We found out earlier this morning that Paul Ryan has changed his mind and will reluctantly support the upcoming budget deal even though “the process stinks.” Rand Paul wants nothing to do with it and wants to filibuster it in the Senate. But will it even get that far? We found out from the House Freedom Caucus earlier today that they will be opposing the scheme for a variety of reasons.
Washington, DC – The House Freedom Caucus issued the following statement related to the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015, H.R. 1314:
The latest budget deal continues the sad pattern of the past five years: a fiscal monstrosity gets negotiated in secret with Obama, Reid, and Pelosi; the American people and their representatives get shut out of the process; and the bill is rushed through the House on short notice and without proper scrutiny or the ability to offer amendments. This deal is an affront to open, accountable, and limited government. It plunges our nation into debt to the tune of nearly $20 trillion, busts the spending caps enacted by Congress just a few years ago, perpetuates our looming entitlement crisis by pilfering money from Social Security, and contains budget and accounting gimmicks that are manifestly fraudulent. The House Freedom Caucus strongly opposes this deal and will vote against it on the House floor.
Having this happen at the same moment that Ryan is negotiating the final vote to make him Speaker certainly doesn’t set an auspicious tone for the coming months. This deal, assuming it goes through as billed, not only raises the spending limits and increases the debt, but locks the GOP majority out of any additional leverage in negotiating a more prudent fiscal approach until after the next elections. It’s not hard to understand why Justin Amash was clearly a bit peeved when he got the word. (CNN)
Michigan Rep. Justin Amash, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, strongly objected to the deal.
“We’re not just here to take commands,” Amash said. “People back home expect us to participate in the process. I hope that Paul Ryan will let us know how he feels about the process.”
Ryan, who is the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, deliberately took a low profile and refused to weigh in on the deal, declining to comment to reporters and not saying a word about it during a private meeting with fellow House Republicans.
At that meeting, however, the tension was rife.
It’s still more than a year until the elections so I don’t understand why we aren’t taking a harder line on this. I understand that John Boehner is on his way out the door and feels like he has nothing to lose by ticking off the grassroots at this point. I can also see how he might think that he can spare Paul Ryan a lot of headaches by ramming this through on his final couple of days and let Ryan mouth some negative comments about it, but I’m guessing most of the Freedom Caucus has already seen through that play. I don’t know that the incoming Speaker (assuming that still happens) can get away with just saying, yeah, this stinks, but that’s how those guys always operate. It will be different when I’m in charge.
Of course, if we’ve given away enough to the Democrats to draw a significant number of votes I suppose it won’t matter. Obama signed off on the deal personally (which should tell you enough about it right there) so I doubt that too many of them will buck. This thing may already be a done deal, leaving the House leadership at odds with the more conservative members pretty much the same as it’s been for a couple of years now.
“HR1314:A Bill to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide for a right to an administrative appeal relating to adverse determinations of tax-exempt status of certain organizations.”
Is the vehicle for the RINO’s budget bill.
All language on the rights of the conservative groups abused by the IRS was removed and the Title kept as an arrogant insult to conservatives.
This so-called “House Freedom Caucus” group is giving every indication of being a judas goat for conservatives.
We’ll know soon enough when the votes for Son of Boehner are counted tomorrow. I expect they’ll be lining up to fawn over PR with the rest of them.
NOW is the time for all REAL Americans to put our 2nd Amendment FIRST!!
They know damn well that it will pass with overwhelming Dem support. Just gives them a chance to try to fool us again, with their "conservative bona fides."
House Freedom Cauc-less is nothing but just a bunch of RINOs hiding behind the conservative moniker...
CINOS....Hmm...
I was also listening to Rush and I agree. The GOPe would rather see Hillary President than Trump or Cruz. Because if either of them gets elected the RINO’s safe little world will change.
Another meaningless “show vote” as Ted Cruz described them the other week.
This is all part of a prearranged script designed to fool grassroots Americans.
Ryan speaks of the ‘wrong path’ being taken and a ‘new path’ beginning.
What garbage.
Boehner locked in the ‘wrong path’ on automatic with the budget-debt ceiling deal while Ryan can go on a pretend ‘new path’ through the election cycle in 2016.
Then the ‘wrong path’ will resume again in 2017.
The “House Freedom Caucus” was there to pretend to challenge Ryan, then report most of its members supported him after Ryan convinced them how good he was.
IT WAS ALL FOR SHOW AND THEY ARE PRETENDERS.
My congressman, Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, is part of this “House Freedom Caucus” show. Perry voted for Boehner for Speaker twice and had Boehner in the district for a fundraiser in 2013.
He’s showboating for us folks back here and said he would support Ryan last week after Ryan’s meeting with the HFC last week.
Rand Paul On Shutdown: "Even Though It Appeared I Was Participating In It, It Was A Dumb Idea"I said throughout the whole battle that shutting down the government was a dumb idea. Even though it did appear as if I was participating in it, I said it was a dumb idea. And the reason I voted for it, though, is that it's a conundrum. Here's the conundrum. We have a $17 trillion debt and people at home tell me you can't give the president a blank check. We just can't keep raising the debt ceiling without conditions. So unconditionally raising the debt ceiling, nobody at home wants me to vote for that and I can't vote for that. But the conundrum is if I don't we do approach these deadlines. So there is an impasse. In 2011, though, we had this impasse and the president did negotiate. We got the sequester. If we were to extend the sequester from discretionary spending to all the entitlements we would actually fix our problem within a few years.[Posted on 11/19/2013 12:16:51 PM by Third Person]
The ‘pretenders’ are the ones who pretend 40 congressmen can control the Chamber. That’s insane.
The HFC could, and did, topple Boehner.
At one time they would have been celebrated for that.
No denying the RINOs ran the table this week though.
Got everything they wanted and we got nothing.
Man, the rino GOP represents the liberal democrats and no conservatives any more. They are so ignorant and arrogant and proud and mock at the conservatives of America. I do so despise their evil ways and their collaboration with the obamanation of America’s desolation.
From my readings I figured out that The Tea Party Caucus set up in 2010 by Jim DeMint and Michele Bachmann disbanded abruptly in 2013. This new group was another attempt at creating a Caucua for conservatives. Tim Huelskamp has some role as he is a spokesperson for The Freedom Caucus. They formed in January. Unlike the Tea Party Caucus, The House Freedom Caucus seems to be infected with Republican Study Committee Members. The Tea Party Caucus for all practical purposes changed names or as one site said it was reconstituted into The Freedom Caucus. Tim Huleskamp of Kansas was also chair of the Tea Party Caucus.
The interesting thing is the changes in members between The Tea Party Caucus and Freedom Caucus. Some people dropped off or quit after a few meetings. The Senate took up a Tea Party Caucus version of their own.
Jim Demint founded the Senate version and Michele Bachmann the House version of the original Tea Party Caucus. But the idea was loosely based on Rand Paul’s comments. However Rand nor his father, when he was in congress, joined. Ron Paul tried a Liberty Caucus but later quit the group.
Two of the the most conservative members to not join The Freedom Caucus that were a big part of The Tea Party Caucus are Louie Gohmert of Texas and Steve King Of Iowa. But the have Dave Brat of Virginia and Mark Meadows of North Carolina. Justin Amash of Michigan was part of The Liberty Caucus and he moved to The Freedom Caucus, but never was with The Tea Party Caucus. He had fundamental differences with Michele Bachmann and Steve King. Tom McClintock of California and Reid Ribble of Wisconsin quit The Freedom Caucus last month.
I think The Freedom Caucus sold out and is not the same as two years when it stopped meeting or disbanded under The Tea Party Caucus name. They are a joke.
Is that like Bush’s “I had to void the Const. to support the Const.”, Mr. POS Ryan?
The process sucks SO bad, so I voted for it anyway. How much have you READ of the bill? Where’s the public notice/input/3-day waiting period?
The man, whose idea of his job as a congressman, is to be in the shoes of IMMIGRANTS, not the Citizens he’s elected to represent
A man so $$ savvy, it took 10+ years to balance a ‘budget’ (usually, in the last 3-5 yrs.)
Dear WSJ Editors:
Obama’s full budget was passed by all House Democrats, supported by just enough of the Republican “Leadership” including Ryan and Boehner, with the approval of Paul Gigot’s Wall Street Journal Editorial Page, and in spite of the opposition of the vast majority of the Republican caucus and every conservative of note.
Nobody has credibly claimed that conservatism won anything, so this is not compromise. Republican “Leadership” did not complain that they were forced, so this is not even capitulation.
The masks are off at the Halloween Ball, and approving all of Obama’s budget demonstrates that Obama, Boehner, Ryan and Gigot are all leaders of the pro-government liberal Uniparty.
Thanks for info.
