Russia tells Washington: talk to us over Syria or risk 'unintended incidents'

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia called on Friday for Washington to restart direct military-to-military cooperation to avert "unintended incidents" near Syria, at a time when U.S. officials say Moscow is building up forces to protect President Bashar al-Assad's government.

The United States is leading a campaign of air strikes against Islamic State fighters in Syrian air space, and a greater Russian presence would raise the prospect of the Cold War superpower foes encountering each other on the battlefield.

Both Moscow and Washington say their enemy is Islamic State. But Russia supports the government of Assad, while the United States says his presence makes the situation worse.

In recent days, U.S. officials have described what they say is a buildup of Russian equipment and manpower.

Putin has said Assad is ready to share power with healthy opposition. So, in other words, this thing may be able to come to a conclusion finally.

"A Mig-31 is a little out of place in Syria. Su-27s would be a better fit. "

Yeah, you're right about that.

Unless it's role is to intercept US aircraft.

It’s all going according to Obama’s plan......can you imagine ANY of this happening if we had a strong Conservative in the WH???? Russia and the rest would have been to afraid too do what they have been doing. I am not necessarily a Trump supporter, but do believe that Trump is the only one that scares the crap out of those who are terrorizing the world.

Looking at wikipedia, the Mig-31 can do the Wild Weasel anti-radar role and its radar can be used in the AWACS role.

While what you say is reasoned and true at this point, how does that change the moment an Israeli first strike is launched to take out the Iranian nuclear program?

From that point it escalates dramatically.

Obama’s moves with Iran and this Russian intervention set in place a perfect enactment of Ezekiel 38.

It’s amazing to me how things are closing in on that eventuality.

And as soon as the fool takes out a few Russian assets the party will be on.

"They’re there to make sure Israel doesn’t take out the Iranian nuclear weapons program."

I suppose that's possible, but Russia has never shown direct hostility toward Israel in the past.

They would have to be already airborne to have a chance at intercepting an Israeli raid....no they would not.

They would be able to chase down Israeli aircraft as they were transiting across Jordan and Iraq.

But don't forget the Russians wanted us to believe that a Ukrainian Su-27 (operating well above its operational altitude) shot down that jetliner.

RE” “I can see Putin and Europe to tell America to go to hell”

Sagely so -
Look for upcoming unified EU media-lawmaker-citizen voice in Europe fully blaming the US for creating IS / ISIS / Daesh and the resulting epic humanitarian crisis across the middle east and europe, ie: the US broke the middle east, and we own responsibility.
Obola has wrecked any remaining good will and respect for America, once leader of the free world - Just as planned.
Nero 2.0 on a global scale.

When will Obola be stripped of his Nobel Peace Prize, and be brought before The Hague to stand trial for war crimes?

The Putinista cheerleaders will be happy

Putin is fighting against ISIS, and we're fighting with ISIS. I'll have to side with Russia on this one.

That's Ivan-speak for those that survive.

Hell's a comin' to Assad's enemies.

Good! Because the idea of non-ISIS opposition to Assad is a myth.

Once again, that is true, however Russia’s allies in the region are Syria and Iran.

It is not Israel, and Israel would be deemed to be attacking a Russian ally.

How does that end?

I believe it ends at the very least with air strikes in Israel. What that leads to, I don’t even want to contemplate.

Russia didn’t think this one out very well.

Maybe the best Radar and Tracking of any fighter in the sky today.

"I believe it ends at the very least with air strikes in Israel."

I have no access to secret intelligence, but I don't believe Russia would attack Israel under any but existential circumstances.

Just penetrating that air space would be very costly for them.

However, the scenario where they intercept Israeli aircraft en route to an Iranian raid is plausible.

I wished that would happen, but I don't think it will

He is responsible, IMO, for all of it....for killing 4 Americans in Benghazi, running guns to Syria to get rid of Assad, for the ISIS that has now over ran Iraq, and other countries....

Yesterday I read where the U.S. told Russia to get out of Ukraine, why should they? I think the only thing holding anything together right now is Russia, and I hate Russia, but the muslim in chief has done so much damage that I don't know if we will ever get back the respect we worked so hard for...and then there is Israel...

The muslim in chief wants to meet with Bibi, Why? Hasn't he done enough damage to Bibi??? I would say so, in fact, if I were Bibi, I would invite him over, and the minute the muslim in chief touches down, I would be flying out of the Country on an ‘emergency’.....

Nope, this deal yesterday, the day before the 14th anniversary of 9/11 has done it for me....I'm a Trump supporter all the way, and I just hope when Trump gets into office, he will have enough to turn this country around...

So, whom is the US supporting vs. assad, and how do we determine whom they are.... and really... why? Except as yet another proxy war against soviets.

ISIS is our creation out of the “mcCain” moderate “rebels” who turn out to be yet another pretender to the caliphate... or... an extension of al-qaeda by another name.

This is so out of hand it is ridiculous. Would hate to be an operator on the ground there with CIA “support”. But it does support more military industrial product lines.

Assad: pro-Iranian, Pro-Russian, and has left Christians alone in the country.
Obamaumao: pro-Iranian (esp. nukes), pro-”rebels” aka ISIS, and pro-caliphate (stamped with the Saudi OK and a ticket to Mecca).
Brennan: a muslim convert from Roman (Irish) Catholicism.
Huma: a muslim brotherhood operative within State, and now with the BIll, Hill and Chelsea criminal foundation for self aggrandizement.

Obamaumao as part of that “flexibility” he spoke about with Medvedev.

There is a war going on undercover, and within our intel...hopefully so that the US national interest is preserved, and not petro/natural gas/euro politics, and russian criminal enterprise.

Since the Russians are supporting Assad and the Syrian government, would you bomb them for the benefit of ISIS?

Right now there are two sides in Syria - bad and worse. We opposed the bad, so by default we are supporting the worse. Although we pretended that there was a significant number of "good guys", if there were any they quickly got killed or switched sides. Right now our best path is to kill off the expansionist cancer of ISIS - or to just avoid the whole mess of the Middle East and pump our own oil.
