Ted Cruz Rebuffs Actress Ellen Page on Charges of LGBT ‘Discrimination’ at Iowa State Fair

Alternative headline: “Actress from That One Movie about Roller Derby Confronts Princeton Debate Champ — Goes about as You Might Expect.”

In preparation for his religious liberty rally in Des Moines this evening, Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz spent a few minutes today debating the subject with a not-too-friendly interlocutor: Juno star Ellen Page, now traversing the country for her Vice documentary program, “Gaycation.” Page accused Cruz of supporting “discrimination” against LGBT citizens. Cruz parried that the debate that has ensnared florists and photographers and pizzerias of late is not about discrimination, but about religious liberty: “We are a country that respects pluralism and diversity,” said Cruz, “and there is this liberal intolerance that says that anyone that dares follow a Biblical teaching of marriage, that is the union of one man and one woman must be persecuted, must be fined and must be driven out of business.”

Not surprisingly, Page was unsympathetic.

Politico has a transcript of the debate, of which, suffice it to say, Cruz got the upper hand. But it is worth noting one particular moment that seems indicative of the intellectual firepower one should expect from celebrity “gotcha” attempts like the above. Cruz offered Page the following hypothetical scenario:

Cruz: Imagine, hypothetically, you had a gay florist, and imagine two evangelical Christians wanted to get married, and the gay florist decided, ‘You know what, I disagree with your faith, I don’t want to provide flowers.’”

Page: I would say they should provide the flowers.

Applaud Page for her consistency, I guess. But what that consistency betrays is her rejection of conscience protections altogether, and her endorsement of radical government intervention in all such matters. If a LGBT couple wanted those pork chops Senator Cruz was grilling for their wedding ceremony, does the kosher caterer down the street have to serve them? By Miss Page’s thinking, apparently so.

For someone so passionate about expanding “freedom,” she is suggesting a fairly tyrannical way to go about achieving it.

"I’m guessing she was there to harass conservatives."

I wouldn't rule out publicity seeking either. Publicly harassing conservatives wins points in her industry.

Can you imagine any of the other candidates, even including Trump who would have simply called Page an idiot, answering and completely refuting Page's garbage as Cruz did?

Nobody in Hollywood, in the DNC, or in homosexual activist groups are even talking about how homosexuals are treated by Muslims. This completely exposes the homosexual agenda for what it really is: The destruction of Christianity and traditional moral values in the U.S.

This is the beautiful thing about Cruz, that he just utterly dissects the leftist narrative process and exposes it naked for low-information types to see, and then they come to the realization what it really is.

He should have asked her should a Muslim bakery be required to provide a cake decorated to celebrate sodomy. Then she would be the one in the “gotcha” position, especially considering the propensity of muzzies to separate the heads from the bodies of infidels.

THE AMERICAN THINKER OBSERVES:

http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2015/08/ted_cruz_shows_presidential_qualities_while_grilling_pork_and_lesbian_activist.html

Ellen Page claimed that a florist who refused to serve a homosexual wedding was bigoted, but Cruz turned her attention to the Middle East, and asked her why liberals were “completely silent” about the execution of gays, and why Obama is turning over 100 billion dollars to Iran when they are hanging homosexuals. When Page claimed that Christians in Jamaica were discriminating against homosexuals, Cruz turned to her and essentially said, “Are you really equating a florist refusing to work a gay wedding with the execution of homosexuals by ISIS?” He added that it was not morally equivalent, and that “murder is murder is murder.”

When Cruz was later asked about his conversation about “discrimination,” Cruz corrected the questioner, saying the conversation was about religious liberty. He said that just as a Muslim imam could not be forced to marry a Christian couple in a Christian ceremony, Christian florists or bakers should not be required to participate in homosexual weddings that are against their religious beliefs.

This was a stunning performance, even more so considering that it was a surprise attack. Cruz was calm and cool and collected. He quickly turned the attack back on the attacker, making her look like a hypocrite for not caring about homosexuals executed in the Middle East. He turned a discussion about “discrimination” into one of religious liberty.

This is the kind of candidate we need: someone who is not just a conservative, but an articulate conservative, who can turn the tables on attackers and challenge assumptions of questions.

The great think about Cruz is he is not dismissive, unlike Trump, he does not disparage the other person with demeaning words like “stupid”. He delves into the argument head-on with logic and shows how really “stupid” the other person’s argument is.

honestly, if i were a Christian baker and some homosexuals came to my shop demanding that i bake them an LGBTGDFDWQTCJIFDS Pride cake (or somesuch nonsense), i’d just politely decline and hand them the business card of another non-Christian baker who would be happy to oblige.

i don’t see how anyone could sue me in that situation. by handing them that business card, you show that they are not in any way of being deprived of getting the product that the desire, and if they did try to sue, it would expose the “gotcha” tactics that they are using to destroy people who disagree with them. the whole legal argument that they are using then goes out the window.

Even better - suppose you engage a muslim caterer or banquet hall and insist on having liquor. Or those muslim cab drivers in Minnesota who were refusing to transport passengers carrying alcohol.

Sweet cakes did refer the "couple" to another baker, and even offered other items from their bakery, but that wasn't good enough, probably because they went "shopping" for a Christian-owned business in the first place.

It's not about the cakes or equality. It's about marginalizing and silencing Christians who hold to the Bible's teachings. Criminalizing Christianity is just around the corner....

Then they would call you (on social media) the moral equivalent of the guy who killed Cecil de Lion.

“demeaning words like “stupid”

I don’t think it is demeaning if the people asking the questions or the questions are actually stupid. There actually is a lot of stupid out there that is not worth seriously responding to.

yes, i understand. but from a logical and legal standpoint, their argument falls apart the minute you show them that they are not in any way being deprived of a product or service. or at least it should fall apart in a sane world.

this is why Goldwater was opposed to the 1964 Civil Rights Act. he was correct. no matter how noble the goal, the reasoning behind it was flawed. our inalienable “right to free association” should put the kibosh on all of these frivolous civil rights claims and our feddle gummint would be a bit smaller now too (without all of those alphabet agencies dedicated to ferreting out and prosecuting anyone who has the gall to try and apply “right to free association” in their business and/or personal lives). the 1964 Civil Rights Act has been the foundation for lots of unconstitutional behavior by the government in the past 50 years.

BTW, there are eery similarities to Godwater’s 1964 campaign and Trumps 2016 campaign if anyone wants to go looking for them. Goldwater is more principled and erudite in my opinion than Trump, but both spoke to a segment of the population that felt isolated and alienated from the political class in Washington DC. might be a good article for somebody to write for one of those online political publications...

this is why conservatives always have such trouble arguing with liberals. we tend to argue rationally and logically, while liberals tend to argue emotionally. when you make your case using facts and logic and the other person refuses to acknowledge that facts and logic even matter, then how do you find common ground about anything?

whoever this unknown “actress” is, she is total trash, not very bright, single track mind and disgusting. Watching her run her mouth was a bore. Cruz showed much more patience than I could ever have mustered with such a vapid bimbo.

Who on Earth is Ellen Page...

Apparently, Ellen Page is a Canadian living in the United States, making a living as an actress, attempting to influence United States politics for the sake of a/her media project. (?)

That question was a quote from post#1, line 1.

As one who mocks the whores of Hollywierd, I do know, and still don’t care who she is. I do not purchase their childish drivel.

ooh, sorry about that.

It was a busy lead in with the pictures and your bold quote seemed like the logical place to start (i.e. thought you were the original poster).

(I’ll even add that the forest fire smoke is very heavy here)
