WASHINGTON Anyone in America can grow up to be president, as the saying goes, unless you happen to be a Muslim, so a leading Republican presidential candidate believes, possibly one more self-inflicted dent in the party's professed commitment to broaden its appeal and promote tolerance.
"I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation," retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson said in an interview aired Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press." ''I absolutely would not agree with that."
For GOP leaders, the 2016 campaign offered a chance at redemption and fresh pitch to minorities, gays, women and others beyond the traditional core supporters.
After a blistering examination of the 2012 election, a report commissioned by Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus concluded that "if our party is not welcoming and inclusive, young people and increasingly other voters will continue to tune us out."
But it hasn't unfolded according to the hierarchy's hoped-for script, with some high-profile candidates inviting lots of eyebrow-raising. Just in the past few days, their comments have underscored that the problems extend beyond the GOP's well-documented troubles appealing to Hispanics.
To be sure, candidates Jeb Bush and others have disavowed some of that rhetoric or tried to stake out more moderate positions. It can be tough, though, to avoid getting drowned out by language sure to stir up people.
Front-runner Donald Trump declined to correct a town hall participant who wrongly said President Barack Obama was a Muslim. Days later, Carson spoke about Muslims and the presidency remarks described as "un-American," by a spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Ibrahim Hooper. Hooper said the Constitution expressly bars religious tests for those seeking public office.

Moslems, and the folks who insist that the should be “tolerated” (coddled, protected, etc.) are not going to vote ‘Pubbie anyway.

Yup...I already see his words remain the same but he’s not talking as much about himself and his delivery is smoother.
The masses will take notice.
Love the sinner, hate the sin. Islamic doctrine is seditious to the U S Constitution. Individual Muzzies could be redeemed. Carson has it correct. The GOPee, not so much.
H-> is tight with the Muzzie Broz, as evidenced by the long term Huma relationship and former Joo Bast@rd comments.
I’m not a Carson fan, but he hit this one on the nose.
Right!
Maybe by tomorrow the nothing story on Trump and the muslim question will have died down and Bloody Megyn will attack Ben Carson like the raving lunatic she is. Just kidding, hell would freeze over first. She might mention it but you can bet your bottom dollar they could care less what Ben Carson says. The story tomorrow on Fox will be the new CNN poll on each and every Fox newscast and thrown in for good measure Kelly will say how awful it is Trump does not apologize to the Muslim in Chief.
Today on Fox News with Chris Wallace the RINO establishment blowhards said Trump is finished as a serious candidate and Carly Fiorina finished him. Once again Porky Pig Rove let everyone knew Trump was only the “flower of the month” and reminded everyone that four years ago at this time Rick Perry was leading. One of the blowhards said “no outsider, most certainly Trump”, has a chance at getting the nomination, and chuckling he said “the GOP does this every four years, they let the outsiders lead this thing for a few months and then the serious candidates always take over and of course his “serious” candidates are Bush, Kasich, and maybe Rubio. So long Donald, we hardly knew yee. Fox News, aka, the RINO Network has spoken. You might as well end your campaign tomorrow because Karl Rove says you’re finished.
Yes, indeed!
Plus, I love the reaction from the PC crowd...LOL.
“Trump is right, Carson is right and on this hill we should make our stand”.
Carson is not Trump and this afternoon or tomorrow Carson will apologize for “offending” any muslims that were hurt by his “disrespectful” comments. By the way he was wrong, America has already elected a muslim as president and he’s sitting in the White House.
Yes me too. Oh the vapors...
No, that actually makes Carson a little more appealing. I like him as a person, but he’s too weak to be a candidate...however, this might keep him on track for a cabinet position under Fiorina or Cruz.
Word to the GOP: we’ve already tuned-out
The thing is, the candidate would have to come out and state that he or she is a muslim, rather than lying about it go get votes.
I can’t see how a muslim can be prevented from running for the presidency, but sure as shootin’ I would HOPE Americans wouldn’t put one in office, knowingly.
Just speak the truth.
Few, if any, Muslims, Illegal Aliens, Militant Homosexuals, Sexual Deviates, and Blacks who want more government freebies would support republicans or conservatives so why worry about what they think?
Sure...And then you will be known as GOPe...Or Liberal Light...
"To me this really means he is not qualified to be president of the United States," Hooper said. "You cannot hold these kinds of views and at the same time say you will represent all Americans, of all faiths and backgrounds."
And what a shame...I'll bet Hooper was going to vote for Ben before that...
Widening the appeal? Do these people realize that Shias could care less about widening appeal to Suni?
Tolerance and the PC politicians are what got us into this mess. Look at the current occupant of 1600 Penn ave. Not once has HE denied being a muzzie. Others have made his denial, but never directly from his mouth.
Actually, Carson is right. Islam is a political movement, not religious. It is incompatible with democracy.
“the party’s professed commitment to broaden its appeal and promote tolerance” is exactly why it is losing elections.
Homosexuals at CPAC, candidates speaking Spanish, support for muslims....why would anyone want to work to help these clowns?
