Shocker: Avis Car Rental Bars Israeli Executive from Renting
Observer News ^ | November 22, 2015 | Ken Kurson

On Saturday evening, Dov Bergwerk arrived at the Avis branch on West 76th Street and Broadway. Accompanied by his wife Ruth, the Bergwerks were planning to join friends for dinner in Westchester. Mr. Bergwerk, a senior vice president and general corporate counsel at the Israeli pharmaceutical giant Teva, got out his driver's license, reservation number and "Wizard" loyalty card - he's rented from Avis dozens of times before - and anticipated the usual smooth transition into a nondescript mid-sized sedan.

That's when the trouble started.

OK, your post makes my point.

Many Freepers have called for the public execution of the Avis Company for what appears to be the actions of a rogue employee.

Just scroll up to see who they are.

Should Avis have a chance to investigate and defend itself against this employee?

Well, scroll up to those same posters to see their answer.

Their answer is HELL NO!

Off with the head of Avis, roll the body in the gutter.

Seehs, this is the kind of crap I see on the Left, and it looks like a whole slew of Freepers have the same infectious disease.

“This was a case of a couple of local employees at that particular office who had an agenda of their own”

Did you read the article? You know the part where Avis corporate doubled-down, pretty much calling the Israelis liars and standing behind their obviously racist employees?

“”How shallow are you? 10 years old?”

No - I’m a female, shy a few months of 80 years old and if you’re not accepting the AVIS statement at face value, what are you doing?

I don’t think we need people here who make a habit of insulting others they don’t agree with. There are plenty of other sites where you’d feel more at home with those who can only hand out insults!

I’d be interested in an intelligent response if you can come up with one.

Here's the way I see this...

A couple of Social Justice Warriors, Obama-influenced, Black Lives Matter followers decided that banning Israeli documents would be a good policy for their company, despite not actually being the company's policy. Hence the following:

From the original article: A reservation agent named Angelline declined to honor Mr. Bergwerk's reservation, saying that it was company policy not to recognize Israeli documents.

That's what this is about. Agelline and Shamoura are simply doing to Israel what was done to South Africa...

However, this guy isn't a country, he's a man. A regular, loyal user of the company's product. He was absolutely discriminated against. These two SJW's cannot be allowed to get away with it.

FReepers need to care! Why?

Because we're already in their crosshairs. They will do this to us next.

"Oh, I see you come from Alabama... I'm sorry, but Alabama voted for that Racist, Trump (or Cruz). Our company policy does not allow us to accept docuemtyns from Red states."

Sound far-fetched? Why? It happened to this Israeli.

Ok, I think I understand and agree with you. I will support AVIS disciplining and/or terminating these two employees (and further up the chain if necessary) for discrimination against a long time Israeli customer in good standing with an established Wizard account.

“Sounds like a Seinfeld episode.”

Except, you know, it lacks humor.

You sure do like to exaggerate. Time for you to dump the rest of the bottle down the drain, go to bed and get ready for another busy day at work.

Just stop. Please?

You are seeing this backwards. We ARE complaining about the two social justice, black live matters employees.

It is Avis who is doubling down in favor of them.

I did read the article.

He didn’t provide a passport to the customer service agent, despite one being required for rental according to company policy.

Look at the quote from the wife — “There was no way they would rent a car with that license. There was no way to reason with them.”

Yeah how totally unreasonable for the company to uphold their own policy and for the employee to request the documents she was taught to.

Later he later contacted the national offices on the phone, and *claims* he offered a passport then to clear things up and that it was denied.

Is that a credible claim? Not really.

One possibility is that a big shot exec threw a tantrum because an employee refused to violate policy, and by the time he got on the phone to national they figured out this arrogance and bullying wasn’t the kind of behavior they want to reward.

Another phony claiming discrimination when there wasn’t any at all? Probably.

I will never rent from Avis again. They lost a customer. And that manager and clerk should be fired.

“If you ever have a fender bender with a woman that looks like”

Happened to a co worker. Her insurance company called her, at our job, to berate her for not reporting that there were two pregnant women that were also in the other car, and were injured. The kicker was, the other car was at fault, for running a stop sign. Fortunately, the accident was witnessed by an off duty Long Beach cop, who gave her his business card, and straightened out the matter of liability, and the two invisible passengers.

respectfully, I think you got it backwards.

I bet the employee has no opinion or knowledge of Israel.

The company taught her to require either a passport or international drivers license.

The customer presented an israeli drivers license, which according to company policy is not adequate documentation to provide a rental.

I bet you the big wig exec threw a fit and tried to bully her into taking just the israeli drivers license even though it goes against her training and company policy.

She wasn’t impressed and rightly stood her ground.

Later on the phone with national avis he claims to have offered a passport then. By which time they had already decided he was a problem customer they rather not rent to.

The big wig exec ran to the press and falsely cried “discrimination!” when there wasn’t even the tiniest bit involved.

Sure, I’m outraged that people who I want to respect have decided to crucify Avis while the story is still in motion.

I emailed Avis just now as follows:

Thanks for your response.
What specific aspects of your ongoing investigation suggests “that this customer is unfairly maligning us with unfounded allegations.” Video? Witness statements? Previous encounters with this former customer? What? Or, are you simply relying on the narrative proffered by your employees?
Overall, this, your initial response, strikes me as woefully tone deaf, and reeks of a “circle the wagons” mentality that will prolong Avis’ PR problems.
I hope you see to it that the facts relating to this unfortunate episode are determined objectively and reported in a timely manner.

That’s good. I write poorly. I have to edit a lot. I either write too much or write (thank you engineering) in bullet points.

Having to write Education-Psychobabble papers and Legal Briefs was headache enducing.

I am a cut-to-the-chase kind of gal. Don’t use big words either. (except in those darn Education-Psychobabble papers written in Education College and Legal Briefs for an attorney).

Stop the Avis bashing. Each and every petty complaint thus far on this thread could apply to every car rental franchise on the planet. This has to do with an idiot employee or two and quite possibly a jerk for a customer. Not Avis.

Interesting. According to her LinkedIn page, Shamoura Welch-Robinson's last job before Avis was loss prevention detective at Bloomingdales. So now she's suing them?

Employers should google. Shamoura Welch-Robinson need not be employable.

If she disobeyed direct orders from superiors, she deserves to be fired.

I as well as quite a few people here have sent AVIS a protest letter and I’ve canceled my account.

You are either kidding or just plain ignorant.
