Imagine, for a moment, the once unthinkable scenario that Washington Republicans are beginning to contemplate: The GOP convention in Cleveland with Donald Trump as the nominee.
After Melania Trump and the Trump kids get prime time spots to talk about how The Donald will make America great again, every Republican senator and Senate nominee will get a turn at the podium to talk about the Republican Party and its new leader, Donald Trump.
New Hampshireâs Sen. Kelly Ayotte describes the âbeautiful wallâ coming between the U.S. and Mexico. Sen. Rob Portman talks about waterboarding, which Trump has endorsed with a âyou bet your ass I would!â Sen. Ron Johnson defends the constitutionality of Trumpâs call to surveil certain mosques, and Sen. Rand Paul reminisces about Trump making fun of his hair and height.
Itâs not going to happen that way, of course. Every candidate except Portman, who represents Ohio, would find a âscheduling conflictâ to avoid the awkwardness. But the prospect of otherwise strong swing-state Republicans having to get elected or re-elected with Donald Trump at the top of the GOP ticket becomes more real every day.
A Trump-topped ticket is a mouthwatering prospect for Democrats, especially when it comes to retaking control of the Senate. And if Hillary Clinton can win the presidency, which Democrats seem to believe a Trump nomination would almost guarantee, Democrats would only need to retake four seats, not five, to win control of the Senate.

The Establishment is worried that some of their moderate senators might be swept OUT in the republican primaries, or will be weak-kneed about supporting a conservative-backed nominee, because they will be "uncomfortable."
Yet they LOVED, LOVED LOVED forcing conservatives to vote for such an odious man as John McCain, or a moderate loser like Mitt Romney. They didn't care at all when WE were uncomfortable.
They're not getting one of their own this time, and they're whining like babies!!
A President during one term has the power to sway State Senate elections twice - for two thirds of the Senate. An active President during those cycles in the right states could do wonders.
I’m 200 pounds. I’m 200 pounds. I’m 200 pounds.
Damn. Didn’t work.
Saying something over and over dont make it so, dems.
“.....And if Hillary Clinton can win the presidency, which Democrats seem to believe a Trump nomination would almost guarantee, Democrats would only need to retake four seats, not five, to win control of the Senate.”
Another example of mental masturbation.
So, IOWs all these sell out and over flowing crowds are a mirage? And instead of fading, his numbers are climbing. Plus there are so many people out there who haven’t taken the time to listen to the man, so he hasn’t peaked....
BUT THIS IS THE BEST OF IT. Trump is truly a candidate for all the people...liberals, independents, conservatives, evangelicals, etc etc He takes them all...
Hahahaha!....more doom and gloom from the Beltway media elites.
Sorry chumps, but no sale on your insider angst. I hope that Trump gets shoved down your throats - and you WILL like it.
I’ve been thinking it might be a good time to start putting some “Trump” supporters on Congressional ballots.
I think they are more afraid of the wave the Donald might bring and that he’d play his hand and ask Mitch McConnell to vacate his Majority Leader position. He might do so on his own, he is political animal and not totally stupid. Tangent to this, the DNC might have to look at all their laggards running things including Little Debbie and begin rebuilding. If the @zz whooping is as big as I think it could be, the big dollar contributors are gonna want a new team in the front office. It is getting so bad for these DNC donors, they are beginning looking like Detroit Lions fans...

So if democrats think a Trump nomination will guarantee a Hillary win...
Who do democrats attack and vilified Trump so much now?????
One thing I know and this article confirms it, the Democrat National Committee is buying Ex Lax by the case. They, like the GOPe are scared poopless. Another good reason to vote Trump.
Trump won't take liberals. He'll split independents at some point. He'll take conservatives and evangelicals because he's closer to their positions than any Democrat could ever be.
I doubt he'll have coattails in the Senate. The Republican seats that are in danger would remain in danger regardless of who the nominee is.
Heh. Ayotte, that traitor, trying to scuttle back into the good graces of the Tea party she cold-shouldered after safely in office.
Don't be so sure. Those Sanders voters have been ignored by those who control the dems. The party has no young rising stars, Obama's been all about the Obama agenda and not growing the Democratic Party. A lot of liberals see their safety and their country disappearing, don't like hillary, and will vote for Trump to shake things up.
It's the Morlocks of DC and their enablers vs everyone else.
That's like saying that if Bush were the nominee then a lot of Conservatives would vote for Hillary to shake things up. Nonsense. Liberals who don't like Clinton will stay home just like Conservatives who didn't like Bush would stay home.
I thought this comment after the article nailed it.
“Trump is running on securing the border, negotiating trade deals advantageous to the American people, following our current immigration laws, taking good care of our Vets, narrowing the horrendous regulations on our small businesses and reigning in the corruption and bloat of the EPA, IRS, VA, Dept. of Ed. and other grossly overgrown departments of our government.”
the phenomenon is called coat tails and has been present since well, since there were coat tails
the articles will be arguing the prospect of does the donald have coat tails
They tolerated Reagan, and once he was gone, it was business as usual, going along with the democrats, tax increases, new entitlement programs, etc.
On the other hand, if the nomination is stolen from Trump, the anger will be so intense that I wonder how many Republicans will win. I can't think of any elected 'pubs who've embraced Trump's candidacy.
