Police chiefs from across the United States called on Monday for universal background checks for firearms purchases, saying opinion polls consistently show that most Americans support such restrictions.

The proliferation of firearms is one of the factors behind a rise in homicide rates in many U.S. cities this year, according to senior law enforcement officials at the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Chicago. …

Easily done...IF....these US police chiefs can name which legal gun sales are not subject to a background check.

I live in MA and you can't get around it here. Last time I checked, a purchase from a licensed dealer requires shipment of item(s) to a FFL holder. Private sales? How will they regulate those? What criminals are going to obey any laws created?

These lazy-arse donut munchers should do their jobs and go after the ones doing the killing. And they know who those "people" are already.

The only way this would work is by creating a massive database of gun ownership, which, of course is a set up for confiscation.

Democrats are very transparent.

If that flies, why not a poll tax and a voter test?

While they’re at it, they should make drugs illegal too.
Oh, wait...

Why not just stop all gangbanger gun transactions?

Gun control laws are ONLY for the law biding... Criminals will ignore background check laws just like they ignore all the other laws. Face it, criminals steal guns when they break into YOUR home - then sell them to fellow criminals.

Background checks are a joke.

Police Chiefs know the truth... but stupid laws like this make their liberal mayors feel like they're 'doing something - anything'... That said, I know your comments were tongue in cheek Paladin... you know the score.

There’s an interesting slight-of-hand going on here.

The pollsters ask people if the support extending background checks to private sales. The majority says yes.

Then the politicians introduce bills that outlaw private transfers.

Right...and it wouldn't have anything to do with culture.

Consider that repeating firearms have been around for 160 years or so.

While the culture has degenerated over the past 20...

What does that tell you?

The proliferation of generational welfare and fatherless homes in certain ethnic communities is one of the factors behind the rise in homicide rates.

Fixed

Good idea. Most of them seem to be fat cats that are just sitting around coming up with stupid ideas until they can collect a retirement check.

You have to have a background check in Colorado to even move a gun. In case of fire or flood the Sheriff can not help a person move his guns to safety according to our mentally ill legislatures. One of our law gives was so dumb that she thought when you shot all the rounds out of a magazine it was no longer any good.

...senior law enforcement officials at the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Chicago...

They don't really have any sense of irony, do they? What was the count on deaths and shootings in Chicago, that shining beacon of common sense on guns, last weekend and this year?

according to senior law enforcement officials at the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Chicago.

One only needs to look at Chicago to see how progressive gun control laws have worked.

International Association of Chiefs of Police
”International” not just American. This includes Chiefs from countries with draconian gun laws. Even most American Chiefs of Police are political appointees.

The proliferation theft of firearms is one of the factors behind a rise in homicide rates

Not the purchases made by law abiding American Citizens.
