In unmistakable ways over the last two weeks, whether he has intended to or not, Donald J. Trump has started to articulate a way out of the presidential race: a verbal parachute that makes clear he has contemplated the factors that would cause him to end his bid.
It is a prospect that many in the political establishment have privately predicted as the actual voting grows closer.
In three separate television interviews, Mr. Trump, who has made his standing in the polls a central facet of his campaign message, spoke about what would prompt him to quit a race in which he is currently leading in the polls.
Im not a masochist, Mr. Trump told Chuck Todd, the host of Meet the Press on NBC News, last weekend. If I were doing poorly, if I saw myself going down, if you would stop calling me because you no longer have any interest in Trump because he has no chance, Id go back to my business.
It was similar to what he said in an interview with the Today show a few days earlier, and at another point to 60 Minutes on CBS.
In interviews this week, Mr. Trump insisted he was in the race to win, and took aim at troublemakers in the media who, he said, are misrepresenting his remarks. Im never getting out, he insisted Friday on MSNBC.
Mr. Trump keeps noting that he still leads in every major Republican poll and is in a political position that others would envy, and he says he will spend the money to keep his candidacy alive. But he conceded ...

Yes it’s very unfortunate we start league play in blue stadiums.
“Above my paygrade.” LOL
Whoever asked Trump that question originally put the dynamite in place, and now all the others are trying to light the fuse. They are like a bunch of five-year-olds ganging up on Godzilla.
Smell the fear...
Said in voice of Janis from Friends: “Ohh Muy Gawwww!!”
The oligarchy is so desperate they are still working the Oz screen even though the curtain is pulled and we can all see the little men sweatily working behind the scenes.
but it’s great FUN for us, and we usually dont get to have any fun watching the media :)
they are buying bismol by the gallons :)
We can all dream....but no, Trump is staying...he does what he says....
AMERICAN HOSTAGES FREED!!!
no its not 1979, It B. Obama’s2015.....
Trumpy!
The two-headed oligarchy already voided their agreement with Trump so he is free to run third party. The GOP is most def not supporting him as they promised.
That's why Trump can win, and it's why Cruz can't.
Just ask yourself. Why would a guy who is overwhelmingly winning have an exit strategy?
Only a moron could believe crap like this!
Right? There could be a video of Hillary with the “good Muslim friends taking Ambassador Stevens to get medical care” raping him with objects in the streets of Benghazi, and the NYT would never run a headline about Hillary’s exit from the race.
NYT philosophy. If you say it enough times, people will think it’s true.
Maggie used to be an honest reporter (yes really) but now she has been forced to enter the Wile E. Coyote Frustration Ward contest. By the way Maggie the latest polls have Trump at 37% Reuters Ipsos, 31% Morning Consult (Carson 2nd with 13!) and a New Jersey college poll with Trump up 26 - 22. Exit Strategy Maggie Ha ha ha!
The press has a mantra every week that all the magpies repeat without critical comment. The week before, it was what a clown Trump was. Last week, it was Trump’s fall in the polls. This week, its the pending Trump exit from the race. Next week?
Every day seems like an eternity, during an American Presidential election — however, it only seems like a couple of weeks ago, when pundits were accusing Trump of planning to run as an independent, if he didn’t win the primaries. IOW, he was going to stay in the race, beyond the bitter end. Now, he’s being accused of intending to bail at the earliest opportunity.
Can there be any easier way to make money, than writing such speculative columns? No facts, analytical skills, writing skills, insider knowledge, or consistency required — and zero accountability to boot!
Weird how there's no mention of the fact that he was asked about quitting the race every time he spoke about it.
If Trump said he’d leave the contest when hell froze over, these chaps would promptly send every meteorologist they could muster to Hades.
Of course, the media twisted it to make it seem like that if Trump went down in the polls by any amount, he would drop out.
Pink Panty, hand wringers hoping.
