Amid reports that hackers apparently had posted online the personal and financial information for up to 40 million members of the infidelities-R-us Web site Ashley Madison, some Americans responded Tuesday night with a shrug.
Just as many, however, responded with a smirk.
Call it schadenfreude. Or, to use the parlance of our high-tech, low sympathy times, a collective lulz. But many people took to Twitter to express their amusement at what seemed to them like poetic justice.
[Hackers claim to have leaked Ashley Madison data trove online]
Who knew paying money to cheat on your spouse had consequences? #AshleyMadison, one person tweeted sarcastically.
Sometimes hackers can actually do a lot of good for society, wrote another.
All the Ashley Madison users who got their data put out in the open deserved it lol, added a third, alongside a smiley face.

Why are the leakers of the information “SJWs?”
This does not compute.
Gamergate hackers are using the info to go after SJWs.
“...security experts quickly noted that there were 15,000 .mil or .gov e-mail addresses among those used for the site.”
I’m sure many of those are fakes, but I’m also sure a lot of those used their work emails to avoid snooping into their private emails.
The .edu ones could be fun, too.
The hand-wringing about loss of privacy on the web by the author is just icing on the cake.
Even better.
This does not compute.
The 'leakers' aren't the SJWs, some of the leaked data are possibly SJWs by the '.edu' urls in the leaked portion of the database...

I can imagine a group of Muslim hackers doing this just as a way to tweak the West, stand up for “family values”, and potentially make money in the process.
If the intent is to “out” people to their spouses, providing financial data on the internet is a terrible idea. For spouses most of this sort of information is linked to them too. In essence it comes down to “your husband cheated on you, and now your identity is going to be stolen too.”
If this was done by Muslim hackers they probably found every member of the Saudi Royal Family in there.
is surely due to the number of WaPo editors' addresses to be found in the data dump.
When they came for the social justice warriors I said: “well done! Where can I sign up?!”
It’s not that I don’t care about SJWs; I do care, very much.
But whatever happens to them is deserved. It may happen in a way that should not be allowed. But that’s a separate issue.
Sounds like antisemitism on the part of the hackers.

I wonder how many got an email offering to remove their names...for a fee?
But, if the hack reveals more than just account info, like conversations or actual credit card info, then there might be something.
I’ve been following the GamerGate thing for a long time now, and am still puzzled why those involved are SO adamant, to wit why the SJWs are picking _gamers_ to beat up on so aggressively, and why gaming news media tolerates/supports it when obviously their vast majority of clientele don’t agree/care.
But that doesn't mean that I feel any sympathy for the “victims”, assuming that they actually did it, and I suspect that most of them did. Could be wrong.
Ashley Madison offered to delete any member's records at their request for a $19 charge, and then didn't. This was one of the beefs these hackers had with AM.
This would be inconceivably stupid. Work email, particularly .gov email is snooped a lot closer than private email. If you don't want your private email snooped, you set up another private email address.
Email verification was never required to sign up to Ashley Madison. An email address was requested to sign up but it didn't have to be a real one. You could sign up with a fake one, or someone else's email address if you wanted.
