Ben Carson has edged out fellow GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump in a new national poll, taking the top spot from the real estate mogul for the first time in months.
Carson is supported by 26 percent of GOP primary voters, followed by Trump at 22 percent, according to the CBS News/New York Times poll released early Tuesday. All other candidates follow in the single digits, with Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) at 8 percent and businesswoman Carly Fiorina and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at 7 percent each.
The poll represents growing momentum for Carson, who surpassed Trump in several polls in the early voting state of Iowa over the past week ahead of the next GOP debate on Wednesday.
"Ben Carson is now doing well," Trump acknowledged on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" after the poll came out, adding that he believed Carson would see more scrutiny as a front-runner.

Look folks.....the Republican POTUS nomination is now down to four possibles, Donald Trump, Ben Carson, Ted Cruz & Marco Rubio. The rest of the field is toast and, they should drop out & save their dignity and characteri Blieve at the end of the day...the ticket will be Donald Trump, POTUS, Ted Cruz, VP or possibly, Donald Trump POTUS, Ben Carson, VP....both great tickets!!!
The Carson flash againt Trump is passing, just like the Carly Fiorina flare was passing!!! Ben Carson is a fantastic person, but, he is not yet ready to become POTUS, although after eight years of Trump & him, he will be right on target to become POTUS!!! Let the games go on....but, let’s get the field down to realistic and real size!!!
“When Carson makes campaign appearances”
Maybe you didn’t hear. Carson suspended his campaign and is going on a book tour:
CBS polls don’t have a very good track record. I’d stick with Ipsos Reuters and Morning Consult.
“it is unwise to overlook the fact that Dr Ben has the finest intellect and control of the language of any candidate in modern memory”
Why is that only evident to you?
A few days ago, Iowans were called “morons” and “genetically modified” (a la corn) because polls in that state were showing Carson overtaking Trump.
Given this latest poll, I guess the ENTIRE country is now mentally challenged. Iowans can take some consolation in that. /s
Creating the narrative.
because I have actually heard him and seen him in the flesh and most here pick up on the Free Republic doctrine de jour actually knowing little or nothing
Which style do you think would be better sitting across the table from Vladimir Putin or any other world leader?
Trump, Carson lead GOP in Iowa; Trump keeps big lead in NH, SC
The Republican nomination fight continues to be dominated by political newcomers
Donald Trump and Ben Carson. In Iowa, Carson has moved up to tie Trump.
In South Carolina and New Hampshire, there is Donald Trump with a large lead,
and then there is everyone else.
Iowa
Trump - -27%
Carson - -27%
NH
Trump - 38%
Carson -12%
SC
Trump - 40%
Carson -23%
There is definitely movement towards Carson. Morning Consult picked it up.
This poll is useless because with a margin of error of 6 points they can’t say who is ahead. Useless.
Dr. Ben would be a great Surgeon General or DHS secretary.
He would be an asset to any administration. But these polls are just another last gasp by the ruling class (on both) sides that must stop anyone who remotely threatens their plans.
You think the “bacon is bad” and the full court press on globull climate whatever in the same week of the debate is a coincidence? If so I have some pristine real estate deals for you all in Aleppo Syria.
Remember folks; these one-worlders will not go quietly....they are the same forces who want to regulate the internet and lay waste to the 2nd amendment and any other rights that may promote or defend freedom.
THEY WILL STOP AT NOTHING. And rigging polls is as easy as crossing our border and going on welfare.
jmho
Every criteria you mentioned has been the norm in dozens of polls in the past month which showed Trump leading, often by large margins.
Why were those polls legit, while this one is not?
You live by the polls, you die by the polls. You don’t pick a poll here or there which you like. Look at trends over weeks or months. The current trend is that Carson is moving up and Trump is either stationary or moving down.
Question is why? My opinion is that when Walker dropped out, Carson picked up his supporters. Also Trump’s 9/11 gaffes might have cost him some lukewarm supporters.
It’s unwise to get so emotionally attached and so invested in a candidate that you are blinded to the truth.
One thing is certain, when Carson "leads" anywhere, he is going to start to draw fire like he cannot imagine---the kind of fire Trump has sustained for five months.
It's very simple.
Polls that show results you like are accurate, and polls that don't are garbage.
What seems to be happening is that fewer people overall are expressing a preference, period. I haven't totaled the numbers, but it would be interesting to see if all the percentages add up.
That is another issue. To sit across from Vlad, he needs to win the US election first.
Hillary would maul Carson.
Not so.
Trump polls have had upwards of 2000 respondents. I follow this stuff.
Some were smaller, and I called them.
It remains a fact: this is an unprofessional poll.
Sorry. Carson would get trounced worse than Mitt. I can’t explain his appeal, but I do know that his positions are far to the left of Trump’s, yet his energy is far to the south of Trump’s.
No. It’s a legit poll. I am a Trumpster and don’t discount any polls. This is a very big sample. And no, Cruz is not doing well anywhere. One or two polls have him at 10%, most places he is >8% and several below 5%. Cruzers need to face facts there.
That isn't even close to happening.
I'm not concerned about Trump and Carson exchanging leads (though I'm very suspicious of these recent polls as Carson has not been very active) because these are both non-politicians and a year ago, it would have been inconceivable that these two would be the front runners at this stage in the race. Actually, it's pretty incredible.
It wouldn't break my heart if Cruz was to suddenly take the lead but the fact that the other establishment politicians are way, way behind are encouraging to me. Regardless of whether it is Trump or Carson that are on top.
