For more than a century, the tallest mountain on the continent was named after the 25th U.S. president, William McKinley.
Now, in honor of Alaska's indigenous Athabascan people, who had always called it "Denali," President Barack Obama is changing it back, the White House said in a release Sunday.

If this becomes a trend look for a batch of Mooselim names to start cropping up
Look for Obama to rename the Rockies.....The Mohammed Moutains!
Removing Confederate Flags, Generals, etc. be careful that this isn’t part of an orchestrated purge of American histories.
Some may think this if fine and you may be playing right into the purge that is being set to go full out.
It is interesting that with all the divisionary tactics and recent historical purges, this unilateral renaming isn’t setting off any alarm bells?
this is the TIP O’ The Iceberg!
THIS JUST IN:
MARYLAND to be renamed Michelleland...
Wouldn’t surprise me.
Wouldn’t surprise me.
I doubt we’d have FReepers jumping on that band wagon, but sometimes you wonder...
The interior secretary has the legal authority to change the name if the Board of Geographic Names doesn’t decide on a request in a “reasonable time.” Alaska first requested the name change 40 years ago, and the board has not yet made a ruling. The administration contends that 40 years is more than enough time for it to have made a decision, so the secretary has the authority to make the decision.
If the name was established by statute, I care.
Not about the name.
Rather, about the latest example of Obama lawlessness.
Thank you!
Not to defend Zero in the least, but the problem here was that even Alaska Republicans call it Denali. As much as I revile stripping the names, calling it McKinley never caught on up there, and restoring it would be pointless.
One name I’d like to strip is JFK from the NYC airport and restore it back to Idlewild.
Yes, clearly renaming a mountain from McKinley to Denali is analogous to “our kids being sold on homosexuality.”
Sarah Palin calls it Denali too. Is she one of those leftist activists?
I, for one, am sick of things being named after politicians. Especially natural formations. So reversing that is fine by me. The blind squirrel (Obama) managed to find a nut. It happens.
The Secretary of the Interior has the authority to change the name. See post #107. Is 40 years enough time for you?
Yeah, I lived in Fairbanks and we always use to call it McKinley. I’ll call it something else in honor of Obama now.
I appreciate the input. If the power to rename is vested in the Secretary of the Interior, and a 40 year hold-up in congress certainly seems to be excessive when the home state wants the change, then this is much ado about nothing.
As I stated earlier - if it is legal - I care not. If illegal, I care.
It appears I should care not.
Next month he’s renaming Mt. Washington to Mt. Skittles.
Thanks for your response.
Let me know when you want them to start reverting all places in the U. S. back to the native American names.
We’ll try to comply as quickly as we can...
Well when literally everyone in the entire state refers to the mountain as Denali, and the State formally requested that the name be changed forty YEARS ago, then it seems to make sense to call it Denali.
But if thats the hill you want to die on, go for it.
ahahaha That’s Our Obie!!!
vermont or new hampsire has the white ...mountains...
soon to be renamed the Trayvon Martin Mountains
Many things in nature have been renamed around the world.
Evidently you are going to line up with those who wish to remove Western civilization’s names from those objects.
I’m not signing on board.
Who ever and when ever someone replaces us on this land, they will rename things, as is their right.
The name Denali wasn’t short-changed. The Third largest United States park was named that.
This is nothing more than an exercise in political correct thought. It won’t stop here.
Sarah Palin calls the mountain Denali. Is she politically correct? The whole state wants it named Denali and has wanted it that way for 40 years. I love how some Freepers are for State’s rights... until they aren’t.
Let’s have a little intellectual honesty, shall we? You hate this decision because you hate Obama. There’s no rational basis behind it.
