My late mother used to make fried smelts on many a Friday. It just happens to be a specialty of my favorite Seattle sushi bar when I go down there on occasion.

We had a few inches of snow a couple of nights ago, no big deal.

No, not snowed in at all.
It’s actually warming up and is supposed to be in the 40’s tomorrow!

Ready to go at midnight precisely.

According to Martin Armstrong, 2016 looks to be similar to 1968. I remember that year all too well.

It's going to be warmer in Maine than here! Will wonders never cease!

My Sicilian Cod Stew is the perfect cold weather dish, and nature appears to be obliging me.

“Sicilian Cod Stew.”
I’ve never had it, but it sure sounds good!

Tabasco sounds good as an accompaniment. At home in New Jersey, we had them straight. The sushi bar offers a dipping sauce based on brown sugar. It’s not bad.

cod
1/4 medium onion
1/2 stalk celery
2 tbsp oil
large can tomatoes
2 medium potatoes
Sicilian green olives
capers
pepper
pinch sugar

Slice the celery and onion, and place in a heavy skillet with oil. Saute for 10 minutes.

Peel, quarter and par-boil the potatoes.

A note from Mom: Run the tomatoes through blender for a few seconds to break them up. No more than that.

Add the potatoes and tomatoes, and sprinkle with the spices. Cover and cook for 15 minutes. Add the cod, olives and capers, and cover the fish with the mixture. Cook until the potatoes are soft. The potatoes are the "clock."

Naaaaah. They’re just being their usual obnoxious selves. It’s what kittehs do best. LOL

I’m tempted to toss a few outside, I’ll tell ya, but there’s been a pack of coyotes hanging around too close to the farm lately. So in they all stay, and they’re doing a fine job of driving us crazy!

Hooboy, '68. I'd turn back the clock if I could escape the shame.

A self-ordained professor's tongue
Too serious to fool
Spouted out that liberty
Is just equality in school
"Equality," I spoke the word
As if a wedding vow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I'm younger than that now.

Counting down. How the heck did I ever live this long?

The Byrds: "My Back Pages"

Political assassinations, insurrections, a riot both on the convention floor and out on the street, the splintering of a party, an election that almost went into the House. Yep, a fascinating year. Good times for all.

It's easy to make and fills you up on a cold winter's evening. Goes well with a pinot grigio.
