U.S. officials have begun to reveal the kinds of military equipment Russia has been moving into Syria, leaving little doubt that they are establishing an air base in the war-ravaged country.
Moscow’s movements have been closely watched by the international community over the last few weeks, as observers debate whether the rapid buildup of weapons, troops and supplies near the Syrian coastal city of Latakia is presumably meant to aid diplomacy that will end the years-long civil war or to prop up the regime of embattled President Bahar al-Assad.
Asked if the White House has gleaned Russia’s intent with the rapid military expansion, press secretary Josh Earnest pleaded ignorance.
Earnest stressed that the Obama administration has “been engaged in conversations with the Russians to get a better sense about what their intentions and goals are. And we've made clear both in public and in private that doubling down on supporting Assad is a losing bet.”

Russia will built a significant Middle East forward operating base, inclusive of a warm port for the first time in history. Assad is in deep trouble and will basically promise Russia whatever they want to assist in propping him up.
Russia will get all it wants and will become a major power in the Middle East all a result of the weakness and power vacuum left by the feckless Obama administration.
Russia is walking all over Obama and will develop a significant military presence, with significant hard assets, in the Middle East.
In my opinion, this is going to change many equations and perhaps the balance of power for many decades to come.
The White House should consult with FreeRepublic so they can figure out what is going on.
Hopefully if he does call Bibi, he will tell Obozo to piss off.

obama’s ineptness, anti-Americanism, stupidity, lack like no other person in history... has allowed the world to be turned inside out.
This so called man is such a disgrace. There is NO defense for him.... he’s been a one person wrecking ball on this country and the world.
God may have used him (like He used Judas) for end times purposes. What obama has done in 7 years, I would not have believed could happen.
And the Current Regime is “mystified” about what Putin is doing.
Putin is rushing to the rescue of the Syrian Christians and Yazidis, both of whom are getting very short shrift in the attempts to flee from Syria and ISIS. Almost all the “Syrian” refugees now entering Europe are Muslim, both ISIS infiltrators and persons genuinely fleeing the war, but only to find the war has pursued them. Any Christians or Yazidis attempting to flee with them wind up being dumped in the Mediterranean or murdered in their sleep while resting from their journey.

In a phone interview with CNN Tuesday evening, Trump claimed that there’s “something in the Iran deal” that “people don’t understand” saying if someone attacks Iran, “we have to come to their defense.”
“Does that include Israel?” Trump asked. “And most people say yes, they don’t have an exclusion for Israel. So if Israel attacks Iran, according to that deal, I believe, the way it reads, unless they have a codicil or they have something to it, that we have to fight with Iran against Israel.” ..."
Trump was most probably referring to language highlighted by the opponents of the deal. On page 142, the deal includes a clause that states, “Co-operation through training and workshops to strengthen Iran’s ability to protect against, and respond to nuclear security threats, including sabotage, as well as to enable effective and sustainable nuclear security and physical protection systems.”
Washington-based Center for Security Policy asserted that Annex III appears “to commit the United States and other world powers to the defense of Iran’s nuclear program.”
Moscow will reportedly provide Russian troops in Syria with an advanced antiaircraft missile system as part of its military support for Syrian president Bashar Assad.
"This system is the advanced version used by Russia, and it's meant to be operated by Russians in Syria," a Western diplomat who is regularly briefed on US, Israeli, and other intelligence assessments told Reuters.
And as The Daily Beast's Michael Weiss points out, any antiaircraft missiles deployed by Russian troops in Syria won't be directed at ISIS, since ISIS has no air force.
In fact, none of the rebels do — only government forces have access to aircraft.
Russia has substantially increased its military presence in Syria over the past two weeks under the guise of helping the embattled Assad fight ISIS and other extremists. ..."

“Even if Russians operated the [anti-aircraft] missiles and kept them out of the hands of the Syrian army, the arrival of such an advanced anti-aircraft system could also unsettle Israel, which in the past has bombed sophisticated arms it suspected were being handed to Assad’s Lebanese guerrilla allies, Hezbollah.
“In the Middle East you never know what will happen. If the Russians end up handing it (SA-22) over to the Syrian military I don’t think the Israelis would intervene but they would go bananas if they see it heading towards Hezbollah in Lebanon,” the diplomatic source said.
An Israeli military spokesman declined to comment on the missile system. A senior Israeli defense official briefing reporters on Thursday said Israel was in contact with Moscow and would continue its policy of stopping advanced weapons reaching Hezbollah.
“We have open relations with the Russians who have come to save Assad in the civil war. Along with this, we will not allow our sovereignty to be compromised or the transfer of advanced or chemical weapons (to Hezbollah). We are following the developments and keeping open channels with Moscow.” “
