GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz said Thursday that the Middle East was more secure when key dictators were still in power, and said too many Democrats and Republicans have supported toppling Middle Eastern governments to the benefit of the United States' enemies.
"Was the world, in fact, in the Middle East, a more secure place when Saddam Hussein was in power, when Moammar Gadhafi was in power, and when [Bashar] Assad wasn't fighting for his life in Syria?" asked MSNBC's Joe Scarborough.
"Of course it was," Cruz answered. "That's not even a close call."
Cruz said Gadhafi did bad things but had worked with the United States and "was actively cooperating in hunting down and stopping radical Islamic terrorists." The Texas senator said Gadhafi's ouster has turned Libya into a "chaotic warzone ruled by radical Islamic terrorists."
"We need to focus on killing bad guys," Cruz said. "What has been a mistake, and we've seen a consistent mistake in foreign policy is far too often, we've seen Democrats and a lot of establishment Republicans in Washington get involved in toppling Middle Eastern governments. And it ends up benefiting the bad guys. It ends up handing them over to radical Islamic terrorists."
Cruz ranks first in the Washington Examiner's newest GOP presidential power rankings.
Yes it was.
Thank you obama.
I respect Egypt. They took it upon themselves to take their country back from the MB and their enablers 0blama/Hillary.
Cruz is right. Saddam and Assad slaughtered Isis animals for sport.
Taking out Saddam and weakening Assad unleashed the beast that brought terrorism to San Bernardino.
Another Saddam will have to be found to stabilize the middle east and keep Isis in check.
I agree that’s a better word.
I thought we had warning. We just didn’t act on them.
Why did we invade Iraq? Any clue?
Trump said exactly that..back in May or June. Cruz has NEVER said it...until now
Under Hussein, Assad and Gahdafi or how ever you spell it Christians could live in peace and the middle east was more secure.
This foreign policy has been a cluster F@@@ of the highest order and the establishment wants to carry it on, while the left have no idea what to do except take out people with drones.
Why?
Iraq, Syria, and Libya could have Christians living in some peace, the mad muslims were controlled, and there was stability.
Now fairy boy has caused this mess in those 3 countries. Iraq was controlled until the fairy ordered us out.
Libya is a total mess.
Syria has gone to crap.
Europe now is in a mess.
Trump said exactly that..back in May or June. Cruz has NEVER said it...until now
No kidding, I thought...gee, this sounds familiar.

Glad to see Ted catching up with Trump’s ME foreign policy stances.
M2T
Iraq has been a headache (with brief holidays) ever since America invaded in 2003, but let’s not lose sight of the fact that it was a headache before America invaded, too. Here’s a trip down memory lane. Saddam Hussein ...
- waged a long war with Iran during the ‘80s
- invaded Kuwait
- developed and used chemical weapons
- funded Palestinian attacks on Israel
- built a nuclear reactor (bombed by Israel)
- shot at American military planes patrolling the no-fly zones established after Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait
- attacked Israel with Scud missiles
- openly celebrated 9/11
- plotted to assassinate a former US president
This man did not create security in the Middle East, or even stability.
Bush got conned by the NWO cabal into overthrowing Saddam. That was the start of the NWO/U.N. plot to grow the Caliphate and eventually the start of ISIS. Unfortunately Bush didn't realize it at the time.
This happens to be what Trump said many YEARS ago !
RExactly; this all began with that idiot Carter !
Trump said it, again, back in October....

Cruz is stealing from Trump, yet again.
Teddy come lately is a dollar short and a day late....again.
Yes, Cruz said that, but he is always purloining things that Trump has said and/or written long ago. He’s a johnny-come-lately, who doesn’t have a bright thought of his own.
re Saddam Hussein: except for that whole large-scale armed robbery, and threatening to do the same for the whole Arabian Peninsula, in 1990. Tell me there would have been an upside to letting him do that.
By the way, “Cruz or Lose”. I just have no illusions of his perfection, or even his .80% alignment with my opinions.
Very flattering....for Trump ;-)
