Alternative headline: Actress from That One Movie about Roller Derby Confronts Princeton Debate Champ Goes about as You Might Expect.
In preparation for his religious liberty rally in Des Moines this evening, Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz spent a few minutes today debating the subject with a not-too-friendly interlocutor: Juno star Ellen Page, now traversing the country for her Vice documentary program, Gaycation. Page accused Cruz of supporting discrimination against LGBT citizens. Cruz parried that the debate that has ensnared florists and photographers and pizzerias of late is not about discrimination, but about religious liberty: We are a country that respects pluralism and diversity, said Cruz, and there is this liberal intolerance that says that anyone that dares follow a Biblical teaching of marriage, that is the union of one man and one woman must be persecuted, must be fined and must be driven out of business.
Not surprisingly, Page was unsympathetic.
Politico has a transcript of the debate, of which, suffice it to say, Cruz got the upper hand. But it is worth noting one particular moment that seems indicative of the intellectual firepower one should expect from celebrity gotcha attempts like the above. Cruz offered Page the following hypothetical scenario:
Cruz: Imagine, hypothetically, you had a gay florist, and imagine two evangelical Christians wanted to get married, and the gay florist decided, You know what, I disagree with your faith, I dont want to provide flowers.
Page: I would say they should provide the flowers.
Applaud Page for her consistency, I guess. But what that consistency betrays is her rejection of conscience protections altogether, and her endorsement of radical government intervention in all such matters. If a LGBT couple wanted those pork chops Senator Cruz was grilling for their wedding ceremony, does the kosher caterer down the street have to serve them? By Miss Pages thinking, apparently so.
For someone so passionate about expanding freedom, she is suggesting a fairly tyrannical way to go about achieving it.
From Wikipedia:
Ellen Page, is a Canadian actress.
She started her career in Canada with roles in the television shows including Pit Pony, Trailer Park Boys, and ReGenesis.
Page then ventured into mainstream films, winning attention after starring in the 2005 drama Hard Candy a role that won her the Austin Film Critics Association Award for Best Actress, before her breakthrough role in Jason Reitman's comedy film Juno (2007) for which she received nominations for Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actress, and won numerous other accolades including the Independent Spirit Award, MTV Movie Award and Teen Choice Award for Best Actress Comedy .

Oh, just more Hollywood filth.
wow, what courage. Sarcasm.
A Hollywood idiot announces she is “lesbian”. That same Hollywood idiot decides to take on Cruz about homosexual issues.
She earned the equivalent of “street cred” with her actions. Liberals will say how courageous she was and all that.
Off topic, but how much courage does it take to come out as gay and espouse liberal positions in Hollywood????
She’s lying. It is easy to lie with a hypothetical. Love Cruz, but it was a dumb hypothetical. He should have compared it to a homo having to make a banner for a traditional family event. Or something like that. It has to compare with something they detest.
Anyway, where is her tolerance?
I think the thing that irritated liberals the most is the fact that Cruz didn’t even know who she was.
The crush of computer geeks and gaming nerds everywhere until she broke all their hearts by coming out as a lesbian.
The thing that confused me the most was, what's Ellen Page doing in Iowa?
One more thing, the left always puts the right on the defense about “discrimination.” We need to stop falling into that trap. It is not discrimination if you apply the rule to everyone. Homosexuality is wrong for everyone. There is no discrimination about it.
An interesting hypothetical would have been:
Imagine, hypothetically, you had a muslim caterer, and imagine a customer wants to order bacon-wrapped hot dogs for an event. Since the caterer is open to the public, must he accept the order?
Savage used to have a segment, with a big, echoed hype-announcer voice-over:
“And now, it’s time for, the HOLLYWOOD IDIOT OF THE DAY!”
I agree. Cruz need to ask a more difficult hypothetical. That example was easy for Liberals to lie on. ISIS are killing gay in Middle East and she think gay are so poorly treated in the United States because someone refused to bake a cake for them
Actors are professionals at convincing portrayal and delivery. Even OJ, who was not a very good actor on screen, did a good job displaying his hands when the gloves didn’t fit.
The problem is that actors portray roles. Since the Left has been kicking ass in the propaganda war (let’s admit it), the roles many actors pick on their own—not the ones they are paid for—are picked on the level of emotional groupthink. It’s been a long time since Hollywood was full of WWII heroes (Jimmy Stuart, Robert Mitchum, etc.), and did Communist blacklisting. Sure, they overdid it, but their hearts were in the right place. Now, the blacklisting goes the other way. If you are traditional — love the country, are heterosexual, economically conservative — you’re a minority weirdo, and it may affect your career.
I’m guessing she was there to harass conservatives.
If she’s the best commando they have, Ted Cruz has nothing to worry about.
Well, she is a cute little slut.
Or her career is stalled and she’s looking for some free publicity.
RE: The crush of computer geeks and gaming nerds everywhere until she broke all their hearts by coming out as a lesbian.
I would tell the geeks and the gamers not to be disheartened. There is always the possibility that under the right conditions, situation, circumstances, Ms. Page will go back to what she was designed to be.
Ann Heche ( Ellen Degeneres’ ex-girlfriend ) and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio’s wife are just examples.
You miss the Senator's masterful job of putting her on the "horns of a dilemma."
If she says "yes," she's an authoritarian; if she says "no," she's a hypocrite.
I love the “No, no, don’t do that!” part most of all. When they don’t like the outcome of a discussion, then one is not allowed to have a discussion. Total hypocrites.
