Rick Perry: Border Wall Nothing More Than Rhetoric
Legal Insurrection ^ | 09/05/2015 | Kemberlee Kaye

Posted on 09/06/2015 7:11:39 AM PDT by nhwingut

Joining Lou Dobbs earlier this week, Former Texas Governor Rick Perry was asked to explain his stance on illegal immigration and border security.

“I think we need to flesh everyone out from the stand point of of just the rhetoric. When somebody says, ‘let’s build a wall,’ then I think it’s appropriate to say, it’s good to have this conversation, it’s good that we are having this conversation that now for thirty years, this border has not been secured. We’ve known it’s been a problem,” said Perry.

Dobbs interjected that he doesn’t believe a single candidate talking about immigration issues because “we’ve heard it all before.”

“Good for you!” responded Perry.

“The fact is, until the media really digs in on this issue and says explains to me exactly what you’re talking about when it comes to securing the border, because everything goes back to that. Whether it’s this issue about these people on welfare, whether it’s the cost to states when it comes to the schools… You know all of the cost of this border that’s not secure has been mounting up and costing billions and billions of dollars. So the issue all goes back to securing the border. If you secure the border, this whole conversation about the 14th amendment, those go away.”

We know how to secure the border, Lou. The issue is, we have not had the will in the White House to do that and we haven’t had the will in Congress. Washington is completely corrupt when it comes to this issue.”

Dobbs asked Perry what he would do to secure the border.

“Let’s talk about reality. It’s 1,933 miles from Tijuana right there by San Diego all the way to El Paso, and El Paso to Brownsville. So you must understand really understand the size and the scope of this to really get your hands around it.

Then you must believe that man power and boots on the ground are the real key issue here. Whether you build a that’s 20 feet high and 1,933 miles long, and you ask the question how long’s that going to take to build and what’s that going to cost, but there’s a better way, I will suggest to you and it’s having the personnel in the right places, the boots on the ground in the right places. It is the strategic fencing and the type of wall, if that’s what you want to call it, in the metropolitans and the aviation assets, Lou. If you don’t have the aviation assets looking down 24/7, making the analysis of what’s going on along that border, both side, identifying where the problems are and quick response teams to interdict, that’s when you secure the border.” [emphasis added]

Perry and Dobbs also discussed a key component missing from the border security discussion — our relationship with Mexico. Holding Mexico responsible, assessing the foreign aid they receive, and considering our trade partnerships are all crucial parts of any strategy to secure the border.

Perry explained working with Mexico to secure their Southern border should be part of a comprehensive strategy as well.

“I will suggest to you that we can also be of assistance on the Southern border with Mexico because that’s where a lot of these challenges come from. Last summer, it was Central American kids that were coming up here, showing up here. It wasn’t Mexican citizens.”

Pathetic jellyfish responses. The guy is totally untrustworthy and incompetent.

Why is anyone even talking with or about him?

Well Perry, that just means that having a conversation is useless. The meme, “When we build the wall, we can have a conversation” about the illegals already here is weasel words for amnesty. You can book it.

Let's travel back in time:

Rick Perry, "...a 2,420 mile Interstate Highway from coast to coast, nothing more then rhetoric."

Rick Perry, "...a 3,000 mile Intercoastal Waterway, nothing more than rhetoric."

Rick Perry, " a space trip of 238,000 miles to the moon, nothing more than rhetoric."

Rick Perry, the "Can't-Do" candidate.

Yet Perry supported in-state tuition for illegal aliens.

I've heard that based on the moats and ground defenses, Hadrian's wall was primarily to keep Scottish raiders from returning north with stolen goods and livestock and thus make it not worth their trouble to cross in the first place. The equivalent would be to restrict and require full ID on fund transfers to Mexico.

That being said, we should still build a border barrier. Now it might be possible to argue that there are a few hundred wilderness miles where it isn't worth it. Then let's build the first thousand miles and see whether we've hit the point of diminishing returns. We will still need observation of the fence and guards to quickly return those who crossed, or else the wall will just be an obstruction to take a couple extra minutes to cross. But the wall shows that there is a new seriousness about the issue. Also citizen videos of Mexicans climbing it with no repercussions will embarrass an administration far more that videos of the same Mexicans just walking across the border.

You make it sound like Perry invited people in to attend college in Texas. That is not how it was. If the kid had been brought here as a child, attended Texas school, graduated highschool, and was applying for citizenship, they could have in state tuition.

In other words if they are here to stay he would rather have them educated.

Then why did Congress vote twice to build it? I guess they think all they have to do is say it and not do it and we’ll all forget about it and be happy.

Trump is the first candidate to put into writing what he would do. He is also the first to publicly state what the others know, but won't admit. The key to illegal immigration is not border security. It is employment. Secondary is access to government support and programs. Pull those two and your 90% there.

On the border security side, I can't believe the awkward silence over one of the most directly attributable policies that has encouraged border crossings. Obama's illegal "dreamer" order was directly responsible for the massive increase in juvenile crossings. If I was a politician I would be hammering on that, and the inherent risks to those children. The Democrats can't run slave ships anymore so they have to get their plantation workers to self transport.
