Ben Carson will endorse statehood for Puerto Rico tomorrow at an event with Ricky Rosello, a gubernatorial candidate for the pro-statehood party on the island, according to a source close to Rosello's campaign.
The source said the condition for Carson speaking at the event was that he come out for statehood. A request for comment from Carson's campaign on the endorsement was not immediately returned.
The issue of statehood for Puerto Rico, a commonwealth of the United States, does not neatly breakdown along traditional Democrat and Republican lines on the island, which is also dealing with a financial and health care crisis.
Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio have previously said they support statehood if Puerto Ricans vote for it. Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush have endorsed bankruptcy protections for the island, but Rubio does not.

“Why didnât he just run as a dem?”
Because he would have been LAUGHED OFF THE STAGE. He is capable of doing MUCH MORE DAMAGE (to us) as a Republican.
...don’t be surprised if Hillary (or whoever) winds up picking him as their running mate in 2016.
No way, Ben. Let them declare independence (or we can do it for them)—no authomatic right of entry into the U.S., no welfare for the island, no bailing it out.
Friendly relations, but as two separate countries. Certainly not statehood.
Because that’s where they keep the Pyramid grain.
Tried to tell folks he wasn’t ready for prime time.
Well, here we are, just where we knew we’d eventually be.
Now, back to trashing Trump 24/7/(30,31,28,29)
I have been for Ted Truz all along, while warming towards Carson a bit. After this, no more.
To create chaos for the GOP?
Buzzfeed...? I’ll wait for confirmation.
Honest to God? Is the title true?
I don’t want to hear another word about him or from him.
I’ve had enough!
That was my understanding as well.
I wonder if Carson wants a Marshall plan to bail out Puerto Rico. You can tell they are socialist Democrats the never ever saw Freebees they would not take or ever thought they could spend too much money.
I say they Greeked themselves into bankruptcy and in our sorry financial position I would rather not have a State that needs a bailout, and doesn’t even want to be Americans.
Carson belongs in the Democrat camp not the Republicans.
Oh crikes somebody push him off the stage. Paging Donald Trump.
Carson is starting to sound more and more like a Dem. And he is for amnesty and gun control.
This is the kind of thinking that is at the root of many of our troubles around the word and here at home with the illegals.
Not everyone wants US style democracy. Not everyone wants US citizenship. Not every backwater country dreams of becoming a US state.
They do like our money though.

The people of Puerto Rico consistently say they do not want statehood.
They are far better off financially today with their status as a commonwealth than they would be as a state and they know it.
On the other hand, the USA would be better off just cutting Puerto Rico loose as an independent country.
Oh goody, a Bankrupt Island full of Welfare Recipients, just what we need.
I always understood that Puerto Ricans didn’t want statehood. Or was I misinformed?
Carson appears to be following the same script as Hillary Clinton.. “How to SINK YOURSELF.”

Right.
Just what the U.S.needs: another state with Spanish speaking citizens.
