The whole interview by Hagel shows exactly what a whiny, weak, pathetic SECDEF he really was. Considering that SECDEF is a constitutional cabinet office and in the direct chain of command, Hagel's proper response to situations such as this one should have been , "I'm sorry, Mr. President, but I'm here to see you privately and not talk to these other people. If we cannot do that then, you'll have my resignation on your desk by COB today."
But he didn't, and never did, instead letting an unelected hack like Susan Rice, who has no authority within the Chain of Command, walk all over him.
