Industry blasts suggestion as harmful to the country.
A conservation group that has succeeded in dealing recent legal setbacks to western Colorado coal mines called Thursday for a phase-out of federal coal leasing to help combat climate change.
Its time for the Interior Department to shut it down, Jeremy Nichols, Climate and Energy Program director for WildEarth Guardians, said in a news release.
The group outlined a plan for ending the federal coal program over 10 to 25 years through a moratorium on leasing publicly owned coal, retiring existing leases that arent producing, honestly reporting the climate impacts of the federal coal program, seeking funds to recover the costs of carbon emissions from burning federal coal, and helping coal-dependent communities transition away from coal, partly by using carbon-offset funds.
Stuart Sanderson, president of the Colorado Mining Association, said Nicholss statements reveal the groups true intentions.
This is what we have known about and been telling (people) about WildEarth Guardians the entire time, that this is a group thats not bent on improving the environment. It is bent on simply destroying the coal industry, ending coal use, he said.
He said coal is the nations and Colorados most reliable, abundant and affordable source of electricity. Removing it from the mix threatens energy security and would deprive the federal and state government and public schools of an important source of revenues, Sanderson said.
Last year, U.S. District Court Judge R. Brooke Jackson canceled an Arch Coal federal lease involving a roadless area, and more broadly vacated the whole North Fork Valley coal exemption to the Colorado roadless rule, after finding the federal government failed to consider climate change impacts from the coal that would be mined and burned. WildEarth Guardians was a plaintiff in that case.

It is bent on simply destroying the coal industry”
In other words they are self admitted Terrorists
Idiots on parade. Most of these wimps would cry like babies if they had to give up their microwaves, TVs, computers and air conditioning for lack of power.
This herd of socialist idiots is not a “Conservation Group”.
They are a mob of socialists, hell-bent on destroying capitalism and this Representative Republic.
They should see how filthy the places that build solar panels are.
Or electricity for their Starbuck$ Crapachinos.
These progressive Marxists think that they want to turn us into a third world mess: like Venezuela or Zimbabwe.
Or electricity to recharge their iphones.
They meant Planned Parenthood. DEFUND AND ABOLISH PLANNED FREAKING PARENTHOOD.
Its redundant......
Environmental Wackos describes them.
Should see all the closed up towns in Colorado do to groups like this.
The only good hippie is a quiet hippie.
Right now would be the best time to shut down the coal powered power plants. Record temps all over the areas, heat warnings out.
What’s a little extra CO2 compared to heat strokes.
Do WildEarthies live without AC and ice cubes?
If not, why not?
acids (HCL, HF, Nitric, Chromic, etc.) used in etch and clean operations, photo-resists (ugh), nuetralizing spent acids with NAOH, resultant salts down the old waste water stream to city sanitation, spent cutting oils for wafering, the list goes on and on.
When you tell the enviro-libs about this and other stuff that goes into solar cell manufacturing, their eyes glaze and cranial capacity apparently increases to the point that the cranium cracks the skull and it oozes out.
I guess veagans have never tasted good old charcoal grilled steak
The notion that coal is harmful is one of the most effective lies ever told.
they also cannot comprehend that hydrocarbons are from decomposed organic matter and are compounds of such matter. Supposedly organic and oil should never be used together in a sentence. Allegedly hydrocarbons and anything made from hydrocarbons does not degrade although microbes consume oil on the bottom of the ocean and I need to buy new tarps every year and the dashboard on my truck is falling apart.
