Geologists have discovered a second magma chamber beneath volcano They believe this feeds the smaller chamber directly below the mountain Earthquakes in the area may be a sign of magma pumping between them Geologists still consider Mount St Helens to be of high risk of erupting

Its scarred and jagged crater is a reminder of the terrible devastation that Mount St Helens wrought over the Washington countryside 35 years ago.

Now a new study of the volcanic plumbing lurking beneath the 8,363ft (2,459 metre) summit suggests the volcano could yet again blow its top in an explosive eruption.

Geologists studying the volcano, which is responsible for the most deadly eruption in US history, have discovered a second enormous magma chamber buried far beneath the surface.

This giant pool of molten rock, which lies between seven to 25 miles (40km) below the surface, is connected to a slightly smaller chamber that lies directly beneath the mountain.

Is there any possibility they could aim this more toward Portland’s 23rd st. area?

On the “Suck Scale”, with 10 being the highest level of suck... that thing erupting would be 15.

Perhaps you speak of Mt. Hood...it just doesn’t seem to want to get busy. But, St. Helen’s is only about 25 miles from Portland, but is just pointed the wrong way.

About a week before it blew, I was standing on the ridge in the lower right:

Does anybody remember the cantankerous Harry Truman? He would have made an awesome Freeper.

Anyway, the eruption of Mount St Helens in 1980 will always remind me of the departure of Harry Truman and the coming of Ronald Reagan.

I say we drill down to the magma and pump it out. We could pour it into gardens statue molds. And everybody could have two or three free garden statues.

Either that or we could pour it into blocks and build giant grain storage facilities. But some politician would just come along and use it as a grave and monument to himself.

If we could find a way of keeping it hot, we could build it into a Medusa border patrol gun. The statues of lava covered illegals would serve as a deterent to others seeking to enter illegally.

It’s hard to believe that has been 35 years ago. It was indeed, but in my mind it seems more recent.

Keeping in mind that this is a 5,000 foot mountain from its base.

Yes I do. I camped at Spirit Lake and climbed St. Helens the year before it blew.

Lol, that movie forever corrupted the word “magma” for me, in the same way “A Clockwork Orange” twisted “Singing In The Rain” for me...

Every single time I read or hear the word, I hear that exact wording inside my brain...

Hope it does. This will throw off every fraud scientists estimates about climate change.

Discovered?
Look roughly 2 km down, the fluids travel up, then stop about 2 km down where they collect for awhile before moving upwards upon reaching critical pressure.
