Now Is No Time to Be Voting for President Based on Emotion
NRO ^ | September 15, 2015 | Thomas Sowell

In a country with more than 300 million people, it is remarkable how obsessed the media have become with just one — Donald Trump. What is even more remarkable is that, after six years of repeated disasters, both domestically and internationally, under a glib egomaniac in the White House, so many potential voters are turning to another glib egomaniac to be his successor.

No doubt much of the stampede of Republican voters toward Mr. Trump is based on their disgust with the Republican establishment. The fact that the next two biggest vote-getters in the polls are also complete outsiders — Dr. Ben Carson and Ms. Carly Fiorina — reinforces the idea that this is a protest. It is easy to understand why there would be pent-up resentments among Republican voters. But are elections held for the purpose of venting emotions? No national leader ever aroused more fervent emotions than Adolf Hitler did in the 1930s. Watch some old newsreels of German crowds delirious with joy at the sight of him. The only things at all comparable in more recent times were the ecstatic crowds that greeted Barack Obama when he burst upon the political scene in 2008. Elections, however, have far more lasting, and far more serious — or even grim — consequences than emotional venting. The actual track record of crowd-pleasers, whether Juan Peron in Argentina, Obama in America, or Hitler in Germany, is very sobering, if not painfully depressing.

Cruz has a TV problem. He just doesn’t come off well on the TV.

Sowell has a point, and his superb record of being almost always right obliges us to consider it. On the particulars, although Trump's popularity has much emotional force behind it, that popularity is based on issues, not personality or emotions. Moreover, Trump's goals -- controlling immigration and restoring American prosperity, strength, and standing in the world -- are squarely Reaganesque. Accomplishing them would consume an entire eight year Presidency, with a desire for re-election and the institutional constraints of the American political system working to tame Trump's excesses.

I don’t support Trump, but I don’t blame his supporters for his popularity. He offers a similitude of a vision, though devoid of substance. It all sounds good—like Obamacare did to some—but what is he truly selling? Shall we all channel Pelosi and find out after we vote?

I will not vote for anyone based on some nebulous appeal to populism. We need a fighter, but a fighter who fights based on conviction, not ego. That is not Trump, but it’s also no other candidate.

Very few on FR even those who defend Trump are blind to his shortcomings. But at least I hope that his love of our nation overrides those as he is the only conservative candidate with enough support to date to win. Cruz is a wonderful man but not soaring in the polls. Carson lost me with his immigration stance and his belief that he could have subdued not shot the 300 lb bully Michael Brown- another seeming “cops acted stupidly” idea.

Cruz has a problem because of the very been trade deals he was a big part of in the US Senate. Only thing he actually got passed is bad news.

I say this as one of the original supporters of Cruz. He needs time.

Comparing the two is extremely insulting to Trump supporters.

Own it. It's a cult of personality. Nothing Trump says or does can disprove how great he is. Everything he is saying now is his true feelings, though they've apparently been hidden for 69 years.

The want to believe is great among these.

Yeah, because neither Bush ever did that and Jeb or Krispy have the giant stones to squash any democrat agenda.

I really hope Cruz can win the nomination, but I love seeing the hysterics by dem’s and rino’s over Trump.

The Republican pundits still can't grasp the fact that the base is fed up with being promised things over and over and then being told we can't do this right now because ( insert excuse here). The Republicans seem to have no problem helping the Democrats enact their agenda and are killing themselves to trying to find a way to get amnesty passed and more low wage visas issued. The last two Presidential candidates the Republicans pushed on us was the “maverick” who is always leaping across the aisle to join the Democrats, opposes every conservative position, and wants to welcome the whole of Mexico into the U.S. with all benefits they can grab. The next winner the forced on us pushed his own version of Obama Care on his home state while governor effectively taking the strongest issue in the election off the table ( also proving the Republicans are really for government run health care to off load corporate health care costs) and never really stood for anything expect I will reach out the other party to get things done in Washington. Now the next one the one to present to us goes around speaking Spanish to anyone and everyone, informs us that we're bigots and he doesn't need us and we have to accept speaking more new Americans as wages depress further and further downward. Let's not even mention Congress. The base is sick of the Republicans the pundits can try but if you selling a turd in a brown paper bag and calling candy it's still a turd in a brown paper bag.

Hahahahaha.....Good point. Sowell fails to say that.

It was very evident last night listening to Trump, that this country is really not divided along political lines, it’s divided between the people and the politicians.

I see no difference in the leaders of our party and the leaders of the other party.

In Trump, we see someone who may call himself a republican, but he seems to represent all of us.

I think he can win all 50 states. If he has someone running with him like a Ted Cruz, this country can be transformed, and then from here on out, we get the best most competent CEOs as president, NOT the career politicians.

Term limits. WE need term limits.

Yes. That is why he is way down the list for me. He was my top pick until the trade issue.

“For God’s sake, wake up from the fantasy of having our own “strong man” magic dictator and work on selecting a real candidate.”

We do have a real candidate and his name is Donald Trump.

“For God’s sake, wake up from the fantasy of having our own “strong man” magic dictator and work on selecting a real candidate.”

Here’s the latest idiotic pronouncement from the GOP:

“Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) says an 1883 poem requires Americans to accept huge numbers of Muslim refugees who are fleeing the jihad-shattered wreckage of their home nations and region.”

It’s not a mystery why conservatives are turning against the traitors at the GOPe. The GOPe has made no serious case to vote for anyone in that decaying party.

Cruz seems to be the only one that gets it and wants to get rid of the republican leadership that keeps making deals with dems and moving the dem agenda forward.

That’s exactly what we need.

Not only get rid of dems but get rid of people that are happy to work with dems.

I really don’t care about the claims of magical qualities. I care about the substantial damage he is doing to Jeb Bush.

If he were not, you’d not see the likes of Sowell, Kristol, Will, Krauthammer and every other sleazebag DC elite ‘conservative’ trash Trump every chance they get.

The won’t say anything good about Jeb or his amnesty and illegal policies, they won’t say much about him at all except to imply he’s the most electable, second-most evil alternative we have. Hogwash.

Everything - even reason - is sacrificed in a cult of personality. One thing Sowell touches upon is how the media have promoted Trump. In our society, all you need to become the god of the moment is media celebrityhood. It doesn’t really matter what you’re famous for, as long as you’re famous. Obama exploited that very well, and Trump has made a career of it and, in addition, has enough money of his own to keep turning up all over the place and keep his name in the news.

And there’s also the “if it bleeds, it leads” value. I lived in NY when Trump’s name was in lurid tabloid headlines everyday - for one of his messy divorces, for his latest affair with the Slavic model of the moment, for a ruthless property lawsuit, for a casino building scandal etc. He has found that you need neither moral character nor ideas to become a populist hero - simply Kardashian-style celebrityhood. And it is the very MSM that everybody here professes to hate that is orchestrating this.

I am not suggesting anyone vote for Graham.

There are other candidates who are sufficiently conservative to be worthy of being given a look. Not possible with Trump sucking all of the oxygen out of the room.
