The Justice Department said this week it is putting off payments "for the time being" to local law enforcement agencies that participate in the federal asset forfeiture program.
The move comes after Congress recently took $1.2 billion from the department's asset forfeiture fund as part of budget maneuvering.
Under the program, the Justice Department permits local law enforcement to share proceeds of seized assets from investigations in which they participated. But significant cuts to the fund by Congress mean those "equitable sharing" payments are being put on hold. ...

So, Congress made off with the goodies. How corrupt is that. It’s the stuff of King John.
“I see you have some money there. Give it to me.”
Congress did a little asset forfeituring of their own.
In English... it is over.

And smarter.
let’s see how quickly asset forfeiture drops if the locals don’t get their cut.

Well, the remote-controlled car crash was a “Person of Interest” episode-BEFORE Hastings died.
So, next time the locals either don’t get as ambitious about doing the seizures or just don’t report them and divvy up locally like the do in Mehico. Which scenario is more likely?

This is just the fed asset forfeiture. It doesn’t impact the state-level asset forfeiture programs.
Better than nothin’, I suppose.

It’s too disgusting for words.
They didn't see that one coming!
“So, next time the locals either donât get as ambitious about doing the seizures or just donât report them and divvy up locally like the do in Mehico. Which scenario is more likely?”
Exactly...Stop reporting seizures!
Anarchy never felt so good!
Does that make it more likely or less?
I just find the odds of posting you’re in trouble and having your car blow up that same night very small.
Persons of Interest. wow
Good. CAF is blatantly unconstitutional and a violation of the 5th Amendment.
You should not be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process. The police should not be able to rob someone by the side of the road, then KEEP the freaking money. Billions of dollars on cash and property is being funneled into local PD’s with this program. The fact that they can keep the money - with no accountability - encourages them to look for something to take.
I cannot believe that this hasn’t been stopped by the SCOTUS.
The good side effect of ending the federal sharing program was that it was used in many jurisdictions that had enacted rules to limit civil forfeiture or had stricter rules than the federal one.
Kind of like bankruptcy law of picking between state and fed, except it is the law enforcement picking which forfeiture program is better for getting the goods.
