The Food and Drug Administration has lifted the ban on blood donations from men who have engaged in sexual relations with another man. Now, in order to donate blood, a man will have had to have been abstinent for the period of one year prior to donation.
This new policy is similar to the deferral period for a woman who has engaged in sexual activity with a man who had previously sexual activity with another man, or for someone who has traveled to a country where malaria is prevalent.
The Food and Drug Administration released final rules on Monday that would allow gay and bisexual men to donate blood if they have been celibate for one year. Under previous rules, men who have had sex with men are banned from donating indefinitely.
âUltimately, the 12-month deferral window is supported by the best available scientific evidence, at this point in time, relevant to the U.S. population. We will continue to actively conduct research in this area and further revise our policies as new data emerge," Dr. Peter Marks, deputy director of the FDAâs Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, wrote in a statement Monday.
The move partially rolls back a 1983 ban that has since been described as medically unwarranted. Efforts to eliminate that ban, which have crawled forward under the Obama administration, mark the biggest step in a decades-old debate on whether gay and bisexual men, who are at a higher risk for HIV/AIDS, can safely donate blood.
I’ve been wondering how to do that. Relatively rare blood type.
Just in time for superbug antibiotic immune viruses. Well, it was a good civilization while it lasted.
Look at what you did there!
Step 2 from the HIV Blood crowd will be clamoring to stop the practice of discriminating against homosexuals by storing up your own blood.
There will be a lot of people, who know they have HIV, giving blood.
I guess only the Jehovah Witnesses are safe now.
Superbug....the grossly promiscuous and drug consuming homosexual community is ACTUALLY a biological environment in which bacteria and viruses (virii?) can develop immunities and breed newer immune generations, rinse and repeat. There’s no telling really, whether some otherwise non-dangerous bug in them has changed to where it would start a huge epidemic in those not in that superbug environment. Am I rambling or making sense?
My brother got Hept C from a transfusion in the early 70’s. He was finally cured of it in Sept of this year.
Only from transfusions, not from other hyper-cultivated germs that are transmitted in other ways.
In addition to HIV, there's Hepatitis and plenty of other blood-borne illnesses. Moreover, there's the possibility of improper blood-typing, etc.
If a person is healthy enough to do so and has enough notice, they are far better off donating their own blood.
I agree with you.
My comment was sarcasm. I should have used the /s tag.
Before Grinder there were homosexual bath houses and book stores, where homosexuals could have anonymous on-premise sex with countless partners. That is how the AIDs epidemic started in the U.S. It then spread through blood transfusions to innocent victims.
And yes, I make the politically incorrect distinction between innocent victims whose only conduct was to need a blood transfusion and those who got AIDs by having homosexual sex with hundreds of partners a year.
Unforgivable.
Complete insanity. Once again, innocent people are sacrificed on the altar of political correctness.
Can the FDA be sued if one get HIV as a result of a change in this policy
I am against this ban. However, it would be pretty easy for a homosexual to lie about their (his) status. Likewise, I think the essence of male homosexuality is to have massive amounts of sex—even if you are in a “committed” relationship. Therefore, only a small handful will abstain for as long as a year.
In both cases, you’re counting on the person not lying. I hope to G-d they test the blood.
There goes the blood supply.Another victim to political correctness.
Absolutely amazing how stupid our government is.
I'm sure we can trust them to tell the truth. < / sarcasm >
Some deranged queer who knows he’s got HIV but isn’t in the system will purposefully donate just to be a psychotic as_hole.
