Now Is No Time to Be Voting for President Based on Emotion
NRO ^ | September 15, 2015 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 09/15/2015 3:43:16 AM PDT by nikos1121

In a country with more than 300 million people, it is remarkable how obsessed the media have become with just one — Donald Trump. What is even more remarkable is that, after six years of repeated disasters, both domestically and internationally, under a glib egomaniac in the White House, so many potential voters are turning to another glib egomaniac to be his successor.

No doubt much of the stampede of Republican voters toward Mr. Trump is based on their disgust with the Republican establishment. The fact that the next two biggest vote-getters in the polls are also complete outsiders — Dr. Ben Carson and Ms. Carly Fiorina — reinforces the idea that this is a protest. It is easy to understand why there would be pent-up resentments among Republican voters. But are elections held for the purpose of venting emotions? No national leader ever aroused more fervent emotions than Adolf Hitler did in the 1930s. Watch some old newsreels of German crowds delirious with joy at the sight of him. The only things at all comparable in more recent times were the ecstatic crowds that greeted Barack Obama when he burst upon the political scene in 2008. Elections, however, have far more lasting, and far more serious — or even grim — consequences than emotional venting. The actual track record of crowd-pleasers, whether Juan Peron in Argentina, Obama in America, or Hitler in Germany, is very sobering, if not painfully depressing.

“Powell like Jindal and Walker.”

I just read a headline on a Louisiana news site. Jindal was all aghast at Trump’s four bankruptcy. He was trying to make political hay out of it.

The most ironic thing about this is that Jindal is about to leave office with the state’s financial condition in complete shambles. Jindal is Republican, he has a Republican House and a Republican Senate. They are all “conservative”. This state should be swimming in black ink.

When a Democrat takes the white House in 2016, it will be because of this moment in time and the reaction people are having to this “savior” personality.

That is Sowell’s point.

The emotional investment in this one man to do all the things we wish for, is no different than the “hope and change” line Obama fed the poor gormless idiots on the left.

On the brink of taking total control of the gov’t, the “base” has decided that they hate the part establishment more than they want to win the White House.

It’s an opportunity lost and it will bring bitter, bitter recriminations.

For God’s sake, wake up from the fantasy of having our own “strong man” magic dictator and work on selecting a real candidate.

“Are we to sacrifice even this messenger, Thomas Sowell, whose conservative credentials are unassailable in the service of Donald Trump?”

Mr. Sowell has simply written a ridiculous article and deserves to have it shoved back at him. There is a “large field of candidates, some with outstanding records” he claims in the article, yet only one sees the clear and present danger to our republic that illegal immigration represents.

The rest of them would be content to continue the status quo.

Whatever Mr. Sowell is or isn’t, he doesn’t see that this isn’t about Trump - it’s about illegal immigration, and the sociopathic behavior of the political class, particularly the GOP (we expect it out of democrats).

Let Americans fix the illegal immigration problem through the only candidate who articulates the imperative it should hold in every American - and every politician. They’ll do it through “Trump” because they have no other choice.

Emotion, indeed.

In his article on Trump, Sowell brings out 3 of the most notorious psychopathic leaders of the last 100 years Hitler, Peron, and Obama in which he seeks to compare those who dare oppose illegal immigration by supporting Trump are to be seen as not just wrong - but hated for how wrong they are (perhaps encouraging their punishment?) for merely not supporting the status quo on illegal immigration.

Thomas Sowell probably doesn’t have to feel the consequences of illegal immigration, indeed perhaps he benefits from it. He is wrong.

Sounds to me like he wants to send Trump supporters off to concentration camps for orderly disposal since they inconveniently oppose the destruction of American culture and society.

He places himself on the side of Hitler, Peron, and Obama in opposing Trump - and encourages other conservatives to do the same.

(See how that works....)

I will not be with Sowell/Hitler in destroying America.

I will be with Trump in fixing illegal immigration as a necessary step to saving America.

You aren’t with Hitler, are you?

The oligarchy is in chaos, there are vulgarians at the gate.

The Trumpinator delivers his message: come with me if you want to live.

Not a big mystery there Dr. Sowell.

If Bush drops out I will go back to the "normal" mental gymnastics required back the most benign RINO in a pack of RINOs. I will then eat my milquetoast and shut up, but Bush is to arrogant to drop out so while there is still red meat on the menu it is : Go Trump go!

——But are elections held for the purpose of venting emotions?——

well, yes.... periodically the people rise up to accept the glib charisma of a true leader

when the thought is to get rid of that which is oppressing, rational thought is displaced by anger and fear and other instinctively protective emotions. that concept is the very basis for liberalism

This cycle, dogmatic determinism is being replaced

NRO has devolved into a Anti Trump hate blog and old Tommy is just following the DC marching orders.

He just outed himself as another DC elite hack who doesn't want Trump in their club.

Good riddance to the NRO hate blog and tired DC hacks like Sowell .

If Obama represents the anti-American “glib egomaniac” and Trump the pro-American “glib egomaniac”, then maybe nothing short of a pro-American glib egomaniac is what it will take to turn things around.

Frankly, you’re just rehashing the same old arguments for the establishment except now with the added feature that the recalcitrant conservatives might just have a “magical savior” (your words). Dire consequences, etc. if we don’t elect a ‘real candidate’.....[I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you’re not talking about Jeb Bush].

We differ - greatly. I’m not going to change your mind nor you mine. I’m okay with that. See you at the ballot box.

"No national leader ever aroused more fervent emotions than Adolf Hitler did in the 1930s."

Jumped the shark is right. Isn't there a logic law that says the first one to bring up Hitler has lost the argument?

No, I’m not talking about Jeb. I would have much rather spent the last 2 months hearing the candidates and discussing the issues to find the best one. We have the opportunity to make real arguments about limited gov’t, over-regulation, the insanity of global warming and the war on energy.

But, no. Instead, it’s a reality show clown playing pied piper.

If you don’t think people are imbuing Trump with magical qualities, just look around. The claims of what he will do are largely farcical. People are projecting their dreams upon him. The same as people did with Obama.

It is inconceivable to me the levels that some FReepers are so hell bent on sticking their finger in the GOPe’s eye that they’re willing to rationalize ANYTHING. It is especially inconceivable to me when there are at least two other candidates who embody the entire wish list that we’ve had for 30 years of what we want in a conservative candidate.

The maniacal ravings of the more rabid Trump supporters are EXACTLY reminiscent of all we mocked the libs about when Obama was running...I have never been as sure of my country’s destruction as I am now.

Many of us like Cruz. If Trump wasn’t in the race and Cruz was leading the pack (it would be a miracle) wouldn’t we all be excited and a bit emotional with our support for Cruz? Would Sowell’s article apply to Cruz?

WTF? Are we not allowed to support a candidate that we think will win and do some good things? Reagan ignited emotion in people too. That’s how you get landslide elections.

Face it, our country is gone, we barely have a chance in hell to resuscitate it. I’ll roll the dice on Trump betting that he will be more ‘Reagan’ than ‘Obama’. What is there to lose?????

When did Sowell go hard Left? Or is his inner Obama-love coming through?

“I have never been as sure of my country’s destruction as I am now.”

Yet you blame Trump - for simply running for President and his supporters for simply supporting basic things like American sovereignty.

You don’t blame Obama, democrats, or the past, ineffective GOP leaders of the past 20 years.

Stop whining. Trump will not be the undoing of America. He’s done a great service - whether he is on the ballot or not - by making it “OK” for Americans to dare oppose their psychopathic leaders.
