Just before the new semester kicked off at Old Dominion University, some un-"welcome" signs have resulted in a fraternity's suspension.
Parents bringing their freshmen students to move-in at the Norfolk, Virginia, campus and community last week might have glimpsed these banners hanging from the balcony of a private home.
"Rowdy and Fun. Hope your baby girl is ready for a good time," read one of the signs, which was spray-painted on a sheet. "Freshman daughter drop off," and "Go ahead and drop off mom too," were messages displayed on two other sheets, CNN affiliate WTKR reported.
Members of the Sigma Nu fraternity live at the house, and now the national Sigma Nu organization has suspended the group while it investigates the incident.

Sigma Nu started at VMI. One of the better frats IMO.
It’s 11:25 AM and Fox News, NY is about discuss this fraternity and they showed the same picture that is in #1.
As the very protective father of a freshman daughter, I don’t see this as a real threat to my daughter. Yes, it’s a bit crass but this is just some frat boys having a bit of fun. There are real threats out there in life and this isn’t one of them.
I was dropped off and I approve!
lol
Seems to me this is being handled properly. The University is not suspending them for lacking political correctness, their own organization is investigating crass, low class behavior. Were I a Sigma Nu, I certainly wouldn’t want to be associated with such behavior.
Started at VMI, but as an alum, I can tell you all frats were disbanded for being disruptive to the corps.
That’s what I was thinking. The banners were not offensive in a non-PC way (at least to my thinking), but they were crude and classless. I think the university is within their rights to tell them to knock it off, although if they complied when asked I would say suspending or banning the frat from the university would be an over-reaction.
There’s this thingy called Amendment One.
Why are they offensive? Maybe they were serving high tea in the parlor. What woman wouldn’t have a good time at a tea party? If someone thinks the signs are offensive, it is because they have a dirty mind.
Which is not in any way threatened or relevant here, I would say. The right to freedom of speech doesn’t extend to every form of speech in every venue. It’s not like they’ve been arrested or brought before a human rights tribunal - the chapter has been suspended by the fraternity’s national organization, presumably because it puts the frat in a bad light. They may also have signed agreements with the university restricting their behaviour.
First amendment disallows government suppression of free speech. This ain’t government.
Dirty or not, they were
... wait for it ...
three sheets to the wind.
Unwad your PC panties please. The university said this was sexual harassment, a core PC value. F’em if they can’t take a joke.
Conservatives don’t support crude behavior Liberals do.
Maybe things have changed and no doubt they are different at different colleges/universities.
Back in the day, mid-70s, middle of the night, bunch of Sigma Nu busted down the apartment door of my girlfriend (wife now) and her three roommates, ransacked the place and then discovered they were at the wrong apartment and on the way out, said “That's okay, we're Sigma Nu”. . .and wandered off into the night.
Sigma Nu refused to repair the door and the girls had to go to the Greek Council (I think that was what is was called back then) to force Sigma Nu to pay for damages.
Sigma Nu was, of all frats, the foulest and most out of control of them all. . .and not in a funny Animal House kind of way. Every Friday night they would basically take over a local bar and start fights with non-Sigma Nu students and chase them away. Not a weekend went by without the police arresting several Sigma Nu for assault.
So, maybe they were a different breed where you were, but at Southwest Texas State University in the mid-70s, they were a criminal enterprise. Cheers
Yeah. It's crass, it's tacky, it's vulgar...and it's funny as hell.
Just as hundreds of mos were being offended, I'd wager hundreds of dads were thinking to themselves "Damn, wish we'd thought of that in Gamma Gamma back at ol' Siwash!"
Where's your sense of humor...???
...1st, full disclosure...
...many decades ago, I was a Sigma Nu...
...I now have 2 college age daughters...
...If I had seen this when I dropped them off at college, I would have giggled and said, "see, this is why you stay away from Frats"...
...there are college campuses all over THIS country where students are flying ISIS flags and no one gives a rats arse...
...two out of three brainless college students walk around wearing Che'Guevara shirts...
...in conclusion...
...lighten up Francis...
I guess Im hopelessly old fashion. There used to be a concept of being a gentleman which has been lost. I think our country and the world is poorer because of it.
