Diana Orrick was a loyal foot solider in the Ron Paul revolution in Nevada four years ago, fighting to put the libertarian icon's imprint on the 2012 presidential race, and she had every hope his son, Sen. Rand Paul, would be the natural successor.
But her dream has been dashed, she said, with the younger Mr. Paul struggling to organize, raise money and find a message to reach voters the way his father did.
"Rand is not his father," Ms. Orrick, one of Nevada's two elected Republican National Committee members, said. "I mean the apple hasn't fallen too far from the tree, but it has fallen some distance from the tree."
She was an early supporter of the new Paul presidential campaign, eager to help the Kentucky lawmaker build on his father's success by pushing libertarianism more into the mainstream. The campaign, though, ignored her, she said. So she shifted her allegiance to Donald Trump.

Go Trump!!
Ouch. Rand Paul is just a bit too plastic and slick. His father seems sincere. Rand doesn’t.
rand is just not that good at it. Takes lots of practice to deliver lunacy just right.
“His father is a documented Loon.”
Well, the ‘loon’ was right about more than he was wrong about.
The father is just a doctrinaire libertarian, which breaks down fairly soon in contact with the real world. Rand strikes me as a poseur. At the end of the day, a system guy pretending to be the opposition.
That is all he's got until he perfects the delivery.
being 80- 90% right is ok in many places, but in some instances, will get one killed swiftly.
It is my observation that the Libertarian Party is at war with libertarianism. Libertarians are not just being pulled to Trump; they're being pushed out of the Libertarian Party.
The straw that broke the camel's back a few days ago that convinced me it was time to quit the Libertarian Party was an email I got from Nicholas Sarwark, Chair, Libertarian National Committee, in which he tries to recruit Republican Muslims to the Libertarian Party. It's probably worth a thread by itself; but here is the first paragraph:
Dear Muslim Republicans,
I share your outrage and hurt at Donald Trump's recent comments and policy suggestions about Muslims. I share your outrage and hurt that he still is polling well among Republicans. I share your outrage and hurt that we should even have to discuss such matters. But obviously we do.
Rand Paul has not flopped at all as far as being his father’s successor.
He keeps letting his loopy positions slip out and they drive away nascent coalitions that were beginning to coalesce around him.
You just can’t get any more like Wrong Paul than that.
I just heard an interview with Rand Paul on a radio show. He said he will refuse to appear at the kiddie table debate and only wants to be on the main stage.
I would add that he sounded angry, but he always sounds that way.
Wow. That email...
“I share your outrage and hurt at Donald Trump’s recent comments and policy suggestions about Muslims. I share your outrage and hurt that he still is polling well among Republicans. I share your outrage and hurt that we should even have to discuss such matters. But obviously we do.”
I have absolutely no idea why you would be surprised at this email. The libertarian party supports open borders and unrestricted immigration.
Barack sh!t! Rand lost his support to Bernie who has Rand’s positions on foreign policy and is a Communist to boot, which, young idiots go for.
You can say what you want about Paul (and there is indeed a lot to say), but he would make one hell of a SecTreas for eight years!
Correct. He's a Republican Dukakis.
You think so? I don’t know enough about him.
Thanks! Unbelievable.
Interesting. I think I’ll re-register Unaffiliated also. Right now I register Libertarian most of the time and flip to Republican to attend caucuses and vote in the primary upon the very rare occasions they have a candidate like Trump that I want to support.
I’ve always known that most actual, dyed-in-the-wool Libertarians are nutty as fruitcakes, but this official Libertarian Muslim-love-fest, hate-Trump-fest email (I went to the lp.org website and read it) takes the cake for me. I’m gonna do what you did and make my default registration Unaffiliated.
