The best part is when she asks the obvious follow-up -- is a path to legalization "amnesty"? -- and he won't even make eye contact.
There's a spectrum of answers to this question on the right, of course:
1. Amnesty is citizenship without preconditions. That's the strictest definition, and naturally the one preferred by Beltway Republicans like Marco Rubio in his Gang of Eight days. (Marco Rubio circa 2010 had a different view.) As long as you're forcing illegals to jump through some sort of hoop, be it learning English, paying back taxes, going to the back of the line, etc, that's not amnesty -- even if you're granting them citizenship. Anything short of immediate voting rights for illegals, no questions asked, is A-OK.
2. Amnesty is citizenship. That's Jeb Bush's position, as I understand it. Jeb will legalize 'em, let 'em stay in the U.S. and work, but allowing them to become full citizens with voting rights goes too far in rewarding them for breaking our laws. The most an illegal can aspire to be is a permanent legal resident. Beyond that lies amnesty.
3. Amnesty is legalization unless you've improved security first. That's Ted Cruz's position (and Marco Rubio's current position), again as I understand it. This isn't so much a literal definition of "amnesty," which is a matter of legal status, as it is a political compromise between the two prongs of comprehensive immigration reform. Legalization (i.e. work permits) is on the table if and only if we see concrete improvements in internal enforcement first. Border hawks got suckered in 1986 by accepting promises of future border security in return for immediate grants of amnesty; despite the Gang of Eight's best efforts, they won't get suckered again.

If you are letting them stay its amnesty. You can’t take all that wall street money that Heidi has raised without bending a knee and it looks like that’s what will happen.
“Do they ask sanders/clinton the same questions?”
As a matter of fact, they do, at least for this particular question, and during the first Democrat debate their answer is absolutely, 100%, unabashedly, unequivocally pro-amnesty, so there’s no need to ask it of them anymore.
The reason they hammer Cruz on this is because he refuses to give an yes or no answer, unlike Trump, whom they DON’T bother to ask this anymore because Trump too has made his position crystal clear. Cruz is dodging and weaving on this issue, which just happens to be THE most important campaign issue for the 2016 elections, and the media senses weakness, and attacks Cruz like a Lion attacks a wounded Wildebeest.
Trump’s NEVER said anything about ‘circumventing the quotas”. Again, you’re interpretation....not Trump’s words.
This will be the winner take all debate in this election.
The other side will want some form of amnesty or legal status for all illegal aliens. Either will lead to citizenship and or the right to vote. Our liberal judges will see to that. Only way to prevent it is to enforce the law, deport them all and secure the borders.
Enforce the law, build the wall, secure the borders, deport them all, end sanctuary cities, end anchor babies, tighten up immigration policy, control who enters the country!
Our successful nominee will be in 100% opposition to the treasonous dhimmicrat plan on this. Border security, national security is THE issue in this election. Our side needs to harden up and stay hard on enforcement!
History proves if you give an inch on border security, you lose it all.
This one is for all the marbles.
Go, Cruz, GO!!
Go, Trump, GO!
You’re = your :- /
The end of the quota line is 5 to 10 years out.
How do you expedite them back without jumping the quota line?
Amnesty is when the rules/laws are bent, broken or ignored, accruing to the benefit of the law breakers.
Don't enforce the border? Amnesty on a timer. (They've been here 20 years, you can't send them back, etc...)
You can't deport 11~~30 million...amnesty by neglect.
Issue work permits for those ineligible...amnesty by fiat.
We'll secure the borders FIRST...amnesty by distraction.
Ted Cruz is a brilliant guy. Surely he understands that a democratic republic relies upon the consent of the governed. That is obtained through the principle of inalienable rights, and the Rule of Law.
That means, simply, that laws shall be faithfully executed.
It doesn't mean those in power will enforce only laws with which they agree, or ignore those they do not. It doesn't mean they will enforce the laws after a wall is built, or enforce the law next time, or enforce the law after we get a new one. Why would we believe that laws are anything but suggestions for the 'right' people? Why would we believe that any immigration laws would be enforced, ever?
And that's how a representative democracy becomes a banana republic. Ted Cruz is smart enough to understand this. Does his background cloud his judgment? I don't get it.
See the beauty in the plan, grasshopper? They will be expedited once they’ve followed the LEGAL process.
Now, if Congress votes to change/adjust the quota line, that’s an entirely different issue.
You are a liar. Iâm so sick of the immature Trump-haters.
No one is falsifying anyone’s position. And no one is “hardcore” anything. By not answering an important question concerning amnesty, Cruz is hurting his own record. Try that lame excuse on someone else.
Please GROW UP and know that people have their own opinions about issues and they donât have to always agree with yours.
We are adults. If you can’t handle an issue that affects our children and grand-children and one that involves our Nation’s future Sovereignty, then don’t click on my threads and move along.
Go Trump!
BS. Jeff Sessions has been fighting amnesty, at times almost alone, since at least 2006 during W's first amnesty push, then again in 2007 and every year since.
Sessions spent far more time fighting amnesty before Cruz was even elected to the Senate that Cruz has spent.
Our successful nominee will be in 100% opposition to the treasonous dhimmicrat plan on this. Border security, national security is THE issue in this election.
Our side needs to harden up and stay hard on enforcement!
Amen!!
ONE guy already has :)
Bingo.
Cruz, Trump.. I’ll take either. Or both.
Slamming Cruz is counter productive.
And Trump..
I don’t care what make of bulldozer he drives so long as he clears that brush.
Cruz is going to have to decide.
Is he on the side of the Cheap Labor Express, the US Chamber of Commerce, SEIU, etc.—or is he on America’s side.
He can’t have it both ways.
He does get money from big donors. He has never denied that. That is a problem.
No. No. No. NO anti-Christ OPRAH.
You’re absolutely right, Jim, on all counts.
Immigration/amnesty is Election 2016’s critical issue.
Mr. Trump is rock solid which is why he’s my first choice.
What is AMNESTY? A sovereign act of pardon and oblivion for past acts, granted by a government to all persons (or to certain persons) who have been guilty of crime or delict, generally political offenses.
What is PARDON? An act of grace, proceeding from tlie power intrusted with the execution of the laws, which exempts the individual on whom it is bestowed from the punishment the law inflicts for a crime he has committed.
Amnesty is a pardon granted to a group of people who've committed the same crime(s).
A pardon exempts the amnestied from the punishments prescribed by law.
Juan McCain and Ted Cruz and W and numerous politicians have played games with the definition of amnesty. If the punishment prescribed by law is not applied, its's an amnesty.
All this BS about allowing illegals to stay, no matter what it's called, and saying that's not amnesty, is just politicians lying through their teeth to fool the voters, and to avoid using the politically toxic term "amnesty"..
Actually, any proposal short of deportation is an amnesty plus the jackpot of being allowed to stay in the US and probably become a citizen. Double and triple lies from politicians who play the amnesty word game.
The only way to clean up the mess is for ALL invaders to go home. Let EVERY ONE OF THEM who wants to come back get in line. If they aren't all evaluated before being allowed entry, the deportation part will be ignored and we'll be stuck with everyone who's here.
Why doesn't Cruz come out and say he supports Trump's policy on this 100%? And if he doesn't, tell us what parts he doesn't support, and why. We don't need games, nuance, and position papers. We need a strong stand against the invasion of the US.
Does Cruz support Trump's Wall?
#97 should have been to comment #1.
No. This is a...
“Let’s get a clear answer from a candidate concerning a topic that is of critical importance to Freepers” caucas thread.
I like Cruz too! But illegal immigration is greatly affecting minority communities. It needs to be addressed. You may not care but illegal immigration effects my children and grand-children. There is NO time for foolishness.
