The Little Drummer Boy is a bigger villain than the Grinch. The Grinch at least has some sort of heart-size condition and soul-gunk problem that he can blame for his lack of basic compassion. What excuse does the Little Drummer Boy have for his behavior? None.
The Little Drummer Boy is just a plain old jerk. Specifically, the kind of jerk who insists on telling us about a time he showed up at a party without a gift and made everyone there miserable by playing what he thinks was a sick drum solo.
But he cannot just tell us. Instead, he constantly interrupts his own narrative with twee drum noises so that it takes longer.

They probably have a problem with "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" too, just because he's not in the Koran!

I agree, and the drum also fits the majesty of the acknowledgement of the birth of a king, so the smallest gift was actually the most appropriate of all. It's beautifully poetic, in fact.

Maybe there wasn't an actual drummer boy in the Bible, but the song is about a young boy giving all the he had. The Bible tells us of an actual woman, thought to be of the lowest ill repute. The "righteous" were offended and yet Christ forgave her because of her act.
Now we have modern day Pharisees complaining that there wasn't an actual drummer boy mentioned in the Bible, so it didn't happen. Or that the little kid was annoying, or that he was self absorbed.
I guess the Pharisees said about as much of the prostitute.
Personally, I find the story of a little drummer boy, to be very Biblical of the heart that Christ calls for in people.
I ALSO find the attitudes of the people complaining on this thread to be very Biblical.

A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. As she stood behind him at his feet weeping...
Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."
Maybe people should spend more time weeping about their unworthiness, like this woman did, than grousing about the supposed unworthiness of a song, about a make believe boy with his unworthy gift.
...Then the little drummer boy grew up and had a son of his own who, in turn, gave the adult Jesus a few fish and some barley loaves.

I really don’t care for any Christmas music, and “Silver Bells” makes me feel violent. I’ve just heard it all too many times. Even with the cleverest arrangements, I always know the next notes right down to the third part harmony. I don’t listen to any of it!
And those big cinnamon pine cones? Yuck!

Or the “Jews Harp Boy!” But I might have liked that! Not a Christmas Music fan. I believe in a religious holiday, not a month or more of lousy music and buying sprees! I celebrate the birth of Christ, that’s it. No presents, just prayer.
I like the song too. While it isn’t my favorite, it is beautiful when sung softly and quietly. I had never really thought about the song until recently, when on a long road trip. Hubby and I had on an all-Christmas music station. I actually had a tear in my eye when I thought of the drummer boy, alone and poor, who wanted so badly to give the Christ Child a gift, but only had the gift of music. A sad but touching story. Moonhawk, the widow in the Temple came to mind for me too!
enraged, we have that version on DVD. It is rarely shown on tv. The Vienna Boys Choir sang. There was a second part that wasn’t as good.

Wow! I love this song. Especially the Bowie/Bing version. I honestly don’t get the hate. It’s a song about a boy who recognizes Jesus Christ and has nothing but his talent to offer in homage. It’s like real life - sometimes that’s all someone has to offer and so they do “their best” and people hate it. Pretty sad.
I used to hate the song. Hated it. Then I came to se it as a metaphor of giving my all to Christ, and now the song really resonates with me. FWIW.
I always picture the baby Jesus really ticked off after being woken up by drum music, taking the drum out of the Little Dummy Boy's hands and breaking it over his head. But that wouldn't be much in the Christmas spirit, would it?
What gets me is his forced "hip" speaking manner talking to his band like he's the King of Cool.
