Rick Santorum Says Ted Cruz Isn’t A Real Social Conservative
buzzfeed.com ^ | December 29

Rick Santorum on Monday accused his opponent Ted Cruz of not being a social conservative.

The former senator from Pennsylvania told NewsmaxTV's Steve Malzberg Show that social conservative votes are going to Cruz and Republican front-runner Donald Trump, neither of which, he said, "are particularly strong social conservatives."

"Donald Trump has never been a social conservative up until the last few months, and Ted Cruz takes the position, very much a 10th Amendment, states rights, which is, you know, very much Rand Paul, Ron Paul position," Santorum said.

"They're being sold, Ted Cruz says, 'Oh, I'm this social conservative,'" Santorum continued, saying people haven't had a chance to actually look the candidates positions on social issues.

Citing an article in the Iowa Republican which declared Cruz "False Prophet Of Social Conservatism," the former senator said many would look at Cruz and say, "what a minute, he says he's these things, but he's not."

"It's basically that he's not the social conservative that he's portraying himself to be and is the answer is he's not," added Santorum, citing a Politico story where Cruz said on a secret tape at a fundraiser that he wouldn't make fighting same-sex marriage a top three priority in his administration.

I don’t think so. Many, many in DC not just the GOPe despise Cruz, as they consider him an opportunist.

The media, Obama, the Democrats, the GOPe, Trump and you all think the same thing.

Incidentally, I love Jesus Christ, HE is my savior in everything, but I would never foul that relationship with something as cheap as politics.

Cruz is a constitutionalist. Not sure how that "fouls" anything. Perhaps you can give an example.

Seriously? Cruz is and continues to court and win endorsements from the evangelicals, especially in Iowa. It is his right now base. I would love to give you an example but there are so many I would flood the thread. Just google Cruz/evangelical/Iowa. You are right, he is a constitutionalist and I love that but that isn’t working well for him and so he is adding another dimension which is evangelicals, the ONLY problem is, THEY DON’T VOTE.

No. I fully understand that Cruz is spending time targeting evangelicals. But he is also spending time targeting Tea Party people and Libertarians.

So I'm asking you what positions is Cruz taking when he targets evangelicals, that you don't like?

There are things I like about Santorum, but criticizing Cruz will get him nowhere this cycle.

Yes, Santorum had a great opportunity in 2012, but Newton Gingrich stood in the way like the schoolyard bully.

Having to troll Santorum releases to get your “dirt”, now? Poor wee thing.

The very idea that he is targeting the evangelical vote is my answer. When a politician targets a specific Christian group, how is that any different from other politicians who target the Jewish or Islamic vote? As I said, politics and religion are like oil and water, they don’t mix and I personally lose respect for those who use ANY religion as a voter block. I think it is obscene.

I supported you last time around Rick. However, you need to recognize that this is not your year. Please stop trying to split the social conservative vote so that a GOPE type can squeeze in.

“But got some inside info today, Rubio WILL BE the nominee......”

I got that same “inside info” six months ago, probably by a member of the same super duper special elitist establishment big headed people that play both sides of the aisle, We the People be damned. IF indeed Rubio wins, it will most certainly be because of total fraud.

The very idea that he is targeting the evangelical vote is my answer.

So just the fact that Cruz spends time talking with evangelical is what you don't like. Nevermind the fact that 60 percent of GOP caucus-goers in Iowa are evangelicals, should he avoid them?

As I said, politics and religion are like oil and water, they don't mix

On policy, Cruz is NOT mixing politics and religion, he is simply spending time with evangelicals promoting the same constitutional policies that he does with Tea Party people, with libertarians and other patriots.

Yet you have a problem with that.

I suppose you also have a problem with Trump meeting with Jewish groups and black groups too?

Decentralization is the only realistic path to state or local or cultural level social conservatism. Any centralization scheme for social conservatism will degrade to progressivism mush and top down amoralism.

Really, I don’t want an argument. I appreciate and respect your views and I will support to my fullest, whoever the Republican nominee might be. I personally do not like ANY politician who targets ANY specific religious group and uses his/hers beliefs to garner votes. I would rather hear, “I am a Christian or Jew or Muslim” but this is what I believe about governing and then let the people decide.

Yep. Which is why I believe the next president, Cruz or Trump hopefully, should first employ Obama’s ‘pen and phone’ to destroy all of the extraconstitutional offenses he (and Bush) has inflicted upon this nation, then destroy the damn EO device forever.

I supported Rick the last time around, but that was because he WAS about the only real social conservative. Santorum is angry that Cruz has taken the voters he had the last time around. A sore loser never looks good in public. Sorry, Rick, but Cruz is every bit as good a social conservative as you, and I’d even say better. You stood on the right issues most of the time, but you NEVER once shared your faith. You used your child as a prop in that arena.

When a nobody like Rick bashes another candidate, it works in reverse.

Must be good money running for POTUS every 4 years . How else does Santorum make a living?

They managed to bounce Newt out of the primaries right before we had had the chance to sink Romney.

Are you seriously positing that Newt Gingrich would have defeated Obama in a general election...?
