"I think we need to consider all options when trying to resolve our immigration problem and what to do with the millions of illegal immigrants already living here"; Mr. Cruz wrote in a five-page memo," offering Mr. Bush some flexibility on what has long been a thorny issue for Republicans. "But, right now, I don' think amnesty is the answer."

Cruz was working on Bush’s immigration plan, of course it’ll reflect Bush’s “compassionate conservative” BS.

And 13 years later Donald Trump took a FAR milder tone on Immigration.

In June of 2012 Trump was on Fox News and praised Romney’s approach, saying that he was handling the immigration good, has shown compassion and wants a more permanent approach. But first he advocated permanent residency for Illegal immigrants

For people that have been here for years that have been hard-workers, have good jobs, they’re supporting their family and it’s very, very tough to just say By the way, 22 years, you have to leave. Get out.

I am one of the world’s very conservative people, but I have to tell you on a human basis, how do you throw somebody out that’s lived in this country for twenty years.

He also accused Republicans of being “mean spirited” in their approach to illegal immigration

I remember the Mittster wanted to SELF-DEPORT all illegals during the campaign. That caused a lot of brouhaha.

In 1992 I helped start a Spanish Telemundo TV station. Worked alongside some of those great illegals. Then some of them gasoline bombed my offices and could have killed me. Latter in 2005 had my storage raided by illegals I had befriended.

In short, attitudes evolve with better information.
