Regarding Google's malware database and malware warnings on FR
October 27, 2015 | Jim Robinson

Posted on 10/27/2015 5:21:09 PM PDT by Jim Robinson

Basically, it's full of crap. Apparently, they have two issues with FR. One is that a user (a long-time user not a hacker) posted a link to an image that (unknown to him) resides on a site google has registered in their database as a malware site. We've pulled the post and notified google. Have no idea when they'll stop flagging us.

The other is that we have links to aim.org. NSS. Aim is a conservative site. Have no idea how many, but I'm sure we've had hundreds or even thousands of links posted to aim.org. We're not going to pull them.

Why google is apparently randomly flagging unrelated threads on FR I have no idea. Your guess is good as mine.

But it's not just google Chrome. Any browser that relies on google's database is doing this.

If you want to stop these erroneous and obnoxious warning messages immediately, you can set a browser option to ignore such warnings. Your virus protection software will catch any real viruses.

Thank you all very much for notifying me. I've received dozens and dozens of these already. Sorry, cannot answer each one individually.

If you use multiple browers on Windows, adding the site to your hosts file seems to help as well.

Just happened to me for the first time right now on another thread. Using Pale Moon, but it also happened on Opera and FireFox.

Ten years ago when I last worked for the feral gummint Barracuda would not let me open FreeRepublic labeling it “criminal conspiracy”. That was when “W” was in office!

I think our guesses about Google vs. FR are probably closer to the mark.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

“Did someone leave the Italians on?”

Ha - those were the days - eh?

Of course most of the “youngsters” around here will scratch their heads wondering why “all your Italians are belong to us” would be even remotely funny...

I am experiencing this problem for the first time this morning. I have an older Mac running either Safari 5.0.6 or Firefox 3.6.28. For now I am simply selecting the ignore warning button on Safari. The choice to ignore the warning on Firefox seems to be disabled.

My work server used US DofD listing of forbidden sites. FR was listed as an anti-Semitic hate group. I bitched and moaned so hard (and being both Jewish and Isararli) they realized it was nonsense. Pushing political agenda is Google’s goal.

Department of Defense sees us as anti-Semitic? That's what you're saying?

re: Easy solution. Uncheck the “Protect you and your device from malicious websites" box, use another browser, don't use google . . . .

Fine except for any of the billion or so Internet users who happen to run across www.freerepublic.com and now associate it with "danger."

As long as StopBadware Clearinghouse, Google, ThreatTrack Security, NSFocus, etc. make it easy as I understand it to

Report Badware

If you have encountered a badware URL, you can report it to StopBadware's community. StopBadware does NOT curate [oversee] or maintain a list of bad sites, and reporting a URL via this form does NOT mean the URL will be added to a list of bad sites maintained by any other company. A community report is merely a record that an Internet user believes badware was present on a given URL at a given time. This form is open to all who wish to use it, regardless of technical skill level.

Community reports will be included in our Badware Website Clearinghouse. They may be shared with third parties or used in a variety of other ways to help fight badware . . . .

“The Left’s War on Comment Sections”

“...Another study found that reading assertive, aggressive comments could actually sway the opinions of readers. “Don’t read the comments,” warned Ars Technica, “they can make you mistrust real experts.”

It’s a piece of advice that captures the war on comments sections perfectly. Having initially cheered on the death of the “gatekeepers of information,” cultural elites are now scrambling to reinstall those barriers. Too late, they have discovered that people don’t always agree with them – and now they want to push that disagreement into the wilderness of the internet...”

There is also an issue with the results from Google's search engine. See this screenshot, I'm sure you'll see the issue immediately. I was discussing this with another user who wasn't having the problem. Still don't understand why I have the problem, and he doesn't. Screenshot is from about 3 weeks ago.

I’d love to turn the malware detect off but I’m using a work computer. So, I’ll just live with it for now.

Are these attacks on Free Republic obtained via StopBadware.org and is that were google is getting alerted to add warning to FR links?

StopBadware Clearinghouse search results listed above indicate that data provided to StopBadware is why Free Republic is being blacklisted.

What are StopBadware’s data sources?

[My emphasis]

Regardless who my question is why threads that have been safe and static for months (years?) are now listed as caches of malware?

I do not care that I personally can simply turn off the warning.

I am more concerned about the impact on FR.
