A young mother's birth control pills helped cause her to have a stroke.
Bethany Fonseca has a history of migraines, but one particular day, her headache was different. She took pain medication and was about to enter the shower when the room starting spinning and she fell on the floor.
"I thought I was going to die," Bethany said. "My only thought ... was just, 'Let me see my kids again one more time.'"
She tried getting up but kept falling on the floor. Eventually, an ambulance took her to Baptist South hospital. "They ran some tests, and they wanted to discharge me, but ... I know what migraines feel like and this wasn't normal," she said. "The neurologist then did a stroke assessment, and I knew right then that something was wrong."
The neurologist later told her she had a stroke, very close to her brain stem. He told Bethany that her stroke was caused by her history of migraines, a hole in her heart, and her birth control pills.
A week later, after being discharged from the hospital, Bethany spent a week at Brooks Rehab, working with physical therapy assistant Michael Greene. Greene pushed Bethany harder than anyone else, helping her strengthen areas weakened by her stroke.
Greene says he's helped four women who have suffered strokes as a result of birth control pills. "A lot of people overlook the fact that [the pill bottle warns] it can cause a stroke," Greene explained. "And because she was so young, she thought she would not be affected by it."
Stroke is the third leading cause of death for women in the U.S. and is sometimes caused by birth control. The American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association have published guidelines warning against the increased risk of stroke birth control may have on some women.
Medical researchers have found that birth control pills increase blood pressure in some women. Especially in younger women, a combination of birth control pills and smoking increases the risk of heart disease by 20 percent.
The American Stroke Association warns that women who take even a low-estrogen birth control pill may be twice as likely to have a stroke than those who don't, and the risk may increase if other risk factors are present.
If you don't mind losing a few girls.
"A price we're willing to pay."
A known problem.
RU-486 also kills people.
Dems don’t care.
To quote Charles Stanley:
“You will never go wrong obeying God, and you will never go right disobeying Him.”
Headline leaves out pretty important info re: her other conditions.
Exactly. The pills, in combination with some preexisting health problems, caused her stroke.
Birth control is lethal. I’ll never forget the look on my lib brother in law’s face when I said my husband loves just the way I am, and not controlled by artificial chemicals. I then likened birth control to war on women.
Dangerous combination of
Migraine, Birth Control Pills, and Smoking
Ortho-Novum had a history of either stroke or blindness.
It’s a miracle that more women are not affected.
But, it also may be the reason more women use abortion as a birth control method. Hmmmm ..?? Is there a link there ..?? Wow! I hadn’t thought about that before ..!!
Migraines usually start when you go off the pill .. and then go away when you go back on them. Very dangerous stuff.
“Dangerous combination of
Migraine, Birth Control Pills, and Smoking”
Absolutely! Related, for all out there who have migraines, keep in mind that they are not innocuous. If you have them frequently, you need to see someone and talk about potential triggers and potential pharmacological intervention.
Dems don’t think it’s a problem
When I was young, I had migraines and I smoked. I started taking birth control pills but they gave me such severe migraines that I only took several of them. Good thing I quit!
This has been a known side effect for at least 40-45 years, if not longer. Young people almost never believe that bad things will ever happen to them, which is why God invented parents and other adults with brains and experience.
Unfortunately, Obama and others like him aren’t mature and caring adults. They are overgrown children with an agenda.
All medicines have side effects, some of them can be very dramatic in a small percentage of people. She’s in a small fraction of 1% group. Which doesn’t suck any less for her, but also doesn’t mean all the women on the pill are going to fall over dead any minute now.
And both are a woman's rejection of herself as she is: physically and psychologically whole and sound, complete in every detail.
What people ARE saying, is that this it is completely unnecessary esp. for women in this age group (15-35), in what are normally their decades of most robust health, to be dying of strokes.
You can absolutely avoid unintended pregnancies without loading your body with artificial hormones you wouldn't even want in your ground beef.
In April of 2014, I had a calf pain & swelling which turned out to be a blood clot.
I was under medical care for several months, and the question I heard most often was, “Do you take oral contraceptives?” It is a BIG risk factor.
People drop dead. Notice she had a history of migraines and a hole in her heart. Her body was a ticking timebomb, she should have been more aware and sought a different method, not all the pills exacerbate heart problems, and as you point out there are alternatives.
Too many people off load too much of their health onto their doctors. Much like too many people off load too much of their kids’ education on the teacher. You need to tell the doctor about your history, you need to tell the doctor about your side effects. I’d been on lipitor for a while and then noticed my legs were hurting a lot, remembered was one of the warning signs of bad side effects, so I stopped taking it and they stopped hurting almost immediately. Had my next checkup a few weeks later, told my doctor, he said it was the right move. You need to be an active participant in your own health.
And here I am preaching at myself. I have brought on some of my own health woes, and I know it.
In Sept 2013, I had a follow up colonoscopy scheduled. Same doctor as before. Same "prep" including Amitiza. The second encounter with Amitiza was bad. I spent over 8 hours coughing fluid from my lungs to avoid drowning in my own fluids. I looked up side-effects. Yup. 1% of the population has that problem. The colonoscopy was a festival of polyp harvesting. Ten days later, on of the spots "snipped" blew out a blood vessel. I spent the night prepping for another emergency colonoscopy to "fix" the bleeder. My BP dropped to 84 over 42 during the night. I've been reticent to return for a follow up. Being proactive almost took me out.
There are some hazards associated with medications that can be identified before subjecting the patient. One of my dogs was tested before administering a medication to clear a patch of mange. Better safe than sorry.
The pill probably has something to do with homosexuality, and it’s in our drinking supply.
