In a 1992 study, Carson and his colleagues from Johns Hopkins used fetal tissue to better understand how the human brain develops. But in the wake of the Planned Parenthood videos, the presidential candidate has called fetal tissue research disturbing.
Ben Carson, a Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon and Republican presidential candidate, previously did research using human fetal tissue.
In the wake of the hidden-camera videos showing Planned Parenthood doctors discussing how to provide aborted fetuses to scientific researchers, Carson has told Fox News that the benefits of this research have been overpromised and under-delivered.
Late on Wednesday, an OB/GYN and science writer Jen Gunter revealed on her blog a 1992 study in which Carson and three other colleagues used tissue from the fetal brain and nasal cavity to better understand the development of the chambers (or ventricles) of the brain. These tissues were obtained from two fetuses aborted at the ninth and and 17th week of gestation, the paper says.
Last month on the Fox News program The Kelly File, Carson said:
At 17 weeks, youve got a nice little nose and little fingers and hands and the hearts beating. It can respond to environmental stimulus. How can you believe that thats just an irrelevant mass of cells? Thats what they want you to believe, when in fact it is a human being.
Aborted fetuses have been used for a wide variety of medical research for decades. The vast majority of scientists who depend on this tissue are refusing to talk about it, afraid of retribution from anti-abortion activists.
As a neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson knows full well that fetal tissue is essential for medical research, Gunter wrote in her post. His discipline would have a hard time being [where] it is today without that kind of work.
A representative from the Carson campaign said they are not commenting at this TIme.
Precisely. 23 years ago. He probably feels bad about that
A lot of people who have become solidly pro-life have done so because of their encounters with the reality of unborn baby harvesting firsthand. As this was 1992 and not 2012, it’s probably not going to stick as a charge of hypocrisy.
Did he, or didn’t he use fetal tissue from aborted babies?
It’s a shame your mother didn’t.
This article is doing exactly what buzzfeed wants it to do, distracting from the fact that PP is selling fetal body parts for profit. That is illegal on its face and that is what we should keep pounding them with.
Abortion is the emotional issue that, while horrific in its own right, moves the focus from this clear violation of law and turns it into a pro/anti abortion fight.
Selling body parts for profit is illegal no matter where you get the parts. People can donate their organs before or after death for transplant or research, but those donated organs cannot be sold for profit, and certainly not without the consent of the donor.
From what I have read, it is legal for aborted fetuses to be donated for scientific research, and legal for those providing the tissue to be reimbursed for costs of storage and transportation. It may be debated whether this is a good policy, but that would be another distraction from PP’s illegal activities, as it is disgustingly clear that PP was not simply discussing reimbursement for costs of providing tissue, but blatantly selling parts for the best price they could get.
Abortion is a plague on our nation and must be stopped, but these actions of PP are illegal regardless of where they got the tissue, and allowing PP and its supporters to try to make this an abortion issue will only distract from what can destroy them. Trafficking in fetal tissue is illegal. Period.
Love, O2
See the ttttaaaaaaaggggggglllllliiiiiinnnnnnneeeeeee.....
Yes. Carson as said he was a flaming liberal, as just about all people in academia are.
Uh, no.
> “To willfully ignore evidence that you have for some ideological reason is wrong. If you’re killing babies and taking the tissue, that’s a very different thing than taking a dead specimen and keeping a record of it.”

the medical term used for a miscarriage is “spontaneous abortion” so i’ll wait to hear what Dr Carson has to say rather than a bunch of paid democrat hacks.
My take: the story is already dead.
Unfortunately, that abstract says nothing about the source of the adult or fetal tissues, and there is no link to the full article.
In the scientific world, “abort” means only the expulsion of the fetus from the mother’s body, without any indication as to how or why. It can be a perfectly natural pregnancy loss. If the research article says something about “medically” or “therapeutically” aborted, then the babies in that study were murdered. Otherwise, they most likely died naturally.
They’re nuts, but Carson’s no conservative. He’ll have a tough time winning VP slot.
Carson should have been up-front about his past and how his feelings about abortion have changed, if this is true. If he sees a need for this tissue in research, he should've been up front about it.As well they should - we need people who walk the walk.
FWIW, votes have had it with hypocrisy.
Depends on whether it was induced vs. spontaneous (e.g. stillborn or similar).
He said on O’Reilly today it was a lie. He said his job was to operate on children, not do research. He’ll explain it more on other talk shows. He has always been pro-life.
Aborted baby’s vs Bankruptcy ...apples and oranges
However Trump is weak on abortion...I have been excited about him until I hear him say stuff like...”I will talk to the Republican party about changing its platform to include all the exceptions”
And his recent comments that He thinks... “planned parenthood has done a lot of good things, the abortion part is a very small amount”
Cruz is really the way to go, a true Conservative with no down size, but I would happily take Trump if he would make pledges in all these life issues and the Judges he would appoint to the Supreme Court
I have never said a unkind word about Carson for the record...and you are 100 % correct
