Donald Trumpâs high standing in the polls is attributable entirely to the fact that heâs not a Washington insider, not part of the racket, and despite his wealth really might actually give a damn about the Little Guy. So why is he saying things like this?
Donald Trump on Wednesday defended government property seizures as a ânecessary thing,â even when it means involuntarily taking property from a private owner to transfer it to another business. Trump was speaking to reporters outside the capital statehouse moments before formally filing his candidacy for the February primary, and the Washington Examiner pressed him on his record of using eminent domain laws to expand his casino empire.
âProperty rights are a big issue in New Hampshire,â the Examiner noted. âIn Atlantic City you used eminent domain laws aggressively to expand your casino.â
Trump interjected by calling this a âstupid questionâ before launching into a defense of eminent domain. âI am all for private property rights,â Trump said. âThereâs nobody who wants property taken away less than I do, believe me. I would lose a lot of money if my property were taken away. But when youâre building a road, when youâre building a highway, when youâre building whatever it is youâre building from a municipal standpoint, you may need a corner of a piece of property.â As he said this, he pinched his fingers together to demonstrate the smallness of the property.
The abstract reasoning may be sound â although in the Supreme Courtâs disgraceful Kelo decision it certainly was not â but the optics are terrible. It smacks of Romneyism, a cluelessness about how ordinary people live their lives.
Eminent Domain for PUBLIC use is in the Constitution. The outrageous Kelo decision expanded this to include any PRIVATE use that might potentially bring in an extra nickel of taxes.
Cruz was not looking for cheap labor...he was looking for gifted or already educated professionals that can benefit the US. Why would you intentionally ignore that?
The cheap labor issues and or misuse of the H1B program can be dealt with through legislation, but it’s no reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater when every country in the West has a equivalent for this program.
I see this as a knee jerk isolationist move by some and I reject it. We are talking about a small portion of the Visa system, and I agree that the entire thing needs overhauling, but not eliminated.
We simply need to regain control, and once we do, we can use the tools we have like a hiatus, or in H1B we can require that a corporation justify it’s wages and needs, and the protections of current employees if it wants to participate.
To be flat out against H1B is foolish IMO. Like everything else in this current regime, it has been exploited, but we can stop that. If you don’t believe we can, then what’s the point in continuing the farce that is the once venerable USA.
Let’s just kill it and be done with it. A failed experiment.
No, because not enough people give a dam' about property rights any more. Not even on FR.
How often is the President involved in eminent domain matters compared to being involved in stopping the millions of illegal aliens that are pouring across the border?
Agree
The president does not make that decision. The supreme Court did. States can can do something about it.
I am much more worried about illegal immigration. If we have open borders, nothing else will matter. We will be over as a country.
OK....Then that presupposes that everyone buys or owns property for a monetary gain.
But that’s simply not the case.
What Trump said about ED yesterday, watch. The link goes straight to the question; https://youtu.be/9mOxWDBIAwk?t=690
In fact watch the whole video. Its’ raw unedited and starts when Trump gets out of his vehicle to go file in NH. It spontaneously turns into a press conference and rally.
Trump may not be perfect, but he is the only candidate generating the support and turnout it will take to beat Hillary.
The president can’t do spit about abortion either, but a lot of Freepers seem to think it’s important that candidates take a stand.
You bump yer head or something?
No.
Yeah....lol......where did you learn that? Must have been a re-education camp..
Who is talking about abortion or gay marriage? The topic requested input on Emminant Domain, and I gave it, as I understand it. It isn’t my cause or anything.
Watch what Trump actually said - post 66
The Don could barbecue live puppies over hot coals while urinating on an original copy of the Constitution, and there’d still be lots of Freepers left to shout “Woooooohooo!!! Go get ‘em, Trump!!!!”
Yes but the President chooses the Supreme Court Justices.
Then we have every tiny peccadillo from the Trump haters who don't care about this issue, but a way to cry like a little girl about Trump.
" Trump is polling in the neighborhood of ~25%, and has been for months--he's hit his ceiling, and for good reason.
Not really GOPe guy and you are. You believe those NBCLSD polling.
" Trump is polling in the neighborhood of ~25%, and has been for months--he's hit his ceiling, and for good reason.
Trump is really several pointS higher.
I watched the video. He was misleading—notice how he kept minimizing the amount of land taken in eminent domain as a “little corner of land” or somesuch? That’s not always the case. Very often it’s peoples entire homes, entire plots of land that are taken. Just ask Vera Coking.
He was also dead wrong on the facts. Eminent domain is often (and constitutionally) used for public uses—infrastructure projects, etc. But what the Kelo decision said (and what Trump has tried to do in his business life) is that it can also be used to obtain land for private developments, as long as the development would increase tax revenue. How any conservative could even think of supporting that is absolutely incredible.
Cruz would/should never take the VP job...he’s running for president...if he did, I would not be inclined to approve of that.
If he loses he will run again..The VP is a trash position, as illustrated by Joe Biden.
