Nuclear fusion just got a boost with the arrival of this stellarator
Fox News ^ | 11/2/2015 | Michael Casey

Researchers could be one step closer to producing energy through nuclear fusion with word that a device called the stellarator is set to go online later this year in Germany.

The largest contraption its kind, the Wendelstein 7-X fusion device is housed in a branch of the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) near Munich. It won’t actually produce energy, the Institute said, but will be used to test the “specially shaped magnet coils which produce a magnetic cage which confines the plasma and keeps it away from the walls of the plasma vessel.”

Wall Street Journal of 10/24/2015 had an interesting article:

“The Myth of Basic Science
Does scientific research drive innovation?
Not very often: Technological evolution has
a momentum of its own, and it has little to do with
the abstractions of the lab.”

Money quote:

“In 2007, the economist Leo Sveikauskas of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics concluded that returns from many forms of publicly financed R&D are near zero and that ‘many elements of university and government research have very low returns, overwhelmingly contribute to economic growth only indircetly, if at all.’ “

The article does concede that we did get some things from gov’t funding, like the Internet (and Tang!), but that given the huge amount of funding, it’d be odd not to get something.

You an engineer? My wife burst out laughing when I showed it to her. She is one in the auto industry. Said it sounded like the newspeak at Government Motors, Ford and Chrysler. Apparently the Japanese don’t do it for baloney, rather they do it for things like Kaizen which is just the Japanese word for improvement.

Oh, and I am more interested in the reciprocating dingle arm than I am the turbo encabulator. You realize how bad sinosoidal deplaneration is in a transmission of one of those government sponsored windmills? It is terrible. Sometimes the head just comes apart because of it.

Wasn't there a comedienne, like Professor Backward or something, who had comedy routines based upon made up science-sounding terms?

I once gave a presentation to a bunch of pharmaceutical bigwigs at the launch of a new diuretic. I did the Foster Brooks routine introducing a new product to be sold for the folks using the new diuretic ... I revealed the innovative product at the end, peeled it and took a bit.

One of my favorite routines came to me in my sleep, giving a lecture on medical terminology which needs to be updated, to help patients know what's coming with their treatments and surgeries. Colonoscopy should be changed to 'bag-a-side-of-me', for instance; ooectomies should be 'ovaoutames', etc.
