Donald Trump: Legalize ALL the Drugs [wayback machine]
The Daily Beast ^ | August 8, 2015 | Asawin Suebsaeng

Posted on 09/07/2015 1:58:59 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

".....The reform-minded Trump of decades past is a far more attractive figure than his current incarnation, at least in the eyes of the pro-legalization advocates of today.

“Well, I certainly think he had it right in 1990, and what he said then actually seemed to understand the situation,” David Boaz, executive vice president of the libertarian Cato Institute, told The Daily Beast. “My sense is that looking for consistent philosophy or even policies in Donald Trump’s statements is a pretty fruitless exercise.”

Boaz also pointed out that Trump recently voiced his support for medical marijuana, and that when asked about Colorado, the 2016 GOP contender essentially said that states should be able to decide on legalizing recreational weed. “That actually puts him on the liberal wing of Republican presidential candidates in terms of drug policy,” Boaz continued.

“I’m much more surprised that [Trump] ever got it right than I am that he’s getting it wrong now,” Matt Welch, editor in chief of Reason magazine, wrote in an email. “Probably goes to show that if you spend decades just mindlessly and confidently blurting out whatever comes to mind, you’ll eventually hit on the right answer.....”

...“What I’d like to do maybe by bringing it up is cause enough controversy that you get into a dialogue on the issue of drugs so people will start to realize that this is the only answer; there is no other answer,” he said 25 years ago...

It happens. I used to believe in the “War on Drugs” and used to be a flaming liberal.

I changed. It happens.

Now, de-criminalize pot & go Trump!!! (one has nothing to do with the other)

Personally, I’m for legalizing whatever you’re taking...

These threads are rather funny.

It’s driving them crazy that this stuff isn’t working.

They blame that on us, but after so many election cycles where they’ve pulled this same ‘personal destruction’ routine, we’re not in the mood for it any longer.

The gig is up.

Trump is simply dishonest.

And, I’m going to be honest - I don’t give a rat’s behind how he does in the debates either. I’m still going to vote for him. These debates are stupid as far as I’m concerned. They are set up to make the stations money and that’s all they are good for, in my opinion.

Try ‘em then execution via inert nitrogen gas would be fine. Or a firing squad composed of family members of stupid druggies who have ODed

Yes kill them all. Including all those that drink and sell alcohol. Right?

Yea let’s put people in jail for drinking alcohol too huh?

The sick and dying will now be voting for Trump too as will people who like being free, vs C.Wife and Walker who like big govt nanny state ruling our lives.

President Trump for shrinking govt!

Thanks C.W was concerned Trump was for the failed war on drugs and he was going to make the sick and dying suffer more, but you have cleared that up for me and I have another reason to support Trump. BTW I have no reasons to support Walker.

You fail to realize your nonsense makes Trump more popular everyday here at FR.

Sure, making them money and destroying candidates.

I know exactly what you mean. I agree.

Besides, using the term debates for these shows is woefully inaccurate.

Yeah, the "War on Drugs" is one of America's hugely successful programs.

It's right up there with Prohibition as a government success story. That stopped the black market for booze as surely as the war on drugs has stopped...oh, wait a minute.

“Next we’ll be hearing from The Donald how awful the “deal” with Iran is.”

Donald Trump has been a business man and a good one. He has been for decades. Why don’t you give Donald Trump, the Presidential candidate a chance to show us what he can do as a politician? The election is a long way off.

My compliments for the great service being done for Trump in posting this stuff. By in large most libertarians within the gop and outside are suspicious of DT. Pointing out that he was at one time in favor of outright legalization will go far in bridging the trust gap.

If drugs were legalized, and the federally supported market collapses, they'll starve to death. Why kill them? They'll die soon enough in turf wars over a shrinking market. As someone pointed out on another thread, with the actual unemployment hovering around 40%, smuggling, money laundering and street sales is not a resume enhancement, unless you're a Democrat financial investment broker.

Alcohol Prohibition took 12 years to go from "Great Idea!" to "Maybe we screwed up." It's been a century, and only because of Federal price supports have drugs staggered along.

Idea: Sell heroin and coke at true manufacturer's prices, per pound, 99% pure. That will kill all the old druggies, and if new ones are created, they'll die soon enough. It's not like they are an addition to the Social Order.
