The interior secretary has the legal authority to change the name if the Board of Geographic Names doesn’t decide on a request in a “reasonable time.” Alaska first requested the name change 40 years ago, and the board has not yet made a ruling. The administration contends that 40 years is more than enough time for it to have made a decision, so the secretary has the authority to make the decision.
