I sure am glad there's no inflation, because these "stable prices" the Federal Reserve keeps jaw-jacking about are putting us in a world of hurt. Those of us outside the inner circles of power are glad there's no inflation, because we'd rather get more for our money (deflation) rather than less for our money (inflation). You know what I mean: the package that once held 16 ounces now only holds 13 ounces. A medication that once cost $79 now costs $79,000. (This is a much slighter exaggeration than you might imagine.) Despite all these widely known examples of rampant inflation, every month we're told there's no inflation. Just to reassure myself there's no inflation, I looked up a few charts on the St. Louis Fed's FRED database. I have to say, I'm scratching my head here because the cost of things has gone up a lot since 2000. The consumer price index is up 38% from 2000.....

In before HG blogger whine
NO SS COLA increase next year.
Through the 90s there was actually mild deflation. The increase in the money supply did not keep up with the increase in productivity. The effect was a lack of major strikes and a general feeling that things were getting better and better. My income didn’t go up in dollars but the dollars I received bought just a little more as time passed. After scrabbling through the 70s and 80s the 90s were comfortable.
...yes, and have you noticed that a roll of toilet paper doesn’t last half as long as it used to?
..might that just because you have developed galloping dysentery?
If you buy washers or dryers there is no inflation.
The Fed does not count Food or Fuel or property values.
WTF?
I mean why even count anything if your not going to count food or fuel? OH, I know, you might vote against the incumbents, I get it.
Bass Turds, everyone of them.
I dont deny the gap is increasing, but I have always thought its a symptom of a problem, more than a problem in itself. If we had a rich vibrant culture of enterprise, rather than one of increasing entitlement, the gap would either shrink or it wouldnt matter, because everyone would be better off.
I call that Obamasizing...there's hardly anything that hasn't been touched by this phenomena...
Whether you think prices are going up or not therefore depends on what things you buy. I personally would argue that there has indeed been significant inflation in the cost of most of the items that most people buy on a regular basis, so as far as most people are concerned, this zero inflation figure does not in any way reflect their actual shopping experience.
It hasnt affected his ego.
Cost of education is a monster in the closet. The number one reason, the continuing decline in tax-supported institutions of higher education. In my state, the funding for higher ed has been in decline since the mid-90s. I think this trend is probably across the entire country since the entitlement programs continue to expand at the expense of every other program. They never run out of money for the parasites.
Not only is there inflation but your labor is being stolen. How many hours per week does the average person work to buy vegetables? Maybe an hour to more than a day, depending on income. How many hours to grow your own vegetables? Maybe a half hour. Keep working, slave.
That's the truth!
BUMP for later.
Stopped by the store yesterday. Girlfriend wanted stuffed peppers for dinner. 3 bell peppers. $5.99!!!!!!!
I sure wished my peppers had turned out better. Just planted fall tomatoes. Had a pretty good early crop. I don’t have much room for vegetables. May have to find room.
If you look at sizes of products.. a ‘half gallon’ of ice cream is 59 oz now...
Look at the per unit (ounces/etc) price...you can see the inflation...
