The first major national poll since the second GOP debate finds Carly Fiorina surging into a second place and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walkers campaign in total collapse.
The survey by CNN of 444 registered Republican voters put Donald Trump in first place with 24% support, a drop of 8 points since their last poll, and Fiorina in second place with 15%. Fiorina earned plaudits on the right for her debate performance, which included multiple clashes with Trump, although fact checkers pointed out that she vividly cited footage from a hidden camera video of Planned Parenthood that does not appear to exist. 52% of respondents said Fiorina was the winner of the debate while 31% said Trump lost.
Dr. Ben Carson, who had surged into second place in many polls after the first debate in August, stood in third at 14%. Sen. Marco Rubio leapt from single digits to fourth place with 11% of the vote, followed by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at 9%, Sen. Ted Cruz and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee at 6%, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul at 4%, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at 3%, Ohio Gov. John Kasich at 2%, and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum at 1%.
Missing from the list was Walker, who earned less than half a percentage point support, putting the former frontrunner in the same category as long shots like Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, and former New York Gov. George Pataki.
Walker started the race strong early this year and regularly led polls of Iowa through July, where hes still hoping to jumpstart a comeback with a strong performance in the states caucuses. A combination of

“At least until the Dalmatians - Fur Coat - Cruella DeVille jokes get going.”
We need a pic of the Disney cartoon Cruella DeVille with Fiorina’s face photoshopped on. She could be wearing a partially complete coat, with some dead, skinned Dalmatian carcasses at her feet labeled “HP”, “Lucent”, “U.S. jobs”, etc. and a few more live, leaping puppies at her feet with labels of your choice.
I see Walker as a low energy-type of candidate, but he does have a reasonable resume. However, his waffling on a few key items has left people confused at this time.
67 total votes is soaring in the polls?
The point they were trying to make that even with his exposure, Romney allowed the dems to define him since he was not well known.
So yes, I believe those large percentages of people have not heard of some of these people. Two weeks ago, Carly's percentage of people who did not know of her was at 52% - that was only two weeks ago. So I do believe those numbers.
Actually, the polls show that the more the voters get to know Carly, her numbers go up. Ben’s is going down, so you probably will need to revise your post.
Hang on....I think Carson and Carly will take a dive shortly. Walker and Cruz will rise.
Also, I read a few weeks ago that his favorability rating in Wisconsin had sunk to 38%.
It seems to be almost universal that politicians running for office while in a different position lose favor as many voters don't see that as appropriate. If you look like you are going down in flames, those same voters pile on even more. It's just the way it is.
But there is the killing of HP and the under the table deal with Iran during the embargo. People will catch on.
A tiny sample like this in a national poll when only 4 states matter before everything could be upended isn’t very useful.
The decline in Trump’s numbers should be a concern though. If this is reflected in other polls then it could be a serious problem for him. He can’t afford to have the air let out of his balloon this early in the process.
I think you hit it here. Excellent analysis. Maybe if he gets elected to the senate and serves a term or two he'll be ready. Clearly not now, though.
Hank
Walker hasn’t gotten me riled up about anything.
Last I heard he wanted to go after government labor unions at a national level. I’ll be honest with. That’s probably got some substance to it, but it just isn’t high on my list of the concerns I have for this nation.
His website sent out a notice last week that campaign gear was 40 percent off.
I don’t think so. For many people, she’s a breath of fresh air. You will just have to let it play out. Posting stream of consciousness thoughts here is of no consequence. It’s a big country. Voters make up their own mind as you make up your own mind.
Actually, it seems that every single state and local government is ripping off the taxpayers by way of the unions but to regular folks, that's how government works. The union problem takes a lot longer to explain to people than illegals taking jobs and killing people.
He's not term-limited so he could if he wanted to. Not much else for him to do.
Independents are allowed to vote in about half of republican primaries. That is why they are included. In other states, democrats are allowed to vote in the republican primary, too. A republican only poll is not representative of who will vote. Thought you may like to know.
I meant to add that Walker should have spent his time explaining to America why unions needed to be reined in, rather than talking about the results of what he did.
Since it’s a CNN pole, forget it.
The more voters get to hear gushing mainstream media puff pieces on Carly ("rising star" "fearless debater", etc.), the more her numbers go up.
If voters got to know the REAL Carly (with her failed record in the private sector and poor Senate race in California as the handpicked McCain/Romney candidate), her numbers would go down.
