POLLS - 2016 Republican Presidential Nomination (Vanity)

No text from article.

Carson is just 2.5 points behind Trump in the overall polling - why? Carson is doing something right even in light of Trump being in the headlines the most, almost 2 to 1 over Carson.

Who are the people that are following him? Secular Conservatives? Christian conservatives? Liberal RINO's? Libertarians?

What has he been doing to get such a following?

If you believe Trump will be the nominee because of the polls, you have got to believe that Carson is a threat to Trumps achievement.

I have an idea why he is high in the polls but I bow to the superior wisdom (and snarc) of my fellow Freepers (though I will just laugh at the snarc and not take it seriously).

People believe what they want to believe about the polls. Unfortunately polls are all about manipulating the public in whatever direction the pollsters choose.

In a world full of insincere and unlikable characters, Carson is a likable guy.

At this point, that is all that matters.

It might be different in March.

Not a Carson guy myself, but if I had to theorize - it would be several factors.

A: Race - the ability to attract at least some of the black vote.
B: Tone - different strokes for different folks...and some will prefer the quiet understated style of Carson’s over Trump.
C: Probably a conservative much longer than Trump.
D: Some were early to the draft Carson mindset - which started well before Trump - and those early adapters will not change easily.
E: Faith: there will be some who do not have faith in DT’s faith, but do in Carson’s.

Like I said....I don’t support either - though I’ll vote for either over any Democrat and over several Republicans....but I think this explains his support.

Elderly people that are home to take these surveys trust their doctors. Dr. Carson has gained their trust because of his profession. Do I think it’s this close? No way.

I think it all started when he said he would not support a Muslim in the White House, and then doubled down on it when everyone came screaming and yelling that he can’t say that!

What has he been doing to get such a following?

(1) GOPe pushing anyone but Trump. (2) Liberal media creation.

He really hasn’t done or said much to merit much support.

I concur with your five thoughts on why Carson is polling close to Trump.

However, these are national polls and I believe Carson polls better in the blue states against Trump than he does Red.states. Look at individual state polls from Red, Purple, and Blue states and One can see this is generally true. Is it possible Carson could win a couple of purple states than Trump could not? Possibly. My fear is than Carson could not get the base fired up and to the polls the way Trump can and many would just stay home in the presidential election.

Actually Carson’s upward spike is all based on a single poll. I would not get too excited about that until you see it reflected in 4-5 other polls.

You can laugh all you want. We will laugh more.

I think his most recent uptick in the polls is because he, in his more gentle manner, is standing up to political correctness, including the media.

People are so sick and tired of the media owning the rhetoric. Anyone who stands up to them, and the way they tell us we’re supposed to think, is exhibiting strength and leadership.

No. He really hasn’t. Other than a few comments on muzzies, he really hasn’t.

You’re welcome to list some of the reasons I should vote for him.

I don’t even bother with most polls anymore.

FR polls are good because everybody can vote once and everybody can see who is voting. If anyone were caught with multiple accounts they would get a zot.

A: Race - I believe Trump would attract more black votes.
B: Tone - He is a likeable guy.
C: Not sure. He just registered as a republican less than a year ago. I am more concerned which will get the economy out of the dumps.
D: Agree.
E: Faith: Agree on this too.

Overall, it was Trump that was out front on immigration. Others were just floating trial balloons. Trump is also out front on taxes and economic issues. The others are waiting to see which way the wind blows.
