In a conversation with Business Insider promoting his new book, presidential candidate Ben Carson suggested creating a national database to keep "dangerous individuals" from accessing guns. In the aftermath of the mass shooting in Roseburg, Oregon, Carson wants to stop unstable people from slipping through state systems which are under no federal mandate to share information.

Yet, these very same people publicly accuse others of being mentally ill based on such habits as pursuing productive occupations, paying their bills, and living like responsible adults.
No thanks, Dr. Carson.
There are probably some psychological signs that, if recognized and addressed, could mitigate occasions where people have gone off the deep end with their firearm and have killed innocent people. I suspect we would discover it is liberal ideas that most often drive people over the edge. That said, the right to bear arms is clearly and plainly stated in the Constitution as a right that SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. What part of this language do our overseers not understand?
I think it would be abused by all.
As a doctor and a scientist I would have thought Carson would have thought this through logically.
There is no criteria and no way to determine who is mentally unstable, especially if they are not in any kind of treatment plan and then again everyone in some kind of therapy is not mentally unstable to that point.
You talk about a real Slippery Slope to go down.
I agree - not a good idea.
Just as the DHS was converted from identifying and stopping real terrorist threats
to identifying and stopping conservatives,
so would such a “database” be corrupted when the left took over.
Sounds like the beginning of the establishment of the Department of Pre-Crime.

Then, who becomes the pre-criminal? What are the pre-conditions for determining who might commit crimes?
This would be fodder for control-freak politicians in the near future.

Seems like the good Doctor is adopting some of Hillary’s methods — ‘magic-wand-ism’. Just wave a magic wand and the problems are resolved.
Supposedly, the killer from Oregon was taking a number of meds for mental illness that can cause violent behavior. Currently in Wisconsin, there are laws that mandate that if you are a schizophrenic or have other mental illnesses, you are reported to a database that prohibits you from being able to purchase a gun. I’m fine with that law, it just isn’t enforced.
This is not so much different from Obama Admin wanting to classify many elderly as mentally disabled, if they take certain meds, to bar them from gun ownership.

Of course, Carson will be walking this back as soon as this firestorm hits him in the face.

The Libs already have at least a partial list of potential terrorists....the rolls of Military Veterans. Nasty Palousey and her friends consider our returning veterans terrorists.
purposed?
Proposed might make a bit more sense. Eh?
I wanted to like Carson, but I keep hearing him say stuff like this. This ‘database’ can- and would- be turned into a political weapon in nothing, flat.
Does he want that? Did he not realize that? Did he not think this through?
I don’t want any of the above in the Executive billet.
If they actually did that, I guess I’m gonna have to switch to the GOA.
I have to admit, the NRA has had more than its share of stupid ideas in an attempt to seem ‘reasonable.’
Prior to the 1963 Community Mental Health law that took effect, these diagnosed individuals would be institutionalized for their sake AND to protect a civil society. There was a huge mistake made that got the 1963 law passed that released 10’s of thousands of mental patients on to the streets and closed the institutions. The mistake was that the new drugs would fix the patients.
Any liberal is dangerous.
I was in a mass shooting, and I would disagree.
I wirked at ESL when Richard Farley killed 7 of my co-workers.
He planned it. He rented an RV, filled it with ammunition and guns, and then drove to ESL and murdered my co-workers.
He was cold and cruel and I can’t imagine too many people doing that.
By the way, he had a top secret clearande when he worked for ESL. So a background check would not have prevented him from doing anything.
He was supposed to go to court that day to get a restraining order on him. Maybe somehow there could be a way of temporarily flagging someone because he had been fired from work and was following Laura Black. People knew he was crazy by then, but he was still able to purchase an RV full of guns and ammo
I don’t think that’s it. It would not have deterred Richard Farley. He just wanted to get back at Laura Black for refusing his affection. Then he wanted to get back at his boss for firing him.
These people are sick.
Sounds suspiciously like a Department of Pre-Crime to me. Not his best idea, to say the least.
Well this bounces Carson off the list for me. A “national list?”
No doubt collected and maintained by yet another huge politically infested bureaucratic waste site and black hole into which our tax dollars will go to abuse individuals on whichever side runs afoul of the current political climate. That goes for both sides, Rep or Dem.
As much as Dr. Carson impresses with his knowledge of neurology, I am not much impressed with the rather puerile approach to a very slippery slope.
