Bernie Sanders is unveiling a free college tuition bill. Will it work?

Presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders (D) of Vermont is planning to unveil a bill that, if passed, will make tuition at four-year public colleges and universities free.

In addition to eliminating college tuition at public colleges, Mr. Sanders' bill would expand work-study programs, and seeks to lower student debt and student loan rates – a system modeled after those of European countries such as Germany, Sweden, and Denmark.

Earlier this year, Sanders called for free tuition for college freshman and sophomores, and recently other liberal politicians have also taken up the cause of making college more affordable for American students as well.

"We live in a highly competitive global economy and, if our economy is to be strong, we need the best-educated workforce in the world,” Sanders said in a statement released Sunday. “That will not happen if, every year, hundreds of thousands of bright young people cannot afford to go to college, and if millions more leave school deeply in debt.”

To fulfill this goal, Sanders had called on state governments to invest $18 billion public higher education each year in order to meet his original goal of free tuition for college freshman and sophomores. Sanders has also frequently emphasized the need to invest in students and end the Department of Education’s practice of profiting off student loan debt.

College degrees are basically useless. You need a 4 year degree for what a highschool diploma used to be good for years ago. Making it free will only devalue that piece of crap even more, especially considering how dumbed down the curriculum is getting.

It will greatly speed up the decline of private educational institutions, speed up the Federalization of Education, turn the Dept. of Education into a super-power bureaucracy.

But the leftists teaching at private colleges won’t realize it

Harvard, Yale, etc... will survive, of course, but otherwise the once denominational, but now secular/progressive small private schools will be crushed by free government money to public schools, as well as the micro-management from Uncle Sam.

RE: Bernie - if college is free, who is going to pay the professor salaries? The costs of maintaining the buildings? Stock the labs and libraries? Buy classroom supplies?

How is that going to be FREE?

Pretty soon everything will be free, but who’ll pay for it all?

Remember the admonition that "you only get what you pay for"?

So what will a free college education be worth?

Absolutely nothin'

Aw. come on. Free? Don't you mean: Increased taxes on productive people to help those who aren't productive? If students want to invest in themselves and reap the rewards from that investment, that's fine, but don't ask US taxpayers to pay for it. Often what this really means is one semester of binge drinking at the expense of the US taxpayers. Drop the word "free", Bernie, and quit lying to people. If you want this badly enough, at least have the balls to pass a new tax to pay for it.

Conservatives just don’t get it.

They think “electing the right people” will matter. It won’t. With a Federal Reserve system able to back-stop Federal Government with printed money, debt, and centrally-controlled interest rates, there is no end to funding of progressive social-engineering schemes.

This has been going on since the New Deal, so we now have 3 generations of Americans who expect government to pay for everything from their health-care to education to abortions.

Tell me - how is a conservative ever going to be elected, much less survive, in such a political atmosphere?

But not a job that they couldn’t have done without removing themselves from the economy for four years, tying up all sorts of resources, and racking up big tuition bills (for someone, whether themselves or the taxpayers).

If only the Government quit making this useless money! If everything was FREE FREE FREE we wouldn't have to print the useless garbage. And think of all the trees it would save.

Define "Will it work?"
To make youths, commies and other easily led people with no economic sense vote for him, sure.
Will it be economically feasible and provide quality education for the masses - no way.

Won’t happen in my lifetime anyhow. I think that poster is right. With Fed printing presses, and no other viable candidate for a global currency on the horizon, I think they can keep this going for decades before the wheels finally come off.

... will make tuition at four-year public colleges and universities free.
There's that 4 letter word again that Dems love - FREE.
BTW, has anyone looked at the endowment funds these colleges have already? Many are are well over $10 billion.
Why don't THEY provide free tuition.
