bargain then refused to learn from the consequences even though the Lord was always gracious.
The entire thing could be rediscovered by a new realization that God is kind, but that both the devil and ourselves are cruel. It could. It is that simple. The gospel spells out implementation details, but it really does hark back to racket of the serpent of Eden: God is keeping something good from you. God is mean. No. The serpent is mean!
Yes this is about spiritual things. Some might call it religion but religion is people’s rituals. Faith is about accepting what God has already done and which is as available to anybody as the sand on the seashore.
May America accept the blessing of God again.
The fundamentals of conservatism are self-evident: that man succeeds when he is permitted to pursue self interests rather than being compelled to toil for the collective good to which no individual belongs; and that government begets power that inevitably begets corruption and tyranny. It’s not mysterious nor complicated, but merely requires an honest contemplation of the nature of man founded upon his collective experience.
America’s in decline and there is nothing to celebrate about the trends this nation is experiencing.
Anyone can open the floodgates and and restock the pool.
Birthrates are down. Marriages are down. Homeownership is declining. 90 million adults are not in the job force.
“sustainability” of energy has been called into question (because of policies that prohibit us getting gasoline and coal or building new nuclear power plants).
FUED
I want America back to how it was in 1789.
