Some voters embarrassed to admit supporting Trump
Hearst Newspapers ^ | Friday, December 25, 2015 | Kathleen Parker

The biggest political news is that Donald Trump may be doing even better than polls have suggested. Yikes.

Apparently, many Trump supporters have been fibbing to pollsters, saying they’re for someone else when they really intend to vote for The Donald. And those fudging the most are college-educated voters because, it seems, they’re too embarrassed to admit their preference. As well they should be. I’m kidding. Sort of.

Imagine it this way: Guy on the phone asks whom you prefer for president. You can say, I really like the bragging, eye-rolling, profane, nativist, misogynist, policy-free billionaire-birther “jerk” (Jeb Bush’s word). Or, you can select a more-sensible candidate — and keep your Trump crush to yourself.

Thanks to this treasonous gap — OK, this interesting anomaly — these recent findings by the polling group Morning Consult could shake things up a bit. Notably, Trump’s predicted ceiling of 35 percent to 40 percent, the figure many prognosticators have used to argue against Trump’s becoming the Republican nominee, may be much higher — and his nomination, therefore, more likely.

Clinton voters should be the ones that are embarrassed to admit their support!

What evolution do you believe is necessary? Or are you one of those trump ideologues who refuse to acknowledge the obvious poison pill attempt that Cruz used and choose to blindly lash out at him for that just because you foolishly believe trump is gonna deport all those hated illegals (ain’t ever gonna happen, other than in the way Cruz advocates)

And of course people can evolve. The timing of his evolution to coincide with his run for president is decidedly suspicious. A year ago, FReepers would have laughed at the notion of his running as a republican

Not at all. Any businessman at Trump’s level has to be a crony capitalist by necessity, if by crony capitalist, you mean a businessman who donates to politicians. You don’t have to like it to participate in it but it would be business suicide not to. It’s not that hard to understand.

But, there’s a big difference between the businessman who contributes defensively, to protect himself, and one who seeks influence to avoid having to compete in the market.

At any rate, this is beside the point when it comes to how Trump would govern. He has repeatedly pointed out that his political donations were a cost of doing business. He didn’t like the system, but understood it couldn’t be avoided.

As an independent businessman, financing his own campaign, he would be immune from the pressures of the true crony capitalists, who wish to use government as a substitute for competing in the marketplace. Again, it’s not that hard to understand.

Sometimes, though, when people are too embarrassed to tell a pollster they’re voting for a candidate, it turns out that they are too embarrassed to vote for him on election day ...

Are you talking about Cruz? Yes, it does seem a little suspicious to a lot of us. He was in favor of legalizing 11 million illegals until Trump changed the narrative on this issue.

You mean like donating to politicians to get favorable outcomes on eminent domain cases? You mean like that kind of crony capitalist?

Sorry I value the constitution, and the value of principles, much more than that

Confirmed as a trump ideologue...thank you. Now known that rational conversations cannot be had with you. Duly noted.

You are 100% correct in your assessment.
Donald Trump of course donated to various political candidates and campaigns during his business career.
He is a real estate professional with valuable New York City holdings. He knows he needed to win friends and influence people.
My feeling is that Donald Trump likely has far greater support than the "official polls" indicate.

The ‘obvious’ poison pill is not obvious at all. Listen to Cruz’s own comments on the his amendment to the Gang of Eight bill. He clearly made the case that he was in favor of bringing illegals ‘in out of the shadows’ and giving them legal status. He was only against giving them citizenship and not ‘securing the border’ first.

Every comment of his, until recently, make the case that he wanted the Gang of Eight bill to pass, as long as his amendment was included. Was he lying? I thought Cruz’s ability to be a straight talker was his greatest strength?

My rational comment about Cruz proves me to be an ideologue? Or are you bowing out of an argument that you know the facts prevent you from winning? Please enlighten. I simply pointed out that Cruz has evolved on immigration. Do you deny that his position has changed? If you do, then do some research. The best place to start is Cruz’s senate testimony on his Gang of Eight Amendment (circa May 2013). It’s easy to find on Youtube.

And flamboyant or not, Trump is not the fool Obama or Jimmy Carter is.

No, he's not. But he's still blurts out things that he has to later qualify.

"They all have to go home" was later modified by "The good ones can come back".

The "no more Muslims" position had to be clarified by "it doesn't apply to American citizens or political or business leaders of Muslim nations".

I could go on. But you get the point. Trump may be an experienced negotiator, but he's not used to having his public word taken as seriously as his private word. Foreign governments, however, will parse every public statement...or aside...for meaning.

For all his linguistic flaws, George W. Bush understood this requirement of the presidency and never said something in public he didn't mean or couldn't back up. I don't doubt he's capable of it, but Trump will have to learn the same kind of self-control.

You may view the timing of his evolution as suspicious, but it actually makes total sense. He was finally throwing his hat into the political arena, so it was time to state what he stood for as a politician, not as an amateur commentator, which is what he had been up till then.

Look, you either believe Trump is misleading people or not. The problem is, people who believe he’s misleading people have a hard time giving a reasonable explanation of his motive.

People also have a hard time wrapping their brains around how a guy like Trump could be right on the issues now, and have been spouting something different a few years ago. I get it, but what they’re missing imo, is that Trump’s approach to politics is so radically different from your traditioinal politician’s approach that people don’t understand it.

Trump approaches political problems the way he approaches the hundreds of problems he has to solve as an Executive. He doesn’t spend months studying a single issue. He relies on good advisors and common sense. It makes total sense, that once he focused his executive skills on the Presidency, his policy positions would emerge.

As you are the last person apparently to get the memo...even schumer said he put forth a poison pill... And sessions said that Cruz was firmly in his camp. So are you ignorant, being purposefully obtuse or are you an ideologue, there aren’t other options?

The "no more Muslims" position had to be clarified by "it doesn't apply to American citizens or political or business leaders of Muslim nations".

Bull, he never said that. He was talking about immigration and refugees not visitor visas.
