Burning Man founder Larry Harvey has countered criticism of the lack of racial diversity at the festival by saying that part of the reason there are so few black attendees (known as burners) is that I dont think black folks like to camp as much as white folks.
In an interview with the Guardian, Harvey vowed that were not going to set racial quotas, defended the presence of rich Silicon Valley executives at the festival, and said he will personally go undercover this week to investigate the luxurious camps of ultra-wealthy tech bosses said by the New York Times to boast chefs, air conditioning and servants.

The trips were well organized and equipped. There were several heavy passenger cars and vans to carry the travelers, household staff, and equipment; Ford Motor Company photographers also accompanied the group. The 1919 trip involved fifty vehicles, including two designed by Ford: a kitchen camping car with a gasoline stove and built-in icebox presided over by a cook and a heavy touring car mounted on a truck chassis with compartments for tents, cots, chairs, electric lights, etc.

Same reason they don’t surf or swim— atavistic memories from the slave ships and the “sharks that still follow the course of the slave ships, even today” (some idiot congressman posited this ridiculous notion). LOL.
If you’re camping in lion country you need a kraal of thornbushes, around the camp.
Swimming in african rivers— not generally recommended, black or white, as the crocodiles make no distinction for supper.
How can we make the Black Panther Party more diverse?
Damned racist Hippies!
Years ago I preferred “backpacking” to camping as well; find a remote spot and enjoy it. It has been a few years; I still have my gear (which was a comfort during the power outage brought on by Hurricane Sandy), and hope to go again.
I had a black woman come to my jail in Palmer during the annual state fair. She mentioned she didn’t like being this far out of town, meaning Anchorage. When I told her Palmer was a nice place to live she said it had too many trees and would never want to live there.
Correct answer: “Well maybe black people are discouraged by all the ‘whites only’ signs, the barbed wire fences, the klan guardsmen and the police dogs. Oh wait. We don’t have any of those things. So why don’t you go ask some black people why more of them don’t attend? Because I have no idea.”
I know the type. I’ve attended a Energy Fair in Wisconsin held over the summer Solstice weekend, same crowd. At least two legalize hemp tents.
DING DING DING
They are desperately trying to blame Whitey for this.
I always heard crocodiles preferred the dark meat.
Camping just means that there is no room service.
3 ounces Bulliet Rye, 1 oz Molly Prat Vermouth,3 drops Peychauds, 3 drops Fee Brothers orange bitters. Mix with ice in chilled cocktail shaker but stir, NEVER shake. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with two Luxardo cherries. (You are worth it my friend).
Enjoy.

Nahhh- it all tastes “just like chicken” to them. Or, hippo.
I find them camping by the river al the time
LOL! Yeah, I checked Gerlach and Black Rock City and it was around 35 or so. Heck it was 42 in Golden Valley yesterday morning. Forty five this a.m. So, I guess there were lots of folks close to the bonfire on the playa last night.
There aren’t that many black people in the West, period.
We’ve camped on the east coast and in the south and have seen black people. One place we camped in Virginia, there was a black RV club from Richmond all camped together.
Wherever there is a small fishing lake on the east coast, you’re likely to find black people fishing - usually several generations and they’re having a great time.
There’s a new trend called “glamping”, but I think that more or less refers to resorts with tent cabins and upscale amenities.
