Muslim Flight Attendant Says She Was Suspended For Refusing To Serve Alcohol

By Emanuella Grinberg and Carma Hassan September 5, 2015

(CNN)A Muslim flight attendant says she was suspended by ExpressJet for refusing to serve alcohol in accordance with her Islamic faith.

In a bid to get her job back, Charee Stanley filed a discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on Tuesday for the revocation of a reasonable religious accommodation.

She wants to do her job without serving alcohol in accordance with her Islamic faith -- just as she was doing before her suspension, her lawyer said.

"What this case comes down to is no one should have to choose between their career and religion and it's incumbent upon employers to provide a safe environment where employees can feel they can practice their religion freely," said Lena Masri, an attorney with Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Stanley, 40, started working for ExpressJet nearly three years ago. About two years ago she converted to Islam. This year she learned her faith prohibits her from not only consuming alcohol but serving it, too, Masri said.

She approached her supervisor on June 1 and was told to work out an arrangement for someone to fulfill passenger requests for alcohol.

I would not at all be surprised if God said: "America, you've made your choice. Deal with it."

There seems to be one or maybe two incidences in history like this...

They will push for the introduction of halal (clean by Islamic standards) food, thereby securing food preparation jobs for Muslims. They will increase pressure on supermarket chains to feature it on their shelves — along with threats for failure to comply. (United States ).

Have you tried the hummus?

It's reported to be delicious!

The Constitution, as written, puts constraints on government via the Bill of Rights and the 14th Amendment. For instance the fedguv and now the states can have no religious test for public office. The local synagogue or the Knights of Columbus have no such constraints. It’s their religion or take a hike.

Private companies should be able to hire and fire for cause or no cause. Public accommodation be damned.

She refuses to do what is required of her, she should be summarily fired!

No ifs, ands or buts!

When/if the government tells ExpressJet that they cannot fire the woman for refusing to perform her assigned duties, we have lost the country, fer shure, fer shure!

That's worked out well...

True; but have the REQUIREMENTS changed under her; without her agreeing to them??

Did she have to RESIGN the documents stating she'd follow these NEW requirements?

You are getting way down on the weeds on this thread, Elsie.

If the woman won’t do what is required of her, she should be fired, government or no; labor union or no!

So; it appears that you do not care if her job description changed and she had no input to it.

There you go again, back in the weeds!

There has been absolutely NO discussion of a change in job description in this article, except, of course, your speculation in the matter.

If you are able to show me proof positive that her job description changed subsequent to her employment, I’ll reconsider my stance on this issue.

As it is, “do the work required or you are fired!”

Sigh...

She DID the work; and determined that the ones wanting a marriage license were NOT qualified to obtain one in her jurisdiction UNDER THE LAW as it is written.
