~ Star Spangled Banner ~
Written by Francis Scott Key (1814)

Canteen Mission Statement

Showing support and boosting the morale of
our military and our allies military
and the family members of the above.
Honoring those who have served before.

The War of 1812 had been a particularly nasty conflict with the British. They had burned down the Capitol and the White House in Washington, and were set on taking the port of Baltimore, which was protected in part by Fort McHenry, just to the south.

On September 7th, 1814, during the build-up to the attack on Baltimore, two Americans, Colonel John Skinner and a lawyer and part-time poet by the name of Francis Scott Key, had gone out to one of the British ships. They had come to negotiate the release of Dr William Beanes, a friend of Key who had been seized following the attack on Washington. The British agreed, but all three had learned too much about the forthcoming attack on Baltimore and so were detained by the British on board the frigate Surprise until it was over.

The attack started on September 12th, 1814, and after an initial exchange of fire, the fleet withdrew to form an arc just outside the range of Fort McHenry's fire.

Skinner, Beanes and Key watched much of the bombardment from the British deck. The major attack started in heavy rain on the morning of September 13th. Just under three miles in the distance the three men caught glimpses of the star-shaped fort with its huge flag - 42ft long, with 8 red stripes, 7 white stripes and 15 white stars, and specially commissioned to be big enough that the British could not possibly fail to see it from a distance.

In the dark of the night of the 13th, the shelling suddenly stopped. Through the darkness they couldn't tell whether the British forces had been defeated, or the fort had fallen.

As the rain cleared, and the sun began to rise, Key peered through the lifting darkness anxious to see if the flag they had seen the night before was still flying. And so it was that he scribbled on the back of an envelope the first lines of a poem he called Defense of Fort M'Henry.

O, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming

Morning Beachie!

OK, did you march into your boss' office this morning and ask who he's hired to replace you? I hope you're not stressing out over it.

A lazy weekend for me, watched football and relaxed. Nice weather here continues, but cooler.

So, how was your long weekend? Are you practicing retirement? :-)

Have a great day Beachie.

Good morning Pro ((HUGS))

Stopping in for quick check.

OK, did you march into your boss' office this morning and ask who he's hired to replace you?

LOL. Sort of. And, he did make the offer to the woman this morning. She's happy as a lark. Now...if we can get her over here for some training, as the window is getting narrower. I have been stressing a bit, but we're in talks right now for me to come bac part-time to train her...two months only!

Our weather is sounding much like yours...today anyway...only in the 70s; rest of week 80s.

Saturday was mostly rainy or overcast, so after chores we kinda chilled. Sunday, we went visiting. Watched game and ate fall-off-the-bone ribs at our (quasi-adoptive) son's house.

UGH! I have to work 5 whole days this week :) Although, retirement luncheon is on Friday. You working today?

Have a marvelicious Monday.

Good morning Ma ((HUGS))
Bossman finally decided on my replacement.
Now, if we can work miracles, she might
be able to get some training before I leave.

Hope your weekend was good.

I remember in the morning: the bell would ring; we'd stand up and say our Morning Offering; then the Pledge of Allegiance,("Under God" included- I went to Catholic school) and the National Anthem. We'd all get the giggles because nobody could hit the high notes. Now I hear it and I cry- hand on my heart and all!

An interesting note: I had a ticket recently, and when I went to court, the Justice had us all stand up, hands on our hearts, facing the Flag, and saying the pledge. I don't know if that's standard procedure, (first ticket) but I thought that was REALLY great!!! (And he said, "Under God, besides! How cool was that?!?)

Anacreon must have been a pretty heavyweight drinker! That’s a complicated tune for someone who’s wasted. I bet he sat back and listened while everyone tried his drinking songs, and laughed!

Mom is home and mobile, but speaks of pain all the time. Her qua;ity of life has gone way down.

She DOES love the great grandchildren though! The two year old twins really cheer her up!

The ankle is gradually getting better, but is taking its time!

Try to imagine 50 or more besotted Londoners of the Anachreotic Society trying to sing that while in their cups. They probably sang it before the drinking began.

In AMC's series "Turn," you get a good sense of what those drinking bouts were like.
