Politico has rewritten the headline, lede, and several portions of the text of an article accusing Ben Carson of "fabricating" part of his personal biography involving the Military Academy at West Point.
The story, bearing the byline of reporter Kyle Cheney, now omits the original version's declarations that Carson's statements were false or fraudulent, as seen in an archive of the article.

Since you are resorting to insults, I have won.
I notice you say nothing about Cruz, who I have researched extensively, so I know I am right. And so do you. So you are trying to cloud the issue with Carson. I really don’t care about him, I think he’s another flash in the pan, like Fiorina. I’ve researched enough to know I wouldn’t vote for him in the primary; not sure about the general yet. No point wasting my time more than that.
Carson did get caught with his own words.
I wanted to also let people know that if someone says they were offered a âfull scholarshipâ to a service academy (Army, Navy, Air-Force, Marines), they’re either lying or ignorant of the facts. In Carson’s case, there is no such thing as a “scholarship” to West Point. The government subsidizes every student - they’re effectively in the Army and their training and education are free.
Indeed, I was not surprised, but disappointed to see Trump carrying Politico's water on this. Now who's the water boy? Carson should send Trump a case of water.
As another Freeper noted, yes there is a West Point “scholarship”, or so says the USMA:
I agree with you. I have no doubt that a man of Westmoreland’s stature could claim he could get an appointment for a bright young man. And he would have been able to make it happen. Nor do I doubt that such a qualified student and JROTC leader could also get an appointment....especially since he was accepted to Yale in those days.
I think they offered help to Carson and he said he wanted to go a different direction.
The problem with the media is that it’s hard for us to prove things that have happened in our lives in the sense of irrefutable proof. The media could then write, “unproven assertion”, and it would make us look like liars.
I’ve had folks here on FR actually challenge the fact that I am a retired Army chaplain. I can think of no way to prove it to them without revealing way too much information in the cyber-world. So, I generally just ignore them.
I agree.

This was a MSM political assassination attempt. I think Trump made a big mistake spouting off about it so early, and I am a big Trump fan. I’ve also read Carson’s book and it is a must-read....couldn’t put it down. What I fear is that this Politico smear will have the same effect as the Tina Fey SNL sketch which now has LIV believing that Sarah Palin said she could see Russia from her house. We just can’t let the MSM get away with publishing false narratives. Thought Dr. Carson sounded good in the presser. I think he should keep hitting the MSM on their failure to vet Obama.
Since you have not articulated Carson on the subjects mentioned without inserting your own opinion, your claim of “winning” rings hollow.
Claiming that he was given a “full scholarship” betrays a lack of knowledge about how service academies work and I don’t think any accepted cadet would have used those words. Carson needs to clarify something that seems at best very unclear as appears in his own written works. And try taking a day or two off from trying to make people like him.
Huh? What are you smoking?
I’m betting a number of freepers wish they could edit their comments as well...
Uh, I see what you did, there.
Your link uses as its justification what has been discredited in the Politico.
Levin on his radio show just said at least two separate advertisements for West Point have been found from back then in magazines [at least one of them a magazine for blacks] about full “scholarships” to the academy.
He didn’t say he was an accepted cadet.
“Article served its purpose. It exposed Trump.”
Disagree.
Trump self funds and doesn’t let the media run him!
LAWSUIT! Put them out of business.
I was ready to drop my support for Carson when I read the article this morning.
Now, I am utterly so mad at Politico I just donated.
I never donate.
However, I will say Carson really really needs to get a new national team. They are utterly inept at getting ahead of these things.
No, he didn’t.
The violence thing is easily explained by people acting differently in private vs. public.
