Sowell: A Revealing Clue
Creators Syndicate ^ | September 1, 2015 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 08/31/2015 1:20:16 PM PDT by jazusamo

Even those of us who are not supporters of either Donald Trump or Jeb Bush can learn something by comparing how each of these men handled people who tried to disrupt their question-and-answer period after a speech.

After Bush's speech, hecklers from a group called "Black Lives Matter" caused Bush to simply leave the scene. When Trump opened his question-and-answer period by pointing to someone in the audience who had a question, a Hispanic immigration activist who had not been called on simply stood up and started haranguing.

Trump told the activist to sit down because someone else had been called on. But the harangue continued, until a security guard escorted the disrupter out of the room. And Jeb Bush later criticized Trump for having the disrupter removed!

What kind of president would someone make who caves in to those who act as if what they want automatically overrides other people's rights — that the rules don't apply to them?

Trump later allowed the disrupter back in, and answered his questions. Whether Trump's answers were good, bad or indifferent is irrelevant to the larger issue of rules that apply to everyone. That was not enough to make "The Donald" a good candidate to become President of the United States. He is not. But these revealing incidents raise painful questions about electing Jeb Bush to be leader of the free world. The Republican establishment needs to understand why someone with all Trump's faults could attract so many people who are sick of the approach that Jeb Bush represents.

No small part of the internal degeneration of American society has been a result of supposedly responsible officials caving in to whatever group is currently in vogue, and allowing them to trample on everyone else's rights.

“September 1, 2015”

And last election cycle he advocated supporting Mittens.

Ironically, decent people are often slowest to see the perfidy that lurks in a scumbag’s heart. I hope that’s what is going on with Dr, Sowell.

I agree this is exactly why the GOP is in trouble. Nothing is worth fighting for. I am tired of hearing from leadership “there is nothing else we can do to stop _____”. Well you can do something, and that something is take out the trash like trump did.

This is why Trump is surging and Little Jebbie is fading.

Dr. Sowell, the greatest living American intellectual.
Only in your (and his?) mind.

He might be a little too full of himself when he pretends to be a soothsayer predicting the future...or was he planting seeds?

Yep. Jeb needs to be banished to detention and forced to write the following 500 times:

No small part of the internal degeneration of American society has been a result of supposedly responsible officials caving in to whatever group is currently in vogue, and allowing them to trample on everyone else's rights.

Wasn’t Jeb raised in Texas? You’d think that a little bit of Texas courage would have rubbed off at least a little.

Most Americans don’t want a wimpy president.

I was thinking the same thing. Every one suffers from cognitive dissonance. A person can identify why and alter their thinking, or they can double down. I hope it will be the first.

The latest “Trump scandal” as Rush sees it is the fact that “nobody can be well known, and have high negatives, and still be a viable candidate. Trump has high negatives and a low ceiling of support.” Except that Trump has done exactly that, and it is inexplicable.

But I can explain it easily and clearly. A month ago if you had polled me about Donald Trump, I would have had a negative impression. In many ways I still do. But today, if you poll me about Trump in the context in which he now stands I would tell you I have a positive opinion of him.

Because it is a matter of, “compared to what?” As Sowell indicates, JEB isn’t looking too attractive - and it is Trump who is revealing that. And of course, Trump has set the Republican agenda in a positive direction. Trump doesn’t have to be the second coming of Ronaldus Maximus to be better in the race than out of it.

Hence, in context, Trump polls drastically better now than he did before.

It’s the context, stupid!

Interesting that Dr. Sowell used the two examples for his essay. Sowell can’t quite bring himself to acknowledge Trump’s handling Ramos showed ‘leadership’. Gumption yes, but not leadership (as qualification for a potus).

I just wish he move beyond the “Jeb! is definitely not the guy, but Trump isn’t either”. It’s getting a bit tiresome.

Look at the field, who else? Both Dr. Carson and Sen. Cruz are nice guys, but I don’t see either one of them handling Ramos as skillfully as Trump did. I don’t know how Dr. Carson will respond, but I can see Sen. Cruz debating the guy to death. Hm. Nope, not at this moment in time. [Cruz has plenty of years ahead of him, he can hone his skills, build his brand.]

They may be too old, but how about Alan West?

Not as familiar with him. Even if they would be younger Sowell and Williams are too smart than to want to run.

I saw Keyes speak at a Tea Party event a couple years ago. He's fantastic as well.
