Rick Santorum Says Ted Cruz Isn’t A Real Social Conservative

Rick Santorum on Monday accused his opponent Ted Cruz of not being a social conservative.

The former senator from Pennsylvania told NewsmaxTV's Steve Malzberg Show that social conservative votes are going to Cruz and Republican front-runner Donald Trump, neither of which, he said, "are particularly strong social conservatives."

"Donald Trump has never been a social conservative up until the last few months, and Ted Cruz takes the position, very much a 10th Amendment, states rights, which is, you know, very much Rand Paul, Ron Paul position," Santorum said.

"They're being sold, Ted Cruz says, 'Oh, I'm this social conservative,'" Santorum continued, saying people haven't had a chance to actually look the candidates positions on social issues.

Citing an article in the Iowa Republican which declared Cruz "False Prophet Of Social Conservatism," the former senator said many would look at Cruz and say, "what a minute, he says he's these things, but he's not."

"It's basically that he's not the social conservative that he's portraying himself to be and is the answer is he's not," added Santorum, citing a Politico story where Cruz said on a secret tape at a fundraiser that he wouldn't make fighting same-sex marriage a top three priority in his administration.

The Establishment keeps the also-rans in the game as long as possible because they can insult Trump and Cruz in ways that the LSM and the rest of the Establishment cannot.

No doubt, I agree. But I still believe that will happen, even without Trump's money or blessing.

Rick Santorum is pathetic. He ought to run for Governor of PA.

When the U.S.Constitution was written, all the powers of the Federal Government were plainly described. Everything else was relegated to the powers of the several States.

Note: People have rights. States have powers endowed by the approval of the people.

Medicine is regulated by the States. Abortion could be effectively reduced to nearly ZERO this coming year if social conservatives would apply their skills to making it so. I’m not holding my breath.

Same goes for marriage. The Supreme Court has no power to threaten the States on this issue, but the social conservatives will not act on the State level to make that so. Social conservatives want the Feds to do something which they can not do under the U.S.Constitution.

It takes courage and cunning and determination to be socially conservative, but we are not seeing the path to those solutions.

Rick Santorum can lead the way but he will not do so. That is what I meant by pathetic.

LOL!

I remember back in 2012 when the same people backing Cruz was backing Santorum with the same rhetoric and sentimentality.

They managed to bounce Newt out of the primaries right before we had had the chance to sink Romney.

Thar, and Romney’s attack ads, pretty much ensured Obama’s reelection.

Slick Rick wouldn’t know a Conservative if he saw one. There are so few of them in the GOP party. Rick look in the mirror, do you happen to see one now?

I suspect there is a. It of Jealousy there, and they are listening to ego over the voice of The Lord, rather than running on what they’d bring to the campaign (their records).

This is the Norm for Trumpsters.

I don't think Norm has officially come around to supporting Trump, but you should ping him if you're going to mention him.

So Santorum’s criticism is that Ted Cruz...wants to actually obey the Constitution?

In a sense what Santorum is saying is true. We argue for limited government; proper understanding of federalism through the lens of the 10th Amendment etc., as the best method for advancing socially conservative principles. So when you step back and look at it for a moment, the Constitution is nothing but a tool. It is a means. So adherence to the Constitution and adherence to socially conservative principles should not be confused as being the same thing.

If one reviews Cruz's latest victories ad what is he saying? I used the tool of the federal judiciary to advance x, y and z. It takes more than saying let the states decide to be socially conservative.

I don’t think so. Many, many in DC not just the GOPe despise Cruz, as they consider him an opportunist. Frankly, there are quite a few incidents that my gut tells me the same thing. Personally, I do not trust politicians (Brother Love Santorum was one) who play to the evangelical vote. Cruz is doing just that, right now, and if it is turning a far right conservative like myself off, just imagine what it is doing to the moderate conservative. Religion and politics are like oil and water and only the desperate try to mix them. Incidentally, I love Jesus Christ, HE is my savior in everything, but I would never foul that relationship with something as cheap as politics.
